I'm thinking of putting my Rheavendors Nescafe Lioness machine out in Thurles town on my porch if I can get a mains and power connection. It won't be Nescafe coffee ( im thinking of putting Aldi/Lidl coffee in it) but it'll be free. The only downside it's a instant freeze dried coffee vending machine.

People are getting ripped off left right and centre. If it hits sales in Thurles town then maybe they'll reduce their prices.

Well make sure you have your insurance sorted. If someone gets (or claims to get) a dose of the trots after your coffee, or burns themself making it, sure you'll have a grand oul claim against you.

In the retail business you have a lot more costs than the machine & the coffee.

Rates - for a 2000 sq ft convenience store in a medium sized town that could be €20,000 - €30,000 a year.

Staff - Even at minimu wage, staff costs are over €12 per hour when holidays and prsi are taken into account.

Food Hygiene regs + records. - Takes a lot of staff time + has costs and even applies to just selling coffee.

Insurance - can be 3-4k for a small food premises

So once you have you haccp cert, registered with HSE, get commercial planning and pay commercial rates (even if giving away free) and then of course public liability insurance, pop you machine out and see how you get on. :)

    :D

It's a pub so I'll have to have pretty much all of the above sorted.

There's a shop literally next door charging €2.90 per cup.

A lioness actually cost a lot more to run than a bean/ground coffee machine. You can buy bean/ground coffee in Lidl and Aldi for under €2. 150g bag of Nescafe is currently €6 -€7. The markup they are making on this coffee must be huge. The two Costcutters in Thurles had Lionesses and were €1.30 A cup. They now have hipster coffee and are charging €2.40 a cup.

We all know the mark up on many goods. Your french fries cost you €2.80, 2 potatoes 40C.
As someone in the trade said, best return is onion rings. 5/6 servings from one large onion, €13/14 from 30c .
Then every one going to the chip shop is being ripped off.
Buy your stuff, once a month in Iceland and go home to cook it.

I see Centra have put up the price of Frank and Honest coffee by 10c. It's now 2.60 for a regular coffee. Sneaky...

If they advertised it as €2.50 and charged your card €2.60 it would be sneaky. As it is, it's just a price increase.

Do Musgraves dictate the retail price?

Not sure about the Fianna Fail bit, but, personally, in general, I dont think Ireland is a rip offf either. I think people try to downgrade what it takes to supply goods or a service, not taking into account tradespeople's expertise, expenses, insurance or training, or warranty.

In this case for example, sure its only a spoon of coffee and hot water. How can you charge €2.80? Well, think about all the expenses involved.

These same people expect others though to pay them for whatever they do, but thats not in the spirit of things, is it.

For me, a rip off by definition is when you think you are paying one price and you get charged another. In this case, the coffee is €2.80, buy it or not.

Also, I don't mind the Frank & Honest Coffee, Im not a big coffee drinker, but have bought a couple of them and have no complaints.

    Spoon of coffee?

It's not Maxwell House that comes out of these machines

Yes, they spent x amount on branding and marketing the s***e to the masses so they gotta make it back...

I got a self service vending coffee in Lidl in Bantry for €1. Decent stuff. It's not that long ago that I would get a tea in supervalu near work for 1.40, until I went in one day and the same machine was moved beside the new Rank and Compost deli area, with the prices doubled for a cuppa. Thing is, they lost my custom for the eats as well I was so pissed off.

Bewleys just 1.35 from machine in Dunnes and 5 times nicer than frank and honest made with the hot water first then substandard coffee added

Price is gone up another 10c now to €2.70. So that is two price increases in a matter of weeks....what a joke!

I’m a fussy coffee drinker and usually steer well clear of petrol station coffee. I’m okay with Frank & Honest though

Which is all R'nH is. Mini supermarket automatic machine made take out convenience store, coffee, dressed up in a marketing department word image, conjuring up notions of integrity, credibilty, worthiness. It's still the same old soup but with the machine moved from the end of the biscuit aisle to the carefully groomed deli counter. You could do the same with an 89c centra/ londis/supervalu generic sliced pan. Give it it's own concept, say, "The Miller's Choice" or "The Harvest Bread Company", (adding the word 'Company' is a common branding trick). Put said cheap pans in a bespoke rustic display rack, and watch the suckers paying €2-€3 a go. This is how you turn an everyday commodity or staple into a desirable perception. You'll even convince yourself it's on a par with premium product from a specialist vendor, because of it's doubled price and alluring makeover. It's not. It should be branded CashCow Coffee.

