There was a large Convent in our local town, and while I was at national school, the order became more "liberal"
The nuns were allowed out in public more, and allowed to visit hairdressers and drive, etc.
FIAT was a bigger player at the time, and the Nuns supported the marque to the hilt. 127's, and 131's were popular and a source of amusement to us, as many of the drivers were learning in their 50's and 60's.

It was Toyota with our nuns, plastic still on the seats complete with Hugh Boggan sticker in the back window. The priests were into their Opels at that time, Ferrybank motors of course.

a distant flamboyant/acter/musical cousin of mine from dublin joined the priesthood in the 80s and by the time of my 'confo' he had worked his way up to a jazz hands shiny 911

Haha i used to work in ferrybank as mechanic at the time in the 90s and early 00s few of the clonard nuns had four 92 wx corsa that were immaculate clean with tiny milage on them I used to service them once a year was the easiest id ever do.

Remember one priests car was a 94 vectra can't remember which priest it was but at the turn of the millennium he changed it for a new vectra and his old one had only few thousand mile on it.

The money in the religious orders must have dropped a lot from the 70's. The priest we had in secondary school drove a beautiful 70's Humber Sceptre, GZR I can't remember the numbers, the teachers in their 4L's and Mk2 escorts were green with envy. It was a cracking motor in fairness and to give him his dues he was a sound guy. I met him recently and he's exactly the same a couple of darts with the heart put him off the whiskey otherwise he's still his big bold self.

When I was in secondary, early '80's, our school chaplain had a black Golf GTI MK1. He had a supposed Speed Gun detector on the dash and claimed it worked perfectly. I suspect his dog collar was a much more effective anti-speeding ticket device.

My 2 door MK 3 Cortina was supposedly a priest owned, one owner car before I got it. Original Dublin reg.
Unfortunately the original log book was lost during the 20 years it was off the road so no way of confirming that, 2 people have told me that the story is true, doesn't bother me either way though, as it took me a long time to find any Irish 2 door to buy.

We're a very good car. Suspension and engines were taken from the Peugeot 306.

Yeah, had a 1.1 Peugeot 106 with one of those.

    The novelty soon wore off!

recently in Bray - its a 92 Toyota - is it a Sprinter, or just a Corolla of sorts?? it looked to be in decent condition

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,074 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

Yesterday in east Cork I saw an '84. It was a light blue with noticeable rust in places. It looked initially like an Escort MKII but the rear end might have been boxier. Pity I didn't get a closer look.

Wouldn't be a huge fan of the mods to the Shuttle but they are unbelievably rare thesedays and its great to see one in use. The Fiesta I thought was sad to see in its state as it looked spotless, it was in Duffys. The Mazda I know to be a daily driver.

Missed out on a Mk3 Fiesta Courier van also! Gutted

Got a spin in a Mk3 Fiesta today - 1995 learner's car - nothing really special but I can't remember the last time I was in one.

Also an original Irish reg Landrover down @ Dollymount beach - XIC reg I think

    No photos sadly

a very rusty Rangie - I had a look on the screen but there was no NCT - not sure of the year from the reg whether it would be NCT exempt or not, but i'd say its being held together with sticky tape and bungee cords judging by the state of the tailgate.

Also, a Renault 9 automatic. I haven't seen this around the area before, but I'd hazard a guess that its one owner from new going by the mature occupants - nice to see if it is the case.
