Very important win indeed. Was important to keep up with Laois and Carlow. Should win next 2 games and then face tough battles against Laois and Carlow.

    Under 21 Munster Football Championship.

Clare 15 points Limerick 2-11 After extra time.
Was 2-6 to 12 points at end of full time.

Clare led a number of times in this match but failed to close it out so disappointing result really.
    Goals win matches though :(

    NFL - Clare 5-10 London 0-4

A good result for the footballers, but an expected one. Too little too late with regards to any chance of Div 4 final.

NHL Preview - Clare v Down, Cusack Park 1.30pm

A game the lads should win, but may be closer than we'd like after Down led Limerick for 48 minutes last week.
    Sparrow seeks workrate improvement

Clare manager Ger O'Loughlin believes that the workrate of his players must improve ahead of the Munster championship.

The Banner laboured to a seven-point win over Westmeath in the league last weekend, although they did score an impressive 1-27 over the 70 minutes.

O'Loughlin acknowledges there was many positives from the win over Westmeath, but he feels that one key area that needs to be addressed is the workrate of the players.

"We are just making life uncomfortable for ourselves by letting teams back into games. We drop our workrate and invite teams onto us. Most teams will capitalise on that. We have to learn," said O'Loughlin.

"We are back on track and it's in our own hands, but we must work on what we are conceding or it will crucify us along the way."

    Clare 5-22 Down 0-6

Exactly the result we needed. We had to put away Down and we did so quite well.

Down were simply sloppy, which contributed to our scores. However, we were much improved from our previous performances as our accuracy was greatly improved, in what were very windy conditions. We still had trouble getting the sliothar off the ground and contesting the high ball, but we got a strong win which is exactly what we had to do. Five good goals and points scored from play means we are looking well to take on Laois and Carlow.

That convincing result should give the team a good shot of confidence going into the remaining games in the league.

Another big win should be the aim for our next match, against Kerry. Vital that we keep our momentum now.

Another bad loss by our footballers, look like its 1 step forward, 2 steps back. :(
    Roscommon 0-16 Clare 1-10

Roscommon capitalised on some poor Clare shooting at Cusack Park, Ennis yesterday to earn two valuable points.
Clare recorded 12 wides to the visitors' five, with the Rossies' free-taker Donie Shine in far better form than David Tubridy.
With his side just two points in arrears midway through the second period, the Doonbeg man missed three successive frees,
handing back the initiative to a below-par Roscommon side, who were extremely relieved to leave Ennis with a win.
The Connacht side enjoyed a 0-10 to 0-6 advantage at the half-time whistle but a rejuvenated Clare re-emerged and a Gary Brennan
goal in the 50th minute saw them trail by 0-12 to 1-8. But subsequent misses proved to be the downfall of the home team.
Man of the Match: Donie Shine (Ros)
    Scorers -- Roscommon: D Shine 0-9 (7f), S Kilbride (1f), K Higgins, J Rogers 0-2 each. C Cregg 0-1.
    Clare: G Brennan 1-1, A Clohessy 0-4 (1f), C O'Connor, D Tubridy (1f) 0-2 each, N Browne 0-1.

    Roscommon -- G Claffey ; S McDermott , D Ward , S Ormsby ; N Carty , D Keenan (capt) , S Purcell ; M Finneran , K Higgins ; F Cregg ,
    D Shine , C Cregg ; J Rogers , S Kilbride , G Heneghan . Subs: K Mannion for Finneran (30), J Dunning for Heneghan (h-t),
    C Beirne for Ormsby (56).

    Clare -- J Hayes ; K Hartnett , B Duggan , M McMahon ; L Healy , G Kelly (capt) , S McNeilis ; G Brennan , N Browne ; M Foran , D Blake ,
    C Ryan ; A Clohessy , C O'Connor , D Tubridy .
    Subs: S Brennan for Ryan (34), G Quinlan for Browne (43), D O'Brien for Blake (48), A Cahill for Foran (64), D O'Neill for Quinlan (69).
    Ref -- R McBrien (Leitrim).

Also our hurlers had 2 challange game in the last 4 days. They were against Cork last Thursday and Dublin on Sunday.
    cork 3-25 clare 14 points.
    CLARE: P Brennan. P Vaughan, E Glynn, D O’Donovan. B Bugler, J McInerney, G Quinn. N O’Connell, C Dillon. C Morey, S Collins, J Clancy. D McMahon, J Conlon, C Tierney.

