    If underground it's more likely to get water ingress and perhaps break.

    That is a result of bad installation and maintenance practices.
    I can say though that, most auto gates are manufactured in Italy which has a Mediterranean climate, our own climate is a little more damp ;) .



    OP underground motors are best from an aesthetic point of view.
