Dear god...I watched the whole thing on Netflix (US) yesterday - in my defense I'm stuck in a hotel on the side of a mountain with absolutely nothing else to do, but I couldn't stop watching. I thought it was fantastic, excellent artwork, direction, story and the soundtrack was stunning. Looking back I can see why some folks would have issue with the pacing if you watched it piecemeal but it absolutely works in a marathon. It's now up there with Claymore and Darker than Black for me,

The Titans are one of the most disturbing enemies Ive seen in any series in a long time, theres something really off putting about them...

I agree. They make me feel a little bit sick.

Started Attack on Titan and loving it. I watched the first episode when it first came out and have been putting off the show till a time when I could sit down and gorge on it. Watched the first 10 episodes over the past few days and I can't recall the last time that an anime hooked me so quickly.

The storytelling is top notch and it manages to be suite emotional and moving, far more often than many more respected and lauded dramas manage. There's a sense of urgency to each episode but the writers know when to slow down and take a breather. The way in which the relationship between the characters and their past is woven into the mayhem creates genuine warmth for them and allows the writers to explore a number of interesting and topical themes and issues. It's a rather brave and adult show and that it doesn't pander to genre expectations is a breath of fresh air.

All that said there are some issues with the pacing. The training episode seemed to hint at a struggle we never saw, talk of cadets dieing and the strain they were under but we never saw this or the affect it had on the others. It felt like a missed opportunity. The training episode did remind me quite a lot of Starship Troopers. Similarly the show does like to pad out rid idea with lots of recycled material and long scenes where the characters spend an age discussing not a whole lot. Still, they're minor complaints which don't take a lot away from the show. It's one of those rare adult anime shows that's more concerned with philosophising than it is with cheap gore or titillation.

There's a really good PBS Idea Channel episode on whether or not the Titans are evil:

I didn't spot that there was a dedicated discussion topic for this, I already dropped some thoughts in another thread.

Attack on Titan is the first anime I've watched in about 5 years, and it seemed like a good thing to come back on, since it's been the talk of the internet for ages.

After watching it through, I feel very conflicted on it, I liked it overall, but definitely it had good and bad elements:

Bad: Terrible and boring characters, muddling plot, second half of the series was worse than the first, very blatant switches to still images to save animation budget, the very few plot-twists there were were presented badly and stopping at episode 25 practically gave me plot whiplash.

Good: Really interesting world, very compelling world mystery, excellent designs both in the titans and the weapons used to fight them, amazing action set-pieces, and best opening sequence of maybe any anime ever.

I would like to give special shout-outs to the first
    Titan versus Titan
fight in the forest, which might be the first battle in anime history I've seen where nobody talks, nobody shouts out attack names, and there are no bystanders who go "OH MY GOD, DID YOU SEE THAT ATTACK! WE ARE VERY SURPRISED BY THE POWER LEVEL OF IT!". It managed to be really subdued and epic at the same time. That's not easy.

I'm sure everyone's seen this as well, but if you haven't, it's pretty great (spoilers for like the first 6 eps only)

If you ever liked any anime previously you'll love AoT, great for introducing people to it aswell.

Just be aware that if you're watching it on Crunchyroll, due to licensing restrictions, episodes 14-25 are unavailable until December.

I see Manga have done a "great" job with the UK/IRE releases of this. Barebones dvd and barebones bluray or the Collectors Edition bluray which comes with all the extras, that are on the normal discs and in HD in AUS and US, on an extra dvd.

They have also mangled the subtitles with portions of episodes dubtitled.
    During the part where
Mikasa is trying to reason with Titan Eren
during episode 12, the UK subs are
    Snap out of it!
. The subtitles for the AUS version for the same line is
    I'm Mikasa!
    Part of your family!

Can Manga actually get a release that they author the disc themselves right? Makes it even worse when it's arguably their biggest release of the year.

Glad I got the US collectors editions instead of waiting for the domestic release like I usually would.