    Subs: C O’Donovan for McMahon (inj ) (17 ) , P Donnellan for Bugler (ht ) , E Hayes for Clancy (ht ) , C Ryan for Dillon (43 ) , J O’Connor for O’Connell (50 )

    Dublin 4-21 Clare 2-23
    Tuohy,
    Vaughan-Cooney-Earley
    Bugler-McInerney-Donnellan
    Nicky-Clancy
    Conlon-Lynch-Collins
    McGrath-McMahon-Ryan

Clearly we are concedeing way too much and our defence needs to be strengthened big time and quickly.

The footballers now face another season in Div 4 in what has been a very disappointing season yet again. Progress is quite a bit off yet I'd say.

The hurlers disappointing results can't really be taken very seriously, as 2 challenge matches in 4 days.. as well as training sessions etc mean they aren't going to be lining out at their strongest. However, it is worrying to concede two big defeats from weakened sides. Although, I wouldn't put it past Sparrow to tell the lads to hold back seeing as we may be facing Cork in MHC.. I don't know.

The hurlers will define their season by performance in the NHL.

      NHL Div 2

      Clare 6-23 Kerry 1-18

Clare coasted to an easy victory over Kerry in Cusack Park on Saturday. John Conlon and Nicky O'Connell had great games, and Kerry never really threatened. Our next two games are vital against Laois and Carlow, if we want to get into the Div 2 final. Sparrow should be putting emphasis on the final v Limerick, and this should be the main goal right now.
IT was all one-way traffic at Cusack Park yesterday afternoon as Clare cruised to a 20-point victory over Kerry in Ennis.

The win pushes the Banner men closer to a place in the Division 2 final, a position they can secure next week if they overcome the challenge of Laois.

The outcome of this tie was clear long before the final whistle was blown. A brace of goals from John Conlon helped the Clare men to a 2-9 to 0-4 lead at the end of the opening quarter. The home side went on to hold a 4-15 to 1-6 half-time advantage thanks to further goals from Nicky O'Connell and Diarmuid McMahon.

Clare added 1-3 without reply in the opening five minutes of the second half, with another strike from McMahon pushing them further ahead.

As the game drew to a close Clare conceded some easy frees which Darragh O'Connell punished, notching an impressive tally of 11 frees in total.

      Scorers -- Clare: D McMahon 2-2; J Conlon 2-1, N O'Connell 1-4; S Collins 0-3, D Honan 0-3, J Clancy 0-3, C McGrath 0-3; C Morey 1-0; C Ryan 0-2, F Lynch 0-1, J McInerney 0-1. Kerry: D O'Connell 0-11f; J Egan 1-1; S Nolan 0-3; M Conway 0-1, R Kenny 0-1, C Harris 0-1.

      Clare -- D Tuohy; P Vaugnan C Cooney, D O'Donovan; B Bugler, J

McInerney, C Dillon; N O'Connell, S Collins; J Conlon, F Lynch, J Clancy; C Ryan, D McMahon, C McGrath. Subs: Honan for Ryan (inj), P Donlon for McInerney, C McInerney for McMahon, C Morey for Lynch, L Markham for O'Connell.

      Kerry -- B Rochford; E Fitzgerald, T Murnane, C Harris; P O'Grady, M Conway, A Royle; P Costello, D Dineen; S Nolan, L Boyle, D Wallace; D O'Connell, R Kenny, J Egan. Subs: J Casey for Royle, T Moloney for Wallace, J Flaherty for Kenny, D Fitzell for Costello.

      Referee -- P Green, Galway.

      NFL Div 4

      Clare 1-7 Longford 0-8

Our footballers will be happy with this result, but alas it is too little too late unfortunately.

Good win for the footballers alright. If only they didnt get 2 lads sent off in there 2 away games so far they would be in with a great shot of promotion.

The hurlers are still annoying me though. Good win alright but they are still concedeing way too much especially from frees. Discipline has been an issue in most games so far.

      NFL 4: Clare shock Longford

      27 March 2011

      Clare 1-7
      Longford 0-8

Longford's promotion hopes were dealt a blow following a surprise Division 4 defeat at home to Clare on Sunday.

