Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Cheap run around

    Ok, so I am looking for a cheap run around. Small engine as it will be used by new driver. Something that is reliable.



    Only thing is it needs to be automatic. Manual will not be an option.
    Needs to be decent size so it will hold a couple of children seats.



    I don't really have an idea in this space, I was going to buy something like a Renault Zoe with battery rental but they are going up in price and it would be nearly 6-7k landed.


    I want to keep budget low. Would love to stick to 1k, but can probably stretch that if something good.

    How many child seats we are talking about ?

    Focus mk2, Kia ceed, hyundai i30 in petrol forms comes to my mind if you can bump your budget to 2-3k.

    New Driver, Childseats....sounds like they need a hummer or a bumper car. Wouldn't be putting them in something as useful as a tayto bag in a crash.

    I would also throw prius mk2 there as they are reliable, cheap to insure and pretty safe cars.

    Maybe to clarify a little, the driver will be new in Ireland but experienced in Europe

    As the driver will be on European license they will be counted as a new driver in Ireland for our lovely insurance. Hence the requirement for a small engine to try and reduce the insurance.

    Even worse used to the other side of road. Not sure about the engine size is it not more to do with the insurance band of the car.

    Been looking myself. Jazz ticks all boxes, bar cheap. Imports are reasonable, but I think they are penalised by insurance cause they are imports. Could be wrong though.

    The imports have japanese on the interior screen though and the radio is at different FM band point.

    They don't always follow those rules. I've only had a licence 18 months or so and whenever I've rang for quotes with a range of cars, bigger engines were typically cheaper for me.

    That's a UK thing. Not an ounce of transperancy here regarding anticipating the costs to insure a vehicle.

    Renault Clio - very simple, very reliable, comfortable, but in automatic you won't get them in small engine size: 1.6 petrol only usually, but did come across this on DD:

    You're not going to get a good, safe small car that doesn't need a pile of work done to it for 1k imho.

    Whats the story with the 10 year rule? do insurance companies still have issue with car that are over 10 years odl?

    I've no problem they tell me it's in a bracket lower etc so cheaper to insure. Saving about €200 going from 240bhp car to 235bhp as it's in a lower class.
    Can't remember what she said, something like one is in group 32 and the new one is in 28... something like that.

    If you say you own the car when looking for quotes it works better. Just give a reg of an indentical car.
