Underwater insect identification

These insects were in a pond crawling around underwater like hermit crabs would with the long stick like object on their backs. They'd attempt to make it to the top and then just drift back to the bottom. Any ideas?

It's a tusk hermit crab

This was definitely an insect head, nearly looked like a wasps head. Don't think the tusk hermit crab pics look like it from Google anyways. The thing on their back looked like birch tree fruit.

Whoop so what do I win!! Haha there is a great book the Collins irish wildlife book, if you like bug and bird spotting.. Just handy to know.. We can across this diving beetle in the woods had never seen the likes of it before..
