The thread is a great idea, and actually limiting to 5 with no room for expansion is what makes it worthwhile, otherwise we'd all just be compiling lists of dozens of songs. Good call :)

Cheers I thought making it tight with 5 will make it hard to pick. I’m already having picker remorse. So many good ones missing on my list. Just goes to show how many Christmas bangers there really are.

The power of love by FGTH was most definitely a no.1 in the UK charts. At the time it equalled the record held by Gerry and the pacemakers of seeing the bands first 3 singles getting to no.1, in FGTH case it followed Relax and two tribes as UK.no.1s. Their 4th single, welcome to the pleasuredome ended their run by only getting to no.2. Interestingly FGTH never had another no.1 single with their long awaited second album struggling in comparison to their debut album welcome to the pleasuredome.

Had to have a good think about this, surprising how when you go through your favourites how hard it is to just pick 5.
    Anyway my top 5-

    5. Last Christmas - Wham. Possibly the greatest Christmas music video of all time?

    4. The Christmas Song - Nat King Cole. Simply beautiful, a voice as rich and warm as velvet.

    3. Merry Christmas Everybody - Slade. A Christmas classic, good fun and Noddies "ITS CHRISTMAS" at the start :)

    2. Happy Christmas, War is over - John Lennon. A great song by one of the greatest.

    1. Do they know its Christmas - Band Aid. From the bells at the start to the message this song means and the history behind it as well.

Some great suggestions in the thread so far.

Very hard to pick just 5..I'll go with these for the moment, I could change the order too!

    5. 2000 Miles - The Pretenders
    4. Same Old Lang Syne - Dan Fogelberg
    3. River - Joni Mitchell
    2. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - Judy Garland (the original and the best version :-))
    1. I believe in Father Christmas - Greg Lake - despite the cynicism of the lyrics, I always look forward to hearing this song.

It absolutely belongs in this thread IMO and in fact was in my top 5 & after the job I had of limiting my selection to 5 & having no 'honourable mentions' as Loughc had requested i'd be aghast if it deemed as unworthy :D So if you feel like changing your 5 to include it, rock on my friend!!:)

I was thinking it would be more in a "Top 5 Christmas music pieces" list.
Funny though, I also always associate it with Tom Dunne. It was another thing that marked the start of Christmas for me a decade ago. Absolutely loved hearing it every day
