    I do a lot of shrimping this time of year and was thinking about buying a centre pin reel and load it up with braid

    Anyone ever try it ? It's perfect for float fishing and just wondering is there some reason I never seen anyone do it ?

    Also looking for a recommendation on what size and model to go for ? I fish an 11ft diawa whisker has medium-heavy action

    I'd imagine you've never seen anyone do it because it's a bit "specialist". Fixed spool tends to offer a lot more flexability. In the past centre pins were also fairly expensive (I think you can pick one up for more reasonable money these days). I remember (TV fishing personality) John Wilson used to do a lot of it on his programme (Go Fishing) - I'd imagine it's more popular in the UK.

    browsing the net all morning and apart from some of the reels being expensive i cant see a reason why its not being done (that i know of )

    watching videos on youtube of catching king salmon on the centre pin it looks like great fun

    im looking at 2 reels

    The casting techniques - I recall at least 2 methods - are difficult and very specialist.

    Casting wouldn't bother me plenty practise and I'd master any cast

    Think I'll get one and get a few days in with it before season is up

    Well it took awile buy I finally went and got me a centre pin reel i have to say it looks great I loaded it with 15lb mono for the time being just to practise casting seems great

    Have some braid on the way so once that arrives I'll give it a test run on the river

    I've used them a little in the past, never with braid though.
    With mono you have to be careful not to load too much line as it can bed in under strain and will get stuck when you try to cast. This might become more pronounced with braid.

    I will be using it for salmon :) float fishing shrimp and worms

    I don't like using mono while float fishing as it sinks and when ya strike your not in contact with the float and I have lost a few fish over this

    Since I changed to braid I had no such issues

    Braid will give you more sensitivity certainly but many centre pins have bedding in problems if too much braid is loaded. Check if you should use backing in that reel and don't load it with more line than you will be likely to need. Some people use mono as backing to prevent slippage.

    Ya I always use mono as a backing even on my fixed spool reels for that exact reason

    Looking forward to giving it a try once the braid arrives

    Why didn't you go with a multiplier ? The free spool is the same friction less action as the center pin for drifitng down swims and the multipler is better for casting

    I have never seen someone using a multiplier while float fishing but its just something about the centre pin I always wanted to try out

    They look great and give the best control over the float

    I have used a multiplier shrimping, you set it to free spool and you have the same control a center pin will give you. Think I have seen another fella using one on the weir.

    A multiplier just doesn't have the same appeal to me as a centre pin does

    I have seen people using them and always wanted to give it a go and I think the look great and would definitely have the most control over a float

    When in free mode ya can spin the reel and it would keep spinning for 30 seconds plus i don't think a multiplier would do that

    Ive used these for years get a few strange looks from time to time, they turn to cast not sure where you can buy them at the moment I got mine years ago in Dublin http://alvey.com.au/

    I have the reel now just waiting on some braid for it , I won't get to use it this week I'll be concentrating on the fly but hopefully make a start next week
