Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The same theory could be applied to all sports, player to player injury if a council own the land.

Has something occurred within the county to spark this?

Just came across the appeal of the OPW to the High Court in regards the hill walker case. A very distinct point was made in regards liability and standard of care. The court held it was not appropriate to impose absolute standard of care to the socially valuable activities. I wonder would this apply here should the course or another rider cause a crash or injury.

can you get a CX tyre 700 x 28 tubeless that fits a road bike (Giant TCR Advanced Disc Pro) - i'm hoping it might just have clearance enough for a 28 but I think a 30 would be too much. Presumably when its running very low pressure the clearances just isn't there. I've looked at the TCR and it would seem to suggest I can. Never done a CX race but there's one down home after Christmas on the trails around the beach so have to have a go. actually, anyone with experience of the Youghal CX race last year might be able to share their thoughts on what tyres (and bike) to run.

    Hi Taxuser1,

Luckily for you, in my opinion, the Youghal race is the one race in the Munster CX league where you might get away with relatively narrow thread - I'm assuming a similar course to last year of course on which I was using Schwalbes 700x30! The grass around the dunes is fairly compacted, but you might find yourself having to choose foot wear over tyre wear in the bumps and humps as well as the beach section. The OldVelos write up from the event doesn't focus on the course but the pictures give you an image. http://www.oldvelos.com/ode-to-a-mighty-gael/

If you're doing the B race you could equally opt for a mountain bike, and believe it or not, a hybrid with good tyres might see you unstuck.

    Hope fully meet you there,

    Brendan

Lawd the drama at Namur today was simply incredible.

Yeah both cracking races. Horrible conditions, in one of the crashes a puddle swallowed a front wheel up to the disc rotor.

Our annual Adventure X spin is on the 28th this year. Detail on the Facebook page, cheers!

Suitable for MTB/Cross and those funny Gravel type thingies!!!

Okay!...so got to ride the majority of our Adventure X course today......it's tough!!!. But for every tough bit there's a recovery bit and it's making for a grueling but enjoyable day out. A MTB would be ideal but CX bikes would easily make up the difference on the road sectors. Roll out is 10am.

Presume you must use 33m tyres or under for a B cyclocross race or can you roll up with wider ?

What is the difference between the A and B races?.....I am assuming B is for beginners etc, but is the a criteria then to move to A? A points system like the road races with A1, A2 etc

Open to correction, technically B races are show/intro races, ie beginners/people with no regular CX bikes(eg MTB bikes can enter) or those of us not good enough for the As, if your in any of those then your in Bs unless the organisers deem you to good. There are no hard and fast rules, much like a club league, if your too good, they force you up, there is no CI rankings or points so, as has happened, if no one was paying attention you could be A in one part of the country and get away with riding with the Bs in another part, although it is frowned upon and you'll be upgraded as soon as it is copped.

Just applying for my Cycling Ireland membership so I can do some track racing. I am interested in maybe dining some CX races too. Im 33, do I apply for M30 on my license or leave it as senior? Im confused by that bit

I would have left it as Senior but not sure it makes a huge difference for the average racer unless you plan to enter national competitions.

i propose a new thread title for 20/21 season - 'I'm bringin CXy back'

edit - it's mad to think that it's july, and we are already talking about cross....

With the distinct lack of road racing this season so far I suspect it could be a very CXy year

The way things are going and the rollback into Covid restrictions, I can't see a Southern CX league starting up anytime soon..

Maybe up in Ulster, but they may decide to do the same in the next month or two..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 252 ✭✭crosswords

From what I know the Munster Series, and the Ulster series are going ahead.

The dates are available on the Munster CX facebook site, and on Ulstercyclocross.com

As Tenzor said this could all change.

It is proving challenging to get councils to give permission for events, and the limit of 200 persons is also a problem for organisers to consider.

The national champs are on the calendar for January in Armagh, which will be an excellent venue.

Its usually a muddy slippery affair (in a good way).

With all this rain, the courses should be generally softer this year.

I dont think this will be a vintage year for cross, and lets hope we get to race as much as possible.

What do folk think about starting a new 2020 2021 thread?

    Season just weeks away now.

Title as previously suggested by my learned friend = "Bringing CXy Back".

Other options might be Corona Cross, Cross Infection, or Cross Contamination!

Yea I hope they go ahead once things get better with the Covid response.

This is the time of year race organisers go about getting access to venues, getting indemnity cover, organising sponsors, prizes, formats etc... However with the high level of uncertainty many will keep those plans on firm hold...

Cripes, there's a huge jump in CX entry costs now with the prices of new cross bikes. A lot of the major manufacturers' entry level cross bikes are starting at prices in excess of 2 grand - Ridley, Trek, Focus, even Canyon. It's big beans!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,709 ✭✭✭Tombo2001

How hard is CX? What is the standard like at the lower end?

For comparison = I used to do a lot of Cross Country running races, and for example in the Dublin Novice the last place could take more than twice as long to run the course as the winner. So it caters for everyone.

I'd like to try this but I'd be concerned I'd be stuck at the back of the field.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,932 ✭✭✭fat bloke

In my experience no matter where you are, 2nd, 12th, or 62nd, you'll be consumed by a vicious battle with the fella in front and the lad behind and the bigger picture won't matter a damn!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,458 ✭✭✭lennymc

yeah - what fat bloke says. There will always be someone to race.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,709 ✭✭✭Tombo2001

I understand - but at some point someone is last......and I'm trying to figure out how far back that is, and if I am within that range or outside it.

Dont want to be the lad who is still on the course when everyone else has finished.

Anyways, I will take it from what you've said that there is a wide range.

You won't be on your own. If you are right at the back you'll get lapped towards the end of the race. Usually a good time to pull up and get out of the way.

Haven't done a CX race for a few years but when I did I would typically be well away from the pointy end in the B races. At that point you race whoever is near you and the 'fun' is in trying not to get lapped.

Does anyone know of any B&M shops in greater Dublin area that stock Challenge tyres? Got caught out in Chicanes on Saturday in Clonmel and don’t think conditions for this Sunday in Glencullen warrant Limus’ so looking at Baby Limus as compromise between both but delivery dates not looking good atm

About the Orwell race, went to pay but the options for me are A or B elites, are they being run at the same time or are the B elites the support race? Sorry for the stupid question

B elite would be the support race. Its classed Elite as its adults.
