    That's shocking.

I'd love to know how some of these insurance companies work out their premiums.

Mine was €1500 last year. Due again in April.

    :(

The renewal for my wife's Leaf Insurance arrived yesterday (I'm a named driver) - €356 from Aviva. Not too bad but will still look around, including getting a fresh quote from Aviva

I got rid of my car because of was sick of the ****ing around with insurance companies. I found that I can get by using GoCar and it's actually a lot cheaper for me than owning a car. It's just a pity that they don't have EV's in my area, but it's only a matter of time.

    @DrPhilG @homer911

€1500 and €356 for the same car, that is some difference.

Actually quite simple. An insurance company spreads the risk by insuring a range of drivers. When a sub section of that quota fills up they add a loading to deter further exposure to that subsection.
    In essence, 'Computer says no'.

You just have to try another insurer whose quota hasn't filled up.

A man is rich in proportion to the number of things which he can afford to let alone.

I'm doing this very idea this month. 3k running costs just aren't worth the value for my own lifestyle. I have luas option for majority of my travel. Insurance quote this year sealed the deal..

Are you coping ok with go car? I wish they had more electric vehicles too.

I had a small claim a few years ago. Tied to the same company now until I'm 5 years claim free.

    System is a joke.

I think the more expensive one may have been as a result of a claim.*

Got mine for €280 in 2015, €318 in 2016 and over €400 in 2017. Have never made a claim in over 30 years of driving.

If you are with Aviva - challenge them over the phone - they always do better!

I did and can't remember how much they knocked off it but it remained over €400

It's going surprisingly well. I thought it would be an inconvenience but it's actually the opposite. I live in Limerick city centre and there's a GoCar parked on the next street which is always available. Most of the time I get around by walking or bike (sometimes public bikes and sometimes my own bike for slightly further distances). I use GoCar if I need to do a grocery shop or a trip somewhere for a few hours. There's a local car rental place that gives me a car for 17 euro per day if I need a car for more than a few hours, which is really only a few times a year.

The curious thing is that I've found myself to become a lot more organised and efficient with my time. The freedom that owning one's own car promises is actually a burden in many respects. Sometimes we're better off not having that freedom because we have a tendency to abuse it.

    Hi everyone,

This seems to be the most recent post on car insurance for an EV, so here is my question:

I have just bought a new Nissan Leaf and wanted to substitute my insurance from my Ford Focus. The AA are quoting me an additional premium of EUR 117.80 in addition to the EUR 620.89 I already paid on the Focus, that's about EUR 750 in total!

But if I cancel the premium they will charge me about EUR 200, so I would have EUR 420 left to play with.
Is it worth shopping around with other insurers to see if I can still make a saving, or should I just bite the bullet and go with the AA?

    All advice appreciated, thank you!

The additional insurance is probably because the value of the car has dramtically increased. What value was the Focus and what value is the Leaf now?

Once you are in the middle of a contract then they have you over a barrell....they wont give you discount on the addition.....that is not too much of a fee...try the likes of Blue Insurance and you get hit with 50 quid just for doing anything and then the amount.....

I would pay and then see what you can do at renewal time....

Agreed with stay with the current insurer. At the renewal time you can then amuse yourself getting quotations from various companies that will range between 380 and 800 euro for apparently exactly the same coverage. For me it so happened this year that the chepest quote had marginally the best extras like lowest excess.

You can try to bargain by geting rid of the roadside assistance as Nissan comes with one included for 3 years.

AXA may reconsider windscreen cover on i3s if I make another claim.

I got a crack from stone hitting the frit of the windscreen on the M7 one winter morning.
AXA didn't know what hit them...

They were going to use their standard repair guys until I pointed out that there is a special tool used to remove the i3 windscreen instead of the steel wire.... and that the steel wire could cause damage to the frame and make the car a write-off... which BMW Ireland backed me up on.

They had to bring a specialist with the correct tools and training from the UK to replace the windscreen :D
He had to come twice because BMW had to take the car after he'd replace the windscreen and recalibrate the cameras used for the auto-steering and adaptive cruise and they refused access to the workshop so we had to reschedule.

Fair play to you, you nailed them on it well. Make the fúckers squirm.

I know I read a few recommendations on here before but can't seem to find them now.

Any Irish insurance companies stand out as offering competitive deals on EVs?

As always with insurance, you can only get the best deal for yourself if you ring them all. Including all the main brokers. Forget about filling in online forms, they're never the most competitive. A few hours of dreaded hard work, but you will potentially save yourself hundreds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,024 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

To be fair, the renewal from Allianz was very good, but I tend to do a lot of online forms for a few days every year. I can't see anyone beating it, and if so, not by any huge amount.

I was just wondering if anyone had any experience of one or two companies which really seemed to stand out in terms of good deals for their EV.

Zurich have an EV specific policy but it's just marketing spiel really. They gave me a quote of 475 with no claims protection which wasn't bad but Liberty beat it by about 30 euro. Those were the two best quotes I got.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 39,798 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

    No real ‘better’ companies.
There’s only what’s best for you after ringing them all!

I was with Zurich last year on the Leaf and this year the renewal on the i3 was one of the highest quotes I got. It was the same as the leaf renewal on fairness but Zurich we’re doing nothing for me.

Rang around many and the cheapest was 123.ie until I got a quote from JLT through my wife so check your company to see if you have any affiliation with any companies.

    Or professional groups etc
    Engineers Ireland members scheme
    Public sector scheme
    Etc etc

I ended up with a better policy for €353 on the i3.

