Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The thread on Hook, standup comedy, and so does society need an outlet for wrong think or ideas that go again the prevailing norms, does offensive serve a purpose or is it always just offensive?

Offensive is essential once it is not based on malice.

Just a "right think", if it is based on rational thinking, taking into accounts facts and coming to it's own conclusions, absolutely.

If it's based on gut feelings, malice, or egocentrism, it needs to be treated with a lot of caution, just as "right think".

The issue is there is a blur between being contrarian and deeming that to be offensive i.e. where someone who disagreeing with you get's equated to them being offensive to you.

Personally I think it does as it creates debate

What I think is much more worrying is the current trend of shouting down and stiffing debate.

(by the way that's not to say I don't think that wrong (or different) think can't be expressed in a respectful manner.

Just as I believe there is no such thing as the 'right not to be offended' I also don't think there is such a think as the 'right to be offensive'.

As for those people who believe that a different opinion (which they don't agree with) expressed in a respectful manner is offensive just because they don't agree with it.

Well they can f*ck off :D

Who decides what the "wrong think" is?

Personally I don't believe it's right that Ireland is housing refugees when then are families homeless in the country. But I also don't believe that the state should be housing people for life. That's considered wrong think by plenty, including one of my college lecturers but others might agree.

I don't think there is anything wrong with having contrary opinions as long as you can debate them rationally and they are not formed by wild, ridiculous beliefs.
