    There's nothing like boards.ie with it's wide range of topics. Most German sites are more into chatten than messaging and tend to be set up along the lines of facebook.

    As above, AFAIK they tend towards social networking sites and chatrooms as opposed to a message board type format.

    Toytown Germany is a fantastic resource, with a big emphasis on real-world meet-ups. I made loads of friends from it when I lived in Erlangen.

    I probably won't go near these sites.
    My german is very basic & the sites are probably full of slang.

    if I learned all the words, I'd end up sounding silly:D

    Toytown Germany is an English-speaking forum.

    Deutsche in London is in German.
