Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi folks

Hoping someone can give me a rough guestimate on this. Car broke down on Saturday afternoon. Literally started to shudder, wouldnt go into gear and then heard a thud. Thankfully wasnt going fast as had 2 kids in the car.
Mechanic towed the car for me and rang me to tell me the left hand engine manifold broke and the engine slipped and damaged the left hand drive shaft.

Just wondering what this will cost me to repair? 2012 Ford Focus diesel. Just want to have an idea of what to brace myself for :)

How much did your mechanic estimate the repair to cost?

Nothing yet. He's a sound guy so dont think he'd be out to screw me. He's waiting on parts. Im just trying to ease the shock :)

Could be tomorrow evening before he'll have a cost

Surely it was the lh mount that broke? Shouldn't be too much if just replacing mount and driveshaft..300 to 400 maybe.

It depends on what needs replacing or repairing, and on are new or used parts being used I'd say.

So the engine mount sheered off and the engine fell? Damaging the driveshaft? Were there any symptoms before this? Vibrating? Seems like a crazy failure to me. Hard to estimate costs here, hard to know how much collateral damage there is.

Literally came to a stop, turned left. Noticed slight shuddering so pulled in. Checked under the bonnet and under the car. Went to pull off and then noticed a slight bang and I stopped immediately. Had 2 kids in the car so wasnt going to risk it.

According to the mechanic on his first look he said it may have been caused when the clutch was replaced - if it was replaced. I bought the car 2nd hand. I can tell you the car would not drive, and would only go into 1st gear by force.

You're just going to have to see what your mechanic says. I don't see how a clutch replacement would have any impact on this failure. But that's besides the point. The problem is that lots of things could have gone wrong with this failure, and there could be a decent amount of labour involved which makes it very hard for us to guess. Your best bet is to report back here with what your mechanic says.

A clutch replacement would involve removing the Gearbox Mount. If this wasn't tightened properly when reattached.....there's your problem.

From what the mechanic said initially, he suspected either it wasn't tightened properly or the bolt sheered. Haven't heard from him yet. Not sure that's a good or bad sign.
