Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

A short timelapse from the 4th August. I was in a dry clear section and all the action was a few kilometres away. Made for great video though. However, I had the aperature on the video camera set to manual so things get a little bit washed out so the detail is lost. Still quite good though. The explosive action happens just after the 0:30 mark

These are two videos I took on my phone last night in Phoenix Arizona. Nice constant lightening for a good few hours. I had a third video but it crapped out on me. There was some lightening that didn't even show up on the video as it was too faint and there were some flashes so bright it overwhelmed the camera sensor. Anyway hope ye enjoy!

I made a brief flight around Meath and Westmeath today as strong convection was beginning to build. Soon after I landed it formed a potent squall line through north Leinster.

    Watch in fullscreen HD.

    great video Su.!

SIlly question, but do you ever get even a bit scared flying when the weather is like that?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,279 ✭✭✭Su Campu

Yesterday was ok when I was flying as the showers were well scattered but soon after I landed that line of showers closed up and it would have been lethal flying through it to get back. The radar was quiet before taking off but I knew there would be heavy ones forming and was watching the situation carefully as I was up there and ensured my route back was clear. The thing that keeps you calm is knowing that you're erring on the side of caution and are always assessing the situation, having an escape route. If it were half an hour later I wouldn't have taken off as I knew I wouldn't have much time. And if it were a cross country trip to say Sligo I certainly would have postponed.

A bit wet in West Limerick this morning. Amount of water on the roads not really making sense given the dry few days we've had recently...

Is it just me or do others love that sound of the rain hitting near the mic? :)

You might hear the rain hitting the housing, will check it out soon :D

Didn't bother to edit, must make a steadicam mount too....

Edit:- most of what you hear is indeed the rain hitting the housing (GoPro), there are other noises in there too. If I was doing a more thought out piece, I would have recorded the ambient sound externally to the video and dubbed in on in edit. Having that said, I'm very happy with the GoPro, it's very versatile :)

Here's a 9000 image sequence shot on a gopro yesterday. Decided to get the gopro to save wear and tear on the DSLR.
Still a work in progress but really impressed with the little camera with a huge spec.

Watch in HD for best picture and the convection and shear is quite evident a minute or so in.

Well, Youtube takes approx 12 hours to load this vid, then Google Plus wants you to be a member and deletes your account when you refuse, so there I am looking for something, MySpace has shown itself to be the fastest up loader, now if it's not working or I've set something wrong? dunno.

Google Plus is a joke, Vimeo will cost a few shillings and Youtube is going pro channels only so, open to suggestions.

    And thanks.

Got addicted to time lapse this summer, 90x seems to work best for convection.

    Here's a neat cloud street: http://instagram.com/p/d2irN4scob/

Satellite showed the cloud streets stretching at least 100 km and staying pretty much in the same position for hours, so it was fun to see how dynamic they are when viewed from up close.

Here's an approaching convective cell: http://instagram.com/p/d2dYJgscvy/

    Cheers, Samu

I was working in the Swedish Solar Telescope for a couple of weeks as part of my final year project. I'm not sure whether you can stay in the accommodation up there without some sort of invitation, there were groups of students around some times though. Anyone can go up to the telescopes though and there's hiking trails which go along the rim of the caldera right by a lot of the telescopes.

Awesome timelapse Trogdor, really weird to see the clouds like a sea below. Must be an amazing place, according to Wikipedia thats 2360m high, air must be pretty thin up there.

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

My three minute timelapse of the approaching storm Enrich on Thursday morning from 11:14 to darkness at 16:34. Thursday 26th December 2013
During the storm my WS recorded its highest wind in two years with a gust of 76 km/h @ 02:10.
Whilst I have no time for this, my Magmount Stormchaser on the roof of a transit van in the front drive shows a maximum of 88.5 km/h.

    My lowest pressure was 968.2 hPa @ 02:10: Lowest temp: 3.1°C @ 21:37. Highest rain rate 3.6mm/h @ 10:43

Monitoring the storm up to about midnight it was a radio hobbyist’s Christmas present as the comms were over loaded and broke down meaning that local systems were reactivated and direct control was taken by the local fire stations. Central comms were really angry with Charlie Kilo progress reports and repeatedly told him to keep the line clear that they were very busy, simply relaying this in print does not get across the voice and panic from the dispatchers. It was great hearing new and unfamiliar callsigns.

Reports of numerous trees, I counted 12 before I lost track, three extractions or casualties already out of their vehicles, traffic lights blown over and other lights littering the roadways, and a quite concerning call to the CUH where reports of a roof cave in were inaccurate as it was the “new” cladding coming off, which is not a unique occurrence.

It's ice crystals in the atmosphere, not too dissimilar to the more common "rainbow" effect. These have been seen in North America and in Russia during the most recent cold weather events, though the Russian one is the most spectacular and a very fortunate capture.

I saw one myself many years ago heading for Kerry one winter's sunset, but I could not get a good view and was even a wee bit frightened by what I though were two suns in the sky [the other side was hidden to me].

Impressive shot of it. I could see those heavy showers to my east earlier. A huge black base and a sunny clearing to the west with lots of cu about.
