Portlaoise to Dublin

    Hello good people of boards.ie

    I'm about to move to Portlaoise from Dublin, and was wondering about the logistics of commuting Portlaoise - Dublin every day for the next month or so (as I've given notice at work)
    I've done a bit of research and the train is horrendously expensive, does anyone have any better ideas? I know that Kavanagh do a bus service, any good? Does anyone else do this and what should I be looking to budget for transport wise?

    Where about's in Dublin, also train can work out OK if you buy a monthly ticket and get tax relief on it

    Capel St, could walk from Heuston or jump on the Luas I suppose, just looking at my options

    How about you give proper details of your locations, times, days of work, personal preferences, priorities such as cost or travelling time, etc instead of making a vague request and then drip-feeding additional facts every time someone suggests something?

    Since you asked so nicely, I'm going to be living at Parkside which is on the AbbeyLeix Rd, I would potentially work Monday to Friday from 9-4.10, I'm looking at different options to get an idea about cost and travelling time, and my personal preference is Barry's Tea, strong with two sugars.

    Monthly train ticket is €362 https://www.taxsaver.ie/Ticket-Types/Rail-point-to-point-tickets/ but you can get 20 to 40% off that depending on your tax rate.

    I used to work in Dublin and I commuted from Tullamore (similar distance) and I found the train far better, with the bus there are always seat/traffic issue to contend with

    Done it by train for 11 years - you get used to it.

    The train is a billion times better that the bus IMHO.

    You wouldn't have to walk to the hospital to get the Green Bus , it also picks up/drops off at the bus stop at the Shopping Centre , near Supermacs.

    Taking your life into your own hands by using Dublin Coach from what I hear not to mention the risk of being stranded on the side of a motorway as I believe they break down on a regular basis. Definitely wouldn't consider them if I had to use them for a regular commute.

    No, cycling to the bus stop. Bit much cycling to dublin from portlaoise

    You'd be insane to use Dublin Coach to the City centre, it uses the old road through Ballybrittas, Monasterevin, Kildare, Newbridge and Naas and then you need to change at Red Cow either to a different DC or the Luas. It would take at least 2 hours off-peak, god knows how much longer at rush hour.

    There are 3 sensible Bus options Portlaoise - City.

    I get it in the early hours of the morning (3.30am service) to the airport for the early flight - generally two hours but I've been on it 3 hours just from the Red Cow when Irish Rail went on strike.

    Not worth it for the commute.
