Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hey guys, on the back of the previous thread asking about the local scene I will try to post a bit more from what I catch on facebook and around the Gym.

Although this is in Scotland there's two local boys in this 8 man winner take all tourney.

If it's streamed it'll be well worth a watch.

    What is Charlie Ward like?

I seen on another thread here a guy who rolled with him spoke very highly.

Has he any amateur fights online or has anyone got a link to his record?

2-0 from what i can see, both went the distance. Type his name followed by mma into google and you will see his record.

I'm pretty sure both went the distance because he wanted octagon experience.

Thats some discipline then!. Hard to think a no fight MMA Amatuer would have that mindset in the heat of the moment. I think most fighters instinct is to win, win well and win asap if possible.

I think Charlie Ward is 3-0 at ammy

Alex Masuku at The Fight Before Christmas,
Lee Balmer at Clan Wars 18
Przemek Chmiel at Evolution FC 2

He was in Episode 5 of our McGregor documentary series airing at the moment, screenshot below

He must have some balls on him to make his pro debut in a tournament with those names. He has looked good though from what I've seen. Would be fairly nice to walk out of the place at the end of the night with a 3-0 pro record and fourteen grand in his pocket.

The fact it's a tournanament id say he'll be set to destroy mode. He'll want 1st round finishes

when nobody will take a fight with you , you end up with only 3 fights, i think , bar picking up an injury along the way which is a massive factor in one night tournaments, he'll run over anyone they put in front of him

Anyone know the format?. Are these fights the standard 3x5 minute rounds?

  • Registered Users Posts: 435 ✭✭SevereMMA

Not sure but id guess 2x5mins with sudden victory if needed and then 3x5mins in final

Yeah it's not that difficult to do especially when they had cameras there?? Apparently they're making a DVD of it but I've no idea why?? It can't be to make money cause who the hell would buy it? They'd have made more charging a fiver to stream it live?

Theres good nights and bad nights always for a nation with so few representing us on the international stage.

But fair play to the 2 lads getting in there in the tournament setting. Hopefully see them both back soon.

    Thanks to John and Charlie

Not sure i like the sounds of beaten fighters being allowed to progress because of an injured victor. That potentially leaves things more open to back stage shenanigans. Good for the paying audience though to have continuity.

At least he went out to the winner, and went the furthest with him also. Thats the issue with unseeded tourney formats, second best fighter could be out in rd 1

Phillips would have been the favourite by a mile in this tournament too to be fair.

Just saw this linked by SevereMMA.

Great fight, Ward looked very solid in the grappling at least. Not so much in the boxing. Things got a bit mental in the end, fairly savage knockout.

Lookin at that shows you how tough Charlie is. He should be welterweight. But looking at Philips, he'd probably make lightweight on a good diet. The end kinda reminded me of Anderson v weidman. Inviting yourself to be knocked out never ends well