Longford went into the game just a point off the pace and with joint-leaders Roscommon and Wicklow facing off at Aughrim, they knew a victory would be enough to send them into the promotion places.

But they spurned a host of chances - hitting 16 wides in total - as Clare, whose only previous wins had come against London and Kilkenny, produced a smash and grab to seal the points.

The visitors were five points clear at the break (1-6 to 0-4), with Gary Brennan fisting his side's goal past Longford keeper Damien Sheridan.

Despite adding just one further score after the interval, Clare held out in a war of attrition, with Longford failing to bridge the gap. The winners finished the game with 14 men with Alan Clohessy dismissed for a second bookable offence at the death.

      Clare: Joe Hayes; B Duggan, L Healy, M McMahon; K Hartnett, G Kelly, S McNeilis; C O'Connor, G Brennan (1-1, 0-1 free); M Tubridy, John Hayes, M Foran; A Clohessy, N Browne, D Tubridy (0-6, four frees). Subs : S Brennan for O'Connor (18 mins), E Lyons for Foran (34), D O'Neill for Lyons (48), D Blake for John Hayes (56), D O'Connor for M Tubridy (64).

      Longford: D Sheridan; D Brady, B Gilleran, D Reilly; S Mulligan, D Masterson, N Farrell; M Brady, B McElvanney; D Barden, P Barden, N Mulligan (0-1); D McElligott, P Dowd, S McCormack (0-6, three frees). Subs: B Kavanagh for Dowd (34 mins), F McGee (0-1) for Mulligan (43), K Diffley for McElvanney (56), P Foy for Masterson (58), K Mulligan for McElligott (69).

      Referee: L Devaney (Mayo).

SOME of the following figures may not appear too relevant as the Clare senior footballers prepare to play London in Cusack Park at 1pm on Saturday. Clare sit on two points from three games to date, having lost to Leitrim and Carlow by a point. Their only win up to now was against Kilkenny in Miltown.

Perhaps the statistics point to one of the reasons why Clare football has been anchored at the bottom rung of Munster and league football for several years. Even the county board cannot be blamed this time.
Two hundred and eighty seven footballers togged out for the quarter-finals of the Sigerson Cup in Dublin last weekend. Not one of those footballers were from Clare. A few other bits of information stand out. Carlow, who beat Clare by a point two weeks ago in their last Division 4 game, had two players on UCD's first 15.
While Sigerson Cup is the premier football event for third level institutions, not a single Clare man took the field in the quarter-finals of the Trench Cup either, which is the second tier. Of nearly 500 footballers who togged out in Dublin last week, that figure didn't include a single Clare man who kicked a competitive ball.
Sigerson winners UCC had 24 Cork and 11 Kerry men on their panel. Clearly there is a divide between Clare sportspeople who attend third level and their counterparts from most counties.
Playing Sigerson or Trench Cup would definitely bring players on and expose them to a high standard of preparation and coaching.

The gaps between east and west are getting bigger and bigger, the population just isn't in west Clare anymore which is having a huge impact on the footballers, but the biggest problem is the background politics where players won't play for their county because of club issues, this has always been the problem with Clare, John Maughan came in and found 30 players that got Clare a provincial title, promotion to the top division, league playoffs and most importantly BELIEF in each other.

IMVHO there are 15 players in every county of Ireland that are good enough to win an All Ireland, what they need is 15 more to support them, a county board to back them and a management team to get them all together. Again, imvho, the whole Paidi O'Shea debacle has put Clare football back 30 years and we are going to be getting nothing but Milltown Massacres year in year out until someone can cut through the bullsh!t.

      Fahy quits camogie post
      01 April 2011

Clare camogie manager Patsy Fahy, along with selectors Ger O'Halloran and Eamon O'Loughlin, have resigned their posts in frustration at a lack of commitment from players.

The only member of the outgoing management who has decided to stay on is Kilmaley's Tom Hogan. A statement issued by the Clare camogie board last week read: "Management have been disappointed and frustrated with numbers at training recently which has been poor due to the college commitments of some players.

"It is an area that they hoped could be improved upon but, with a panel that includes 21 students, this attendance at Tuesday training sessions was not going to improve before the end of the college year in May. This is always a difficult time of the year, one of this occasion which the management were unable to work through."