I seem to be the only one here to have caught Aot when it was on Youtube back in April. Awesome show. A bit slow in places and the cliffhanger was basically to keep people interested for season 2 but still an awesome show. Easily the best I've seen in a long time, and easily the best soundtrack I've heard in a long time. Prefer the sub over the dub though mainly because they (funimation I think) changed Eren's roar which was really stupid.

I don't know what the hoops with big monster killing them. The monster are too dumb. Why they can't kill those killers? LOL.

Oh man, I know it's pretty much the case for all English dubs but the Attack on Titan dub was terrible... really terrible. Name changes and sound effects alterations for no reason plus the pretty bad voice acting.

i love Shingeki no kyojin(Attack on titan) way too much! I don't know, when i watch it the show gives me a different kind of chilling! I've watched all 25 episodes and eagerly waiting for next season. i kind of love all the characters here specially Mikasa, Eren and not to mention our favorite Levi! XD I've read SNK manga upto 47 chapters, actually i prefer watching it rather than reading manga! maybe it's because i'm not used to read manga! :)

For those interested, it seems there's gonna be a live action movie made now.
Looks decent to be honest, but it'll probably be destroyed when its dubbed.

Nice, 3DS game based on the anime coming aswell:

I'm loving the anime - and I'm trying to avoid Manga spoilers so I appreciate the tags.

Aside from the action and the personal interactions I really enjoy the 'politics' in the show. I'm sure the Manga may expand on it further but small things like
the inferiority complex the Military Police Commander (Nile Doc?) seems to have against the Scouts - effectively knowing that he has no idea what to do during the final act and relying on Commander Erwin; whilst Erwin and Dot Pixis; from their brief meeting; appear to see one another as equals rather than rivals.

In addition to that I'm very much looking forward to
who the Colossal and Armoured Titans are. I have my suspicions about who the Armoured Titan is though I'm at a loss as to who the big guy is.

How long must I wait for my anime satisfaction? :pac:

I read the manga rather than wait for series 2 of the anime for precisely this reason. I didn't want it spoiled.

After reading it it, I can say I don't think I would have cared if it was spoiled. The manga is just as bad at the anime at trying to reveal plot twists in a dramatic way.

I spoiled it for myself and I honestly don't know what their identities are supposed to mean, maybe I missed something watching it...

    You didn't miss anything.

AOT is just bad at plot reveals and developing characters.

"Hey can you pop to the shop and buy a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs, a litre of milk and I am the armoured titan"

My opinion on it hasn't really changed from watching the anime way back when: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=90294275&postcount=61

Only thing I'll say is that the manga is objectively worse than the anime, since missing out on fluidly animated action scenes is one of the big pluses of the series.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,964 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

    Future spoilers:
Lol, its just like you say though, by the way x and y in the background were the Colossal and Armoured Titans all this time! Errrr... what?

Especially the Colossal guy who spent the entire series being a coward in fear of his life

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,239 ✭✭✭UberPrinny_Baal

^I'd edit your un-spoilered comment to be less specific, I'm not quoting it to make that easier for yourself. I was just complaining it was badly revealed, not that who it was in of itself was personally unsatisfying to me.
Which it was; but the fact it's not prominent character is in itself a minor spoiler.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,964 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

Edited now anyway. I am dying to know what the...
Titans buried in the walls were all about? Is there a good English summary of whats going on anywhere?

    It's kinda stupid that
other creatures can turn into titans, like the dog becoming a titan and just wanting to get back inside the wall is daft

MOD NOTE: JJayoo I've edited your post to make that a spoiler. I'm not sure how 'big' a spoiler or not it is but I've only seen the TV series and wasn't aware of that so adding the spoiler tags just in case.

I'm a bit late to the party, Started watching this on Friday. Up to episode 19 now.

Found it very slow in the middle but picking up now again, its excellent.

Great to have another anime series to binge on. But will probably have it finished by tomorrow morning.

Just finished it on Netflix, really enjoyed it even though I'm not a huge anime/manga fan

Does the manga follow the TV show? If I want to continue the story where should I start?

Yes it does. I think the series ends around chapter 32. A second season is apparently in production for next year and the Junior High spin off is getting an animated version in October.