BtW, in the Netherlands, the auto coffee machines in the biggest supermarket chain, (Albert Heinz), dispense the coffee to customers for FREE. Nip in and buy a danish, have a coffee free with that.

Insomina still charging a reasonable €2.25 for a regular coffee, imo not just in terms of price they have really nice coffee so fair play to them for not increasing prices unlike their competitors shafting joe public!

Insomnia never passed on the VAT decrease back in 2011. I'm sure they've pocketed enough on that to afford not to increase their price of a basic cup of coffee this time.

Insomnia shafted their customers back then.

Can anyone tell me if Frank and Honest company have stopped doing loyalty cards. My local Centra told me yesterday they couldn't stamp my card as the company is not doing it any more .

Frank and Beans would have worked better for the name. Instead of Frank and Honest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,895 ✭✭✭deezell

I like "Rank and Compost". Worst coffee I got recently though, by miles, a couple of takeouts from Supermacs drivethrough in Carrick on Shannon. Black, flat, oily tasteless very hot water. No hint of any flavour. Obviously decanted from a large filter coffe jug stewing away all day until any essential coffe aromas and flavours were completely evaporated. Undrinkable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,758 ✭✭✭Xterminator

worst i got was from a lidl coffee dispenser.

price was 1 euro, volume was maybe 5 ounces? But the taste made the liffey water seem good in comparison. so to anyone who hates frank an honest, try lidl coffee - it will seem much more palatable in the aftermath.

But do yourself a favour and get a packet of gum 1st! :)

Costa is way worse along with Starbucks I like the Frank and Honest but never buy it anymore as we have the machine at work and it's free..

    OP has a point

Supervalu's Frank & Honest machine churns out an self-service Americano in a paper cup for 2.70 while you can have a proper sit down Americano in the Douglas and Kaldi just across the street for 2.50.

    Not a great business model.

I got one in my local Supervalu last Thursday - although I had to ask at the info. desk as they weren't displayed at the coffee machine.

I recently tried a cup of Rosa at a Maxol petrol station - it was really lovely - and I'm fussy about my coffee!

Further to my satisfactory Lidl coffee in Bantry, I was there again and machine was out of order. Later I reluctantly self served two F&H coffees in Bantry Supervalu. No Crema head on the coffee, appalled to see a dark liquid followed by clear hot water filling the cup. I tasted before paying, gagged, left them down and walked away. On the way out I noticed they had a little cafe, serving barrista machine coffee, two of them to go for less than the autopiss. Strange.

Isn't this how Americano coffee is supposed to be made??

High pressure hot water through the ground beans, really a double espresso, just with a longer cycle of hot water. It will begin to go from very dark brown to lighter towards the end. Stop it at the point you desire.
What I seen looked like a shot of syrup, flow stopped, then a a long shot of hot water. The MiWadi of Coffee.

Pretty sure the "classic" way to make an Americano is an espresso mixed with 1-2 times the volume in water. Water in the mug and pour the espresso in on top as opposed to the way F&H do it

Rosa is being made by Bewleys.
All previous branded coffee stands changed to new brand, even in Dunnes.
    Nice bitter strong taste .

My method for 'convienience store' coffee...

    Place cup under nozzle.

Allow the coffee to be poured in

When it stops, take out the cup, put another cup in to collect the hot water..

When that stops, place the cup with the coffee back under , and start again.

You then have 2 shots of coffee in the cup, and just take it out from under the nozzle when you have enough hot water.

I like my coffee stronger than the usual brown water you get in stores/garages ...

Rosa is good. One thing that bothers me. Why no milk sachets? Sometimes only a manky jug. If you're buying for 2+, it's impossible to judge others' milk requirements, and especially a tea, where you want the teabag to brew for a while. At least Macs and Burger King have sachets.

NOTE RE BK IN GARAGE FORECOURTS.

Some BKs seem to have adjusted beverage price up to match the expensive price of the connected shop. MACS otoh, still charge €2 in the common service forecourts on the M6 Circle K near Athlone, and on the M9 one at Kilcullen. Value! and sachets.

2:70 now for a regular frank and honest and it still tastes as bad as the first day it came out. Before this shower came along everywhere, EVERYWHERE charged a max of €2 a cup. Insomnia was a far superior coffee for €1.80.

If they charge me 2.20 -> 2.70 for coffee, i will get what i pay for - not the coffee flavoured water they put out....

Coffee is a status thing to me. I don't see people half as often looking to go for a cup of tea.

It's akin to paying 20 euro for a pizza. So over priced for what you get.

Because UHT milk (generally, not universally) tastes awful (super sweet) to Irish palates and as a result most people massively prefer using fresh.