Team captain Siobhan Lafferty admitted: "Attendance has been poor on Tuesday evenings but there is nothing we can do about that at the minute. Girls have to get ready for exams.

"The county board handling things at present and they have organised a challenge for this Friday and another for next week. These will give the players an opportunity to impress. Some felt that they weren't getting that chance. I am hoping that a trainer will be appointed by the weekend."

      Ryan to miss Laois clash

      Clare's Colin Ryan
      01 April 2011

Colin Ryan looks certain to miss Clare's NHL Division 2 meeting with Laois at O'Moore Park tomorrow.

The former All-Ireland under 21 winner sustained an ankle injury in the early stages of last weekend's win over Kerry and his place in attack is expected to be filled by either Darach Honan or Cathal McInerney.

Banner County boss Ger 'Sparrow' O'Loughlin was far from pleased with last Saturday's victory, despite his side racking up an impressive 6-23.

"Kerry were very poor overall," he said.

"That's the imbalance in Division 2. We are probably bordering on being good enough to be in Division 1 but at times we look as if we are a Division 2 team. Kerry were very weak on the day.

"While it worked out handy enough, we didn't play that well. I thought at times we looked awful loose. We gave them at least 12 or 13 points in the second half from frees and seven or eight of those were needless. I am disappointed with that. We are working on that which is more disappointing."

      Clare 3-13 Laois 3-16

Robbed by a last minute goal. I was gutted and still am. Both sides played a tough game, but we need to improve our ground hurling asap. Honan's yellow was ridiculous imo.

We let this one away from us, and now we have a must win game against Carlow in 2 weeks time. We will seriously need to get our house in order for then. Accuracy will also need to be worked on as our wides cost us again.

Sounds like it was a cracking game. Conceding way too much again and our defence is now a major issue coming up to Championship time. Massive game against Carlow now alright. Have to get to the division final at the very least

It was an enjoyable game alright, bar the last minute! Defense is our Achilles heel right now, and will cost us if not improved in the long run.

Its not looking great at the moment alright. But i really believe we have a lot of good young players coming through and we will be back near the top in next 2 or 3 years.
Really think that Sparrow should bring in Cyril Lyons to help him with the coaching as he has proven himself with the U21 in last few years and can help to bring those lads on to the senior team.
All those lads playing U21 really need to bulk up a small bit more as all the other teams seem to be a lot more physically developed.

I have to admit I havent bothered going over to the park to see Clare this year but the amount of scores being conceded is diabolical(in div 2).God help us in the Championship, unless sparrow knows something that I dont.

Laois, Carlow, and Antrim have all been nicely competitive so losing once to them over the two years isn't that unexpected. Laois and certainly Carlow could easily have drawn with Clare last year and Antrim certainly were worth a draw both years.

Clare have a very young (75% under 23 I understand) squad so they are physically unimposing, probably naive, and not that aggressive. They are bound to struggle as a result and I wasn't that shocked to hear they'd been beaten. I suppose the problem is for Clare that in order to really improve they need division one hurling and the longer they stay in division two the bigger the gap will get between them and the relegated division one teams.

It's a tough situation for them but making significant improvements in terms of their own physicality and playing style is well within their own control. I'd be looking for big improvements in these two areas and I would be very unhappy with the management if I wasn't seeing them.

Incidentally I'd still see the league final as reasonably even should Clare get there. Limerick are a slicker, more focused outfit under O'Grady but Clare look on paper to have at least as good a panel. Even though they seem to be spluttering along at present I wouldn't write Clare off yet.

      'Sparrow' worried after Laois defeat
      08 April 2011

Clare manager Ger 'Sparrow' O'Loughlin has warned that a place in the NHL Division 2 final is far from guaranteed after last Saturday's defeat to Laois.

The Banner County can't afford any slip-up against Carlow in their final game next weekend if they are to join table-toppers Limerick in the final.

"We are just not playing well enough and you would go into the Carlow game worried as we are only hitting it in phases. Our destiny is in our own hands, but we definitely need to improve," O'Loughlin said.

Reflecting on last weekend's 3-13 to 3-16 reversal, the former All-Ireland winning forward said: "We are bitterly disappointed with the loss, but from the management point of view we learned a lot. Some fellas will have to pick things up or else they don't deserve to be out on the field.

