Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Quatertown Mill near Mallow Co Cork

Very interesting post. Despite all the years I spent farting about in the GSRPS Mallow depot and the nearby beet sidings, I had no idea that there was anything left of Webb's Mills at Quartertown Mill let alone track. I can't remember when the siding closed but even before my time! The IRRS ran a 'xxx' special down the siding in the 1960s. Joe St.Leger will have pics - I'll give a ring and see if he can dig something out.

I can't find anything online but I seem to remember that the Down Mail paid an unscheduled visit to the branch many years ago (in GSWR days) at speed! :D

I'm guessing this was during the civil war? Similar to some of the adventures to be had on the DSER at the time?

I think it was due to fog and it was before the Civil War. It will be in the IRRS Journal no doubt.

Apparently the branch was 3/4 of a mile long and was built about 1864 at the expense of the Mill's owners. That siding looks in remarkably good nick after all these years and I wonder was it relaid after closure?

as afr as I could see, all the chairs are gswr and so not necessarily original.theres lso a stockade made of old sleepers on site, no idea if they came from the branch or were brought in though

    From IRRS Journal 157

Webb’s siding, at MP ¼, catered for an adjacent flour mill. It had no run around facility and it was permissible to propel a maximum of 12 wagons and van from Mallow station into the two sidings. A shunter, who acted as guard, travelled as brakes man in the van, in front of the train. The siding was controlled by a ground frame and a one-staff subsidiary instrument. A train could therefore be locked in the sidings and the mainline be clear for the passage of trains. The siding closed on 23 September 1962 .

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

yes I've heard that before, however , if the siding is genuine, (and it looks it) the siding would have to be worked loco first from mallow and propelled back. This makes sense not just because of the the layout of the siding but because it would not involve propelling through the facing points at the junction of the killarney line.

How about you nip down to Rathmore and check-out what's left of the sidings there? You used to be able to see some of the remains of them on the Down side well into the 1980s.

I knew of this place before but I had long thought that there wasn't a trace of the siding left, so this is a surprise! I must visit it sometime for myself.:D

The red painted walls are 20th century buildings. There was a building between the railway and the road. There is a not very visible mill race also, where the red railings are.

The mill race starts here: http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,553850,596290,5,3

In this view http://i44.tinypic.com/axo3dg.jpg the tracks would have extended to the end of the near building, but not to the far building. One can imagine a small run off area for the loco after the goods platform ended. Interesting that the goods platform would have been about flush with the train deck, when so many passenger platforms weren't. :)

the two mill buildings can be seen here: http://maps.google.ie/maps?q=Mallow&hl=en&ll=52.128562,-8.667462&spn=0.001317,0.009645&sll=53.401034,-8.307638&sspn=6.172386,19.753418&vpsrc=6&hnear=Mallow,+County+Cork&t=m&layer=c&cbll=52.128664,-8.667393&panoid=mZyuAW-y0QhB47WoyAOyHA&cbp=12,72.45,,0,-3&z=17

Just for clarity, Rathmore and Quarterstown are two seperate places. Quarterstown Ind Estate is about a mile west of Mallow, while Rathmore is about 10 miles further on. In reading your posts both you JD and Corktina are jumping from one to the other, a person not familier with the area would think you are talking about the same place.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

jumping around? post 9, an off topic one admittedly replied to by post 11, which qouted post 9. Hardly that confusing surely?

Not if your from Cork, but for someone not familier with the area, that's all I'm saying.

you should have gave a spin to the sugar factory 3 minutes away, the level crossing is still there and the line going into the factory

Is the water tank and turntable still in the beet sidings? On Google when you look in from the road the tank appears missing but you can't see the turntable pit.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

latterly there was just one road in and a run round loop. There is nothing at all now. I beleiver there were sidings paralell to the road at one stage, but these were turned into a lorry waiting area a long time back now.

Oh yes it is. go past the mill and turn right and its about 1.5 miles

The turntable is gone but the water tank is still there, the rail yard is still there full of container carriages but half of it including the flats have been eaten up by thorns and bryers but i think the 100 foot section from the yard to the road at the crossing has been removed but the line still crosses the road and its all still there in the factory minus the factory :D

Things have changed a bit at the Mallow Beet Factory since Joe St.Leger took this photograph (circa 1987) of a GSRPS work party at the level crossing. It was an historic moment as it was the first day that the two Rustons were moved under their own power to the beet sidings for use by GSRPS volunteers working on dismantling track panels.

