Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Substitute teaching in primary schools in Ireland

    Hello,
    I am looking for some help/advice please.
    I am a student about to start my masters in Primary School Teaching.
    I have completed a level 8 degree and I am wondering is it possible for me to be a substitute teacher now without having a teaching qualification?
    I have heard from people that you only need a level 8 degree but I am not sure where I can find the correct information regarding substitute teachers and whether or not I could be one.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    I think you would need to apply to and be approved by the teaching council. You would also need garda vetting.

    However, even if you could, there are fully qualified probated teachers struggling to get subbing work.

    So, I don't think you can from a technical point of view, but from a practical point of view you'd not get work subbing.

    If you don't have a TC no. and garda clearance, not a chance.

    I am in the same situation as you now. Starting a masters in Primary School Teaching after completing a level 8 degree. Is it as simple as registering with the teaching council?

    I read this in the teaching guidance, what is meant by appropriate additional qualification?

    'If you are applying for registration on the basis of an undergraduate degree or equivalent at Level7 on the National Framework of Qualifications (which has a ECTS credit weighting of at least 180credits), you are required to provide evidence of an appropriate additional qualification, or a minimum of three years’ experience in a workplace or instructional setting which is relevant toyour qualifications'