"We just to have pick ourselves up. It's in our own hands. If we beat Carlow in two weeks' time, we will be okay."

I think we'll come out fighting against Carlow. Making the final and winning it is the most important thing for us this season. It is also pivotal for the squads development.

      Wicklow 1-17 0-20 Clare

Big result for the footballers today. Although it has been a disastrous League for the Clare football squad they will take heart from a draw against Wicklow, when they were tipped for a beating.

Still cant believe that we scored 20 points in a match :p and still didnt win

I think management and players will be very disappointed overall with their league campaign. They have showed glimpses of good play and also beat finalists Longford. Discipline and shooting seemed to be there main problem.

      Sparrow won't underestimate Carlow

      Clare hurling manager Ger O'Loughlin
      15 April 2011

Clare hurling manager Ger 'Sparrow' O'Loughlin stresses that the Banner will not be taking Carlow for granted when the sides meet in the last round of the Allianz NHL division 2 on Sunday.

Following Clare's surprise defeat to Laois last time out, the Banner must defeat Carlow to reach the division 2 final or face the prospect of another term in the second tier.

They still have the 'small' problem of defeating Limerick in the final, but O'Loughlin is not looking beyond the Carlow game.

"We have to make sure we are tuned in and hit the ground running so that we can do ourselves justice on the day," said O'Loughlin. "We can't underestimate Carlow. They have made good strides in the last two years."

Clare have a number of injury concerns ahead of the Carlow match as Colin Ryan, Domhnal O'Donovan and Brendan Bugler have all been struggling of late, but are expected to available for selection on Sunday.

Clare 4-28 Carlow 8 points

Well they got the job done anyway. Amazing what the right attitude can do to a team.

Ballyea won U21 B Championship today by around 12 points.

Good result from the hurlers today, I would almost say that their next match (Div 2 final) is the most important game of the year, another year in division 2 won't do this young team any favours

Great scoreline.Feel a bit sorry for Carlow. They should have beat Clare last year. The game against Limerick seems a lot more appealing now.:D.The management must have had em fired up today.

Div 2 Final is one of the most important games for Clare in recent years. If we don't get inton to Div 1 next year we are in serious trouble.

While I was delighted with todays result, it doesn't do us or Carlow any good. It shows that we need to be playing teams who are competitive at Div 1 level, and it can't be good for Carlow to experience heavy defeats like that.

I do however believe we can beat Limerick. Today and in last few games the lads have hurled well, with some great points and goals.

Great to hear we won the toss and the Div 2 final is on in Cusack Park on April 30th with a 7pm throw in.

Thats a massive boost for us. Bit harsh on Limerick seeing as though they topped the group.

Can really see us beating them now. Forwards seem to be on form and we have a genuine goal threat now.

Also, the Clare minor footballers bounced back from there defeat to Cork with a win over Waterford on saturday night. Think scoreline was 4-14 to 1-9. Now play Limerick on Saturday for place in semi's.

I sincerely hope the people of Clare get behind the lads.

I'm absolutely delighted it's on in Ennis! :D

Tough on Limerick to be fair. Having topped the group the toss should have been Limerick or neutral - but anyway. This could be a cracker. Clare are scoring for fun lately but I fancy Limerick to win a tight game.

Guys, don't waste your sympathy on Limerick. Our county board saw the potential for bring a bit of revenue into the Gaelic Grounds and took a stupid risk which was not in the best interests of our players, management and fans, a stupid risk which has ultimately made things much harder for the team after topping the group with a 100% record.

The mistake of tossing for home advantage against Clare was made in 1972, and 1993- yes, long time ago on both counts but both times resulted in home advantage for Clare- who won well both times. History set to repeat itself once more. Cusack Park has not been a happy hunting ground for Limerick down the years, we may have had a good win there in February but I can't see Clare letting Limerick win on their home patch twice in 3 months.

Crazy decision by our county board who as usual only care about lining their own pockets.

Oh my, what a day out, Munster semi-final against the Hairy Queens at 1, hurling final afterwards, AND it's a bank holiday. Better tell Mrs. Clareman not to make plans :)

Here's hoping, it's days like this that makes being a sports fan worthwhile, might try to organise a game of golf inbetween the matches to make it a complete sporting day
