Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ok, I've read a small bit on it, and you are correct insofar in high-income countries legalisation has resulted in an increase of trafficking, but also legalisation is needed to protect those who willingly work in the industry. In my quick research, I've found a survey by the University of Leeds of sex workers who like their job, and even find it rewarding and fun, and have previous employments in healthcare and have third level qualifications. They believe making it illegal, even in the Swedish model, will leave them open to abuse/assault. So it seems a lot more needs to be done in this sector, and a simple 'Make it il/legal' won't resolve this.

    https://essl.leeds.ac.uk/sociology/article/637/survey-by-dr-teela-sanders-reveals-previous-professions-of-sex-workers

I’m getting a 404 from that link. It doesn’t surprise me that some sex workers who voluntarily chose the profession enjoy it. However, I’d be interested to see follow ups after five, 10, 15 years to assess long-term impact.

That doesn’t really contradict any of the points about trafficking. Unless trafficking can be eradicated (or close to it) by making it legal, the negatives still outweigh the positives for me.

I'd be pro choice on prostituiton and believe that women should have full autonomy over their bodies therefore I believe that they should be allowed to have sex in exchange for money if they wish. Stopping women from doing so is misogyny in my view.

It's not illegal for women to have sex for money

More needs to be done to protect both those trafficked against their will and those who choose to have sex for money. Regarding the latter, 2 sex workers cannot work out of the same premises because of our stupid f*cking law, it's defined as a brothel. WHATEVER HAPPENED TO SAFETY IN NUMBERS, BECAUSE THIS STUPID F*CKING LAW ALLOWS FOR THIS TO HAPPEN:

14 years?? This ANIMAL should be locked up FOR LIFE. My blood boils with anger equally to how physically sick this makes me. He should be branded as well, but then I may be allowing my emotions to get the better of me on that one. Regardless, this animal should never again be allowed to see the light of day!

Making the purchase of sex outright illegal HAS DONE NOTHING to help human trafficking, and has made it more dangerous for those who have sex for money of their own free will. One of those victims above happened AFTER the law change in 2017.

Likewise I believe that the straight legalising of the purchase of sex would actually have similar outcomes.

No heavy handed or simple black 'n' white methods will ever help either the victims of human trafficking or make things safer for those that choose have sex for money. So long as ignorance and bigoted ideologies are allowed to be a one sided contribution towards the whole thing, then nothing will ever get better for anyone and will only ever continue to make things worse before it gets better.

If there were 4 people in Ireland excluding the American woman who gets an inordinate amount of airtime that chose prostitution I would be surprised.

I don't think anyone except maybe the criminals know how many are doing it voluntarily, but it's way more than 4. That's the guess of someone who doesn't know what they're talking about and isn't bothered to find out.

    I'm not a socieologist.
No harm done! Seems to be the view of some people on here, sure aren't the purveyors of sexual services into it, a kink if you will.

A piece from the recent Sunday World article I referenced earlier will stay with me:

The grubby pimp was meeting a reporter who was posing as a woman who said she wanted to get into the sex industry.

He said to her that she'd be having sex with about five men a day and he warned her that her body would hurt.

will Prostitution be badly affected by the current covid 19 crisis ??

You kid, but this is an argument for legalisation. If brothels were a normal business, they could put in health checks, or be told to close like the pubs. Right now? You'd hope people are smart enough not to take the risk, but ... well... I already mentioned the pubs.

A little confused here usually if adverts were trying to get me to buy it I wouldn’t buy it

And I won’t ;) not buying that one either, nice try.

    I expect it will.

Makes the ads a bit pointless but I suppose they have to burn up the free money from the dormant accounts fund.

I thought the line asking if your wife would believe you "only wanted the girlfriend experience" was rather telling...

From what I've seen on the escort sites, the term "girlfriend experience" means the escort providing the service is happy to kiss the client during their meeting (i.e. on top of the other sexual activities being conducted). The way the phrase is used in the ad suggests that the term means something more innocent; a client hiring an escort for a dinner date with no sex involved perhaps? Or is the suggestion that somehow the sexual act being purchased being more like a loving sexual experience makes it a lesser betrayal of one's spouse than if he'd paid for a quick "suck and fuck" with no kissing or feigned "intimacy" involved?

Either way, the line just brought the famous line from The Princess Bride to mind: “You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means”. The second thing that came to mind was that maybe people with such a poor understanding of something shouldn't be taking out radio ads to lecture the rest of us about it.

Looked online there in Dublin alone, filtered by Italian, 10 matches. I'm sure there are people that reckless that will ensure they won't go hungry.

Has anyone actually done some research into what percentage of prostitutes in Ireland are coerced and what percentage are doing it of their own free will?

I think it would be better if prostitution was legal in certain area,s like in holland
They have to be tested to show they do not have std.s and they pay tax.
They ad on the radio is pointless ,it basicly says do not go to an escort as you will be arrested and your wife and kids will find out.
Theres 1000,s of single people out there ,
lots of rich people visit ireland tourists and business people.
Theres escorts in every western country.
If there was no demand the escorts would do something else.
the law makes it more dangerous, 2 women working out of an apartment is defined as a brothel.
