Just wondering if anyone has any theories on what the Russians might be doing up in the North Atlantic. They always seem to start manovers when theres a bit of a world chrisis. The british have sent several ships up there.

Testing air force intercept response times during times when a countries forces might be otherwise under pressure, in this case due to helping manage the Covid pandemic.

They fly along and dip into airspace to provoke an intercept and the see how long it takes to be intercepted, the number and type of interceptor aircraft, how far they escort them, see what tactics they use, behaviour etc etc. Fairly routine stuff tbh, always going on.

There were good stories of how a Tu95 would be intercepted by the RAF who would hold playboy magazines etc up to the glass and in response the Tu95 crew would extend and retract the refuelling probe!

I do not know what you mean by "theres a bit of a world chrisis".

But OK lets go with a quite plausible theory which took up about 2 minutes of using google and reading. It appears that you do have your facts a little bit mixed as according to The Guardian: 7 Russian ships were enroute home from aborted excercise.
That 7 Russian warships exercise was response to last minute aborted nato excercise in Norway involving 14,000 troops from nine countries.