I have found JLT very good also.
e.g. when I bought the second, ice , car.
Broker quoted me 3,300, with no NCB on second car
JLT got me 1,200, with a notional NCB.

RE Zurich, just check the free roadside assistance clause, if any, on all policies

Well the renewal for the Leaf is €360, and thats the full protection, not a slimmed down policy.

I honestly think ringing around will be wasting my time, I can't see me getting any deal better than that.

My insurance last year was €800, coming off a 4 year old claim in my part and a lingering open claim for my wife due to the Setanta collapse.

Renewal is at the end of this month and the local broker who got me that price last year (my renewal at the time had been €1200) was offering €600 through Liberty.

I priced around and found €480 with Axa.

Dropped an email query with Quotedevil and they called me back the next day to offer me €450. Insurance is with Axa, but Quotedevil gave a further discount because I have my house insurance with them.

Given the high BHP out put of teslas, EQC, iPace and Etron, how have people been getting on insuring their EVs,

i know its a piece of string qn as there are so many factors, some that change day to day :pac:

but how have people found transferring insurance across from an ICE to EV?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 39,798 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

    Cheaper.
But as you say. It makes no difference what I pay as it has no bearing on you.
Only way as normal is to call around as we’ve always done.

    I’m paying €283 on an i3.
I was paying 600 on my 535 while work mates were paying 950 on 520’s.

I got a quote for a Model 3P from axa and it was €700.

I checked 123.ie recently and it quoted me 450 eur for a new LR Model 3, my wife as main driver, me as named. We're in our 50s with full no claims bonus. I should get licence plate details soon and will do more checking then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,232 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

    Cheaper

    I saved >250 vs an e60 535d

€400 for Ioniq, €150 - 200 cheaper than my Berlingo was (400 less to tax too). Mid 30s full no claims.

Ioniq isn't particularly powerful car though so I'd imagine Tesla etc would be a different ball game for me.

  • Registered Users Posts: 53 ✭✭C@t

Apart from the cost, what should one look out for when insuring an EV, that would be different from an ICE car?
E.g. check that charging cables are covered for damage/theft, does the policy breakdown cover apply for recovery if you run out of electricity..

Is there anything else that should be checked for if moving to an EV?

Ioniq about €340, about €40 more than her 11 yr old Prius. A little older than Mickeroo:)

I would imagine similar to any car. ie the few companies not great if you need a claim often mentioned on this forum. We are with Aviva.

Perhaps it would help folks if your insurance company was mentioned when quoting premiums, as it might help some folk narrow down the best companies to phone?

Some good quotes so far, could posters EDIT their posts to include company?

We are currently €348 for a Leaf, with renewal at 368. Thats with Allianz.

I haven’t lost money on a car since I sold my first car back in 2001.
Bought right, sold right, got lucky, wise decisions etc

    Give you a great example.
Went down to a dealer in Airside in 2010. Recession kicked in. I was going to look at a 120d they had.
Had 10k with me. Turns out the dealers some took the 120d as his own car blew a chain that day or something.

    They had a 2005 320d E90 in the corner for 13950.
Showed him my money and told him I was buying a car today. It was a Friday. Getting ready to close for the weekend. I walked out with that 320d for 10,600.

Sold it a year later for 13,500!
Being doing the same on every car. Not all as much profit though.
Bought an S3 for 5500 and sold it 8 months later for 6850. I’ll
Always remember that car. Great little yokes.
My 535 cost me 13600. Sold it 18 months later for 15k.
    525 cost me 10. Sold for 11.
530 E39 Aegean Blue limited edition cost me under 5k. Great car. Sold it a year later for 6600. That went to cork.
MG ZR bought on adverts for a run around
For under 1450 as it had just Failed NCT as the washer jets not working. Car had recently got the upgraded head gasket done and whoever done it rested one of the engine mounts on the water line :)
Fixed it for no cost. Drove it for 6 months and sold it for 2450.

A few other cars in between such as ML270 that balanced out over 2 years, Evo 5 that I sold for what it cost including mods etc

How the heck did you get that? I have 4 policies with them (2 cars included), tons of years NCB, no PPs and the feckers still would not quote me for less than circa €400 on each car. The last time I had €280 was between 2012 and 2016...

Its that time of the year again, EV insurance up.

I know that many will say you just have to ring around to get the best quote, as one company might be cheaper for you versus me, but just want a straw poll to see if any company stands out as offering decent deals for EV owners.

I'm currently with Allianz for my 141 Leaf.
Was €330 last year, looking for €350 to renew.

    So, who's insuring your EV?

@niman I've been with Axa via Quotedevil for the last few years. I actually use QuoteDevil for house insurance and car. Unlike most brokers I've dealt with, when the renewal comes around they're nearly always still competitive.

I just renewed last month. Last year I paid I think €465. Renewal from QD came out at €525.

I priced all the usual online places and they were more expensive. Called a local broker in Letterkenny and they got me down to €480.

Called QD, they first said they would match the €480, but also said they'd go direct to the insurer and see if they could get any additional discounts. Came back 2 minutes later with €400.

Offer accepted ASAP needless to say.

Aviva - €295 (Jan 2021) for fully comp (new EV) and a named driver. Full NCD, Bonus protection, etc.

I am getting an extra discount as I have multiple policies with them.

Hopefully, further chipset shortage notwithstanding, should be picking up an EV at some stage this year.

Just wondering if there are any EV owners up for renewal that might help when shopping around - if you have positive experiences or better quotes for EV ownership, etc.?

I'll be picking up a VW ID.3 Tour 5 (although it's already 5+ months waiting at this stage).
