    Hi all

Does anybody know a good supplier of rough sawn beech, Ash, oak etc ?

Appears to be hard to find in Ireland at rates that are reasonable.

Is rough sawn much cheaper than planed timber in this country?

    Thanks

You'll find a lot of suppliers tend to deal with commercial customers only for rough sawn hardwood so they aren't necessarily advertising it up front but will be perfectly happy to help if asked.

Here are some options if you're on the mid-east coast:
    • Wood Industries (http://www.woodindustries.ie/) in Rathdrum supply a narrow range (but always stocked) of oak, mahogany and teak - both rough sawn and PAO. In stock they usually have up to 9" boards. Wood Industries are a general builders suppliers too so they stock hardware, finishes, glues, framing timber, sheet goods etc too. They're really sound to deal with.
    • Kiln Dried Hardwoods (http://kilndriedtimbersuppliers.com/index.htm) in Kilruddery sell direct to punters but prices can be quite high if buying in small quantities. That said the wood is usually very good quality, I've bought turning blanks and rough sawn beech there in the past. Nice guys to deal with too.
    • Kelly's Barna (https://kellybarna.ie/) in Glenealy will sell direct to punters too but only on Saturday mornings (for boards and off cuts off the mill). I've bought some beech and cherry boards there in the past - it's very informal so you'll need to go in with a good idea of what you're after but also prepared to adapt based on what they've got as it's generally leftovers from their commercial use. As with KDH it's usually good stuff but much cheaper as a result of being commercial offcuts, random sized slabs etc. I haven't dropped in there in a couple of years though.

Sawn is a huge amount cheaper if you have the machinery to do it yourself.
Brooks as mentioned do have good stock, but go and select it yourself. Quality isn't always there.
If you are buying a lot Murdocks in Newry would be one of the biggest suppliers and carry generally good quality.

Rough sawn timber will always be cheaper, but you need to consider that you will generally buy 20% more timber by volume, than your cutting list states you need

McMahons would also have rough-sawn, and Quinns. I've used Quinns a few times, never had a problem with them though they don't carry much that you'd call exotic - american black walnut and sapele would be their fanciest. McMahons also doesn't carry much that's esoteric but they do have a few things like hard maple that quinns doesn't carry much of.
The only place I know of that carries esoteric stuff (like natural slabs and the like) would be the Carpentry Store out in Naas.

Cheers. It is quite irritating that prices are never published!
