Just thought I would start this thread so people can post up recommendations of Yoga classes in Dublin that they know of/attend and what type of yoga they offer.

Previously I have done vinyasa flow yoga and wouldnt mind trying out a more relaxed type of yoga.

I do shadow yoga which is a flowing style that borrows from martial arts and other forms. Its a strong style and has three forms that you practice before settling into the asanas. Its sometimes quite tough.

I really enjoy it even though I only do it once a week for a good stretch!

Yeah when I started doing Yoga back in the Yoga Shala in Galway I found it moved quite fast and was quite a workout, but yeah it really is good to stretch out the muscles.

I did beginner classes (twice) in Leixlip and being beginner, I have found it excellent, well paced and adequately demanding. I can only highly recommend.

Great to see there's a yoga forum, I look forward to following it.

Here's my $0.02 regarding Dublin yoga classes I've attended:

The Elbow Room in Stoneybatter: I took a couple of drop in hatha classes there, the venue is gorgeous. I took two Sunday 'karma yoga' sessions, one very dynamic and a bit too tough for me, another more gentle, flowing class. They were great value, they don't seem to be on at the moment, but they have plenty more during the week.

Tara Wellbeing studio on Meath St, Dublin 8: this is the one I go to regularly for hatha yoga classes. They're usually pretty energetic and I think there's always a great atmosphere in the class because it's so friendly and everyone enjoys it. Classes are small so the instructor can keep an eye on everyone's form.

I hear very good things about Yoga Dublin in Ranelagh from friends, but I haven't been there yet.

I do Bikram yoga in Harolds Cross. I find it great. My background would be in soccer and endurance sports - cycling and running and this yoga provides a great challenge. Every single class is tough. The only downside is that it's bloody expensive though.

What is the cost? how often would you need to be attending, I attend night classes and would like to fit something else in on my evenings off
    Thanks

"Sunrise Yoga" in Dún laoghaire do classes for men, a lot of guys seem to ask about male only classes, so just thought I'd add that:)

loveacca: it depends. I think it's anything from 10-20 per class but if you get a term rate or a class pass obviously it's far cheaper. As for how often one should practice, that's up to you. I think a lot of people take a weekly class and then some (including me) supplement that with home practice.

I've been to Yoga Dublin and Sunrise Yoga, and really like both. Sunrise has a lovely, relaxing atmosphere, which I love! I've also been to Samadhi in Temple Bar and the Yoga Rooms on the Merrion rd, and liked both.

Ivy Tilsey, I haven't been to either of the two places you recommend: I must try them when I get time! I've heard great things about the elbow room.

Please note, text speak is not allowed in this forum!

I know the Iyengar Yoga Centre is meant to be very good, but they only teach the one style. I don't know of any other places, I'm afraid.

We are regulars in Yoga Dublin, mostly in Ranelagh as our favourite teachers are scheduled there, but also in Dundrum. Ranelagh is a nice loft studio and Dundrum is all new with great facilities (showers, changing rooms, yoga shop). Great choice of classes and we like how they react to the downturn by providing cheaper classes, class passes, memberships etc. Monthly e79 membership is great value, we like to take 2-4 classes a week and it would not be possible otherwise.

I go to a Hatha Flow class in the Dublin Holistic Centre - the person I go, also works in Kildare as well. Her schedule is on her website http://www.yogaireland.ie/book.html. I initially started yoga due to having had back sciatica earlier in the year, and was determined not to experience that type of pain if I could help it. Little did I realise just how much I love this class.

Anyone know of a good place for Yoga in Dublin 12 for a complete n00b (read: overweight, inflexible 5'2 female :pac:)? :P What type of Yoga would ye recommend?

Edit: Just noticed a Yoga class in the Greenhills Community Centre on Tuesday nights, anyone know anything about this class? Good? Bad? Is one class a week enough (if I were to practise myself at home obviously)?

Sorry about all the questions, I did warn ye I'm a total noob :P

Great thread! Where would I be without boards.ie ?!!

Anyway, looking to take the plunge and give yoga a go. Wife's cousin convinced me over Christmas.

    1. I'm 50, male & have very mild arthritis. I'm reasonably active (cycle & walk a bit & work on my feet) and not over-weight. What type of yoga should I be considering?

    2. I don't really want to travel far to class as that would take the good out of it. I'm living in Dublin 14 (between UCD & the Goat Pub) so the class in Dundrum might be of interest. Anything nearer?

    Would appreciate any feedback.

    Thanks

    D.

Very belated response. I'm so sorry :o

If you have arthritis, you may need to discuss your intention of taking up yoga with your doctor or specialist. Since you have a medical condition, I couldn't advise on any one style of yoga, I'm afraid.

My friend goes to that studio in Dundrum and really likes it. There's nothing closer that I know of.

Do please consult your doctor first and happy bending!

The Elbow Room in Stoneybatter has an excellent reputation. There's also the Iyengar Yoga Studio on NCR in Phibsboro. I don't know of anywhere else on the northside. Step aerobics I wouldn't know about, I'm afraid. :)

This place just opened up close to where I live, havent had a chance to check it out yet but from walking past they seem to have a very large spacious studio and the intro rates seem reasonable, but regular drop in classes are quite pricey :/

Wow, those prices are just  Over €100 for a month's membership?! Mental, imho.

A drop in one hour class is going to be 25 euro

I started classes recently in rathmines, there are some good intro offers for unlimited classes and different classes each evening. http://www.yogarathmines.com/

There are a good list of Yoga teachers in Dublin (and all over Ireland) at
    http://www.burrenyoga.com/tchv

Just enter your County (and area if you prefer) and it will list many of the yoga teachers in that County.

    I can personally recommend
The Yoga Room (opposite St Vincents hospital)
    Samadhi Yoga Studios (Temple Bar)

And Colm's Yoga Dublin Studios (in Rathmines and also Dundrum) have many good teachers.

There are many more good yoga teachers in Dublin that i have not mentioned.

It is also well worth considering what type of yoga you would like to sign up for. There is a wide range of 'types of yoga' which range from very gentle and meditative, to very strong and physically dynamic.

Ranging from Satyananda yoga, Iyengar, Ashtanga, Kundalini, Vinyasa flow, Hatha yoga, Yin yoga, Anusara yoga.... and many more.

To get a good overview of the different types there is an article which i wrote for a magazine last year at
    http://www.burrenyoga.com/about-yoga/different-types-of-yoga.html

I wish you well with your practice.

    Best Wishes,
    Dave

    Hi,
The best form of yoga for anyone with injuries or arthritis is Satyananda yoga. I believe that it is worth traveling a little distance to find a good teacher, especially for a practice like yoga which can truly transform your whole life.

There is a good teacher Grainne McLaughlin ( i believe now living in Monkstown) 086 8518321

    or Caoimhe at (086) 339 7671

    Best Wishes,
    Dave
