What makes somebody a refugee?

I've seen two stories on refugees on RTE news over the weekend that both included interviews with South African asylum seekers here. I find it odd that people from a stable democratic country with a higher GDP than our own would meet the criteria to be accepted as such.

There were Romanians arriving in Ireland claiming political asylum right up until Romania's entry into the EU... makes no sense to me either.

GDP per capita is a better gauge than just looking at the GDP figure.

Neither figure has anything though to do with the criteria when claiming for political asylum.

a stable democratic country with a higher GDP than our own

    South Africa
GDP per capita 5,273.59 USD (2016)
UNODC murder rates (per 100,000 inhabitants) 34.27
Rape at the national level, number of police-recorded offenses 132.4

    Ireland
GDP per capita 61,606.48 USD (2016)
UNODC murder rates (per 100,000 inhabitants) 0.64
Rape at the national level, number of police-recorded offenses 10.7

A twelfth of the GDP, 12 times the rape rate and 54 times the murder rate.

And eh, "With less than a year before his term were to expire, Zuma resigned on 14 February 2018 following the demands of the ANC that Zuma should resign, or risk facing a successful vote of no confidence in the National Assembly." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_South_Africa

We have a common travel area with UK so presumably same criteria applies here...

    https://www.asylumaid.org.uk/the-asylum-process-made-simple/

UK Border Agency case owners must consider the applicant’s account of persecution and any supporting evidence they offer in order to decide whether it meets the criteria for granting asylum. For example, under the 1951 Geneva Convention, it is necessary to show that

    - the harmful treatment the person fears amounts to ‘persecution’
    - the person’s fear of such persecution is ‘well-founded’
    - the persecution is for one of the five reasons specified in the Convention (race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership of a particular social group)
    - the person could not find protection in another part of their country
    and
    - the person would be at risk of experiencing such persecution in the future if they were returned

So being poor, starving or living in a crime ridden s******e doesn't count.

Most of the chancers from Calais that Zappone is bringing in aren't anyway.

All you have to do is get to Ireland and claim it. Then the taxpayer takes over. Even when you lose your claim you will still not sent be back. What's to lose.

And which would you say is most likely for south africans?
Legally only political is recognised under asylum laws afaik and that would include armed conflict targeting specific groups.

A lot of asylum seekers over here 'claim' to be from a war-torn country. Cannot go back because of the fear of death.

I say 'claim' because it's well known to the the garda immigration bureau that a number of them work the system. For example a lot saying they were from Somalia when they were from in fact Tanzania and due to the nature of coming from a war-torn country you lose your passport conveniently in the process.

Garda know the score but you have to offer asylum so proving things is hard even when they know someone is lying to their face.

Well, for a start, asylum seekers are not refugees. Most people use the terms as interchangeable. An asylum seeker is someone who has applied for refugee status and their claim hasn't been determined. The clue is in the word "seeker."

Asylum systems in Western countries are routinely abused by welfare tourists because they know white people have been conditioned into being pussies and are easily manipulated.
