Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Has anybody come across a direct comparison review between the gti pp 7.5 and gti 8?

I understand the bigger channels aren’t likely to do something like this as they can’t recommend the old car but there might be someone out there that’s done a fair comparison.

Keep an eye on Volkswizard’s YouTube channel. I expect he’ll do exactly that in the coming days/weeks.

It does. Both cars have the same standard wheels. But the 19” upgrade is prohibitively expensive on the standard car due to VRT.

    Ah right, didn’t see that.

What kind of things are you looking for? Interior or performance?

The 19inch wheels increase the CO2 by 1 gram on both cars but for some reason the Clubsport has 2 CO2s less than the next VRT bracket where as the GTI has one. So if you spec them on the GTI it increases the VRT by 4/5 percent

They really need to put some sort of warning in the configurator about that.

Of course the GMFV on the Clubsport is higher than the standard car. From memory, it’s about €22.5k on the CS.

Here's a quote for clubsport - almost bang on Joe!

So you pay the price of a leggy Mk7 GTi as a deposit, nearly 500 a month for 3 years and you still owe €22k at the end.

No matter how you package it up its mental money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,574 ✭✭✭carsfan2

On the VW finance quote page I could only get a quote last night for a standard gti with dsg and it was about 437 a month if I recall. They don’t have the clubsport on it. But from the quote above there isn’t much in it with regard to the monthly payment.

To be fair that makes it look very bad. You’d still have as asset worth what, mid 30s?

    :pac:

I did make some enquires on it a couple of months ago but I didn't go beyond that. I wasn't looking at putting anything like 17k in as a deposit, but the monthlies were a little higher than the above example - around €520-530 I think with around 12k deposit.

With a GMFV of 22.5k, after 3 years you should have at least 9-10k equity, maybe even a bit more.

I saw an amusing comment on this one elsewhere during the week, something like:
If you could PCP the road tax, the country would be full of them.

To be fair every car is mad money these days. A 1.5 DSG Golf with wheels and a few moderate options is €36-37k, that's without a sunroof, leather or sound system. A similar spec A3 is €44-45k and these are fairly standard small hatchbacks. The price only goes up from there.

I'd sooner buy a €50k performance Golf than a big diesel executive saloon I don't need like a few people I know...

I think if going for a new dsg golf gti in Ireland, it’s a no brainer to stretch to the clubsport model though.

It would be nice alright, it might be just about out of my budget but it will be at least 6 months before I'm shopping around so we'll see what the man maths is like closer to the time.

Is the heated steering wheel standard? Or winter pack?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,223 ✭✭✭MarkN

    Standard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,574 ✭✭✭carsfan2

Pretty sure but Joea3 might correct me that heated steering wheel is an extra.

Those alloys are the best by a mile of the choice for the gti.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,223 ✭✭✭MarkN

Standard spec on the VW site when I checked earlier. Could be wrong!

    €974 extra for those wheels

I *think* the heated wheel might be standard but in order to get heated seats you need to spec the winter pack - or leather gives you it too.

Not too keen on that leather though and it’s big money as it also adds electric/memory function.

Plus the VRT implications Mark. Those wheels push that car up into the next band, so 5% more VRT on the entire car and €600 p/a tax.

Car does look excellent though, great photos!

Is the performance not the same? From the reviews I’ve seen some say the ride is a bit harsher on the 8. Have you reviewed it and the clubsport yet?

Edit: Just seen that you have one now!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,223 ✭✭✭MarkN

Clubsport in May, hoping to get an R in the next few weeks. It is firm but copes ok from the driving I’ve done on it via back roads to Malahide. A more sedate car compared to many other hot hatches in terms of how it doesn’t make a fuss, no pops and bangs, no dynamic mode, it just does everything including moving at a quick pace relatively under the radar. It’s still the one you’d want though overall, don’t care what anyone says!

Would love to see you get your hands on the 128ti Mark to compare them!

My brother bought a 240i last week (2018) less than price of a new GTI.. bit of an unfair comparison though !

They look interesting. In the uk I think they are slightly cheaper than a gti but here around the price of the clubsport.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,574 ✭✭✭carsfan2

Just checked and Heated steering wheel is part of winter pack according to the product guide not standard.

While very desirable car I just think they have gone too expensive in mark 8 version without offering a usp over a mark 7. As drunk monkey showed you can get a loaded mark 7.5 for substantially less.

Heated wheel is standard. Look again, it’s listed under the “Interior equipment” on the GTI page. It’s also listed under the winter pack too but that’s probably because in models lower down the range the heated wheel comes with the winter pack. The winter pack is actually more expensive on a base spec Golf than the GTI for this reason.

I don’t think the 7.5 is substantially cheaper either tbh. 42-45K for the few fresh examples on Carzone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,574 ✭✭✭carsfan2

I see it there now. Assumed when it was part of a pack wouldn’t be standard.
I knew you’d be right Joe!

I agree and disagree re mark 7/7.5 vs 8 price wise.
If you want the latest and a brand new car then mark 8 but if you were spending cash as opposed to pcp I don’t think you’re at all short changed with a one or two year old mark 7.5

The price of all new cars has gone mad in last couple of years I think. However I think residual values will probably harden due to short supply from fewer imports

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

Yeah, it’s all relative. Paying 40k for a car that’s worth 20k three years old versus Paying 55 for a car that’s worth 35.

The Edition 45 pack is to cost around £3k in the UK according to volkswizard but comes with the alloys, decals and an Akrapovic exhaust. What's it likely to cost here? €5k?

The exhaust alone here is over 4.5k. Wheels another 1k or so.
I’d guesstimate a 7k premium over the CS.

According to Auto Express the Edition 45 is based on the standard GTi rather than the Clubsport though. No mention of what bhp it will have though.

Is anyone actually thinking of pulling the trigger on something. I flicked through the start of part of this thread from end of 2014 start of 2015 when the mk7 performance variants were relatively new and seemed to be plenty of posters that had pulled the trigger then.

One of the posts from someone who had just ordered I think an R said his salesman confirmed that dealer had 7 Rs and 1 GTi orders in. The thread seemed to be hopping with people buying them and talking about specs, build weeks and delivery times. Just not getting the same vibe here about the mk8. Interestingly though that might make it a decent buy as was just mentioned, it will hold its value well. I'd imagine the next one will be a hybrid too, which may help.

Did one person on here confirm a new GTI order for themselves or is there more?

At which point, you'd be at the starting price of the R.

The car I posted is €60,000 - might have something to do with lack of orders. My MKV bog standard was €35,000 in 2005.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,574 ✭✭✭carsfan2

I paid a shade under 40k new for my gti pp at start of 2015. That included leather, keyless and whatever other option packs were cheap back then. I also got three free services. It actually was a great value package and lost very little money before I sold it. At 60k the current model doesn’t have the same appeal.
Edit- I actually veered towards a new Audi S3 after getting gti prices. you can get a decent enough spec S3 for 61/62k which I know is lot of money but while Audi have taken a step down in quality it feels better than the golf and has physical controls for air con and heated seats. Went with neither in the end.
