Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

2009 VW Passat Steering Lock Fault

The mother's Passat broke down this evening. 2009 2.0tdi bluemotion with 213k miles on it. She was driving along and a flashing steering wheel light came up on the dash with a 'Steering Column Lock, visit workshop' message. She said the car lost power and stalled. Was dangerous but she pulled in turned the car off and it restarted fine and got her home. The error message now appears intermittently when trying to start the car.

An internet search has revealed that the steering angle sensor is a common failure on these cars and gives similar symptoms. Will be dropping the car to a local independent garage tomorrow. I see online spurious sensors are approx €120. What sort of labour is involved? Anyone here had similar work done and if yes at what price? TIA

I'd say it's more likely the ESCL than the steering angle sensor. These are very common to give trouble. Cannot recall the price but not particularly cheap, the job isn't too labour intensive but the new part does need to be coded so probably not a DIY effort.

ESCL? Yes if it needs to be coded to the key we will leave the garage at it. Hopefully won't be too costly. Car is going great other than that. Well besides the sh*try electronic handbrake that works only on the button and won't auto release.