    Beet%2B005.JPG

A view a few weeks later with the former Cork (?) Breakdown crane in use on the track panel contract. The remains of the unfortunate crane is marooned in the carpark at Mallow, while one of the Rustons is done-up as a joke steam locomotive at the Clonakilty Model Railway Village.

How long ago since the Rustons were fired up, JD? Also, who would own them at this stage?

As far as I know the one at Clonakilty has never started since it left Mallow circa 1987? It went to Fenit to view the harbour for a year or two before ending up at Clonakilty. The other one ended up sold or scrapped - could be at Belturbet.

There's another 'preserved' Ruston (ex.CSE Thurles) and (GSRPS Mallow) at the "Ramble Inn" in Halfway. The village is situated 6 miles from Cork Airport, on the L2231, and is just off the N71 and R589 roads (Halfway to Bandon), which is the main road corridor connecting Cork city and West Cork, and eventually onto Kerry.

Pic below. If you study it carefully you can just see the Ruston in the background - as far as I know it still belongs to the GSRPS 'renegade' steam section. :D

This is the Ruston in Belturbet, looking a bit sorry for itself. :( The one at Halfway does look quite smart.

I recall MK telling me years back that he sourced one from the sugar company; shock horror him leaving out a few via's of it's trip to the border town  but given that you recall two and that Belturbet has one, it's a fair chance that it is indeed it. Last time I saw it up there, it's in aestethic reasonable condition and under a roof though it's hosted a few cider parties in it's time, as has the brake fan attached to it. It had a better run of luck than the carriage they got as well

One of the carriages at Belturbet (the 6 wheeler) is ex.Waterford, Limerick & Western Railway Family Saloon/Royal Saloon #900 of 1890 and should be in Cultra. By whose authority it ended up in Belturbet is beyond me as I was not consulted and my approval would have been needed.

You mean the one at Mallow? Collapsed where it was sat a couple of years ago. Completely rotten through after 40-50(?) odd years in the open.

If you mean the body of the GSWR 'birdcage' 6 wheel brakevan that was in the Mallow beet sidings - it was another of my purchases that never escaped from where it lay. A regular Dr.Cox - that's me. :D

    k13.jpg

Would have looked something like this in its heyday but obviously of no historical importance whatsoever.

All the stuff from the Buttevant crash was removed at the time of the crash - presumably to Inchicore - and the stuff at Mallow was the Great Southern Railway Preservation Society preservation depot. Thread here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=66963749

Really? God i always taught differntly!

Was there much went on there? I done ever remember seeing any work going on there, i was in there one time and it just seemed to be all over grown with old carriages and the old CIE containers on flats.

the turntable was there alright but stayed clear of it, I Understand a kid was killed while messing about on it years ago.

EDIT: After reading that it seems the rolling stock was removed to rathpeacon in 89 or there abouts, the stuff im referring to was there long after that, in fact it was there up until about 2007 until they brought in the diggers and totally cleared the yard, 2007 is only a rough figure. it may have been 06 or 05.

It was the old type DMU that was there or at least i think its what its called, ill search pics. there was also 2 carriages from it and a few flats.

One of these and 2 carriages were there

All the best rolling stock (the 1950s carriages and a large number of freight vehicles) was removed to Rathpeacon and subsequently scrapped, while the vintage items such as six-wheelers, two G-class diesel locomotives, 2 Rustons, the steam crane, the DMU type vehicle (Raicar B from the SL&NCR), various box vans etc.etc. were marooned at Mallow. The two G-class were sold to the Irish Traction Group, Railcar B ended up at Downpatrick, the six-wheelers went to an hotel in Clifden, Belturbet Heritage Centre, Downpatrick etc.etc. - a sorry outcome but inevitable as far back as 1983.

According to Johnson's Atlas & Gazetteer the Mallow Beet Factory Siding was opened in 1934. It served the Beet Factory, closed c.1974, lifted c.1980 but re-laid into factory 1989/90.
