Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Always thought he was as loveable as was possible.

From the Slane pictures to his persona!

    I like him anyway

    John Hume.

I think he was Ireland's best politician since O'Connell but I don't think he was universally loved, he had plenty of critics over the years.

In the early '90s, the Sunday Independent used to have a hit piece on him every week. Really vicious stuff. A lot of those columnists haven't gone away either.

Id listen to Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh all day, he could talk about the life cycle of the earthworm and I would still enjoy his use of language and turn of phrase. Nearest living thing to a hemingway or shaw.

Anyone well known enough to be universally well known will tend to have traits or opinions that wont be popular with everyone such as micheal o'leary or christy moore.
Id add Denis Irwin to the mix though only soccer fans would love him but hes unassuming enough that people wont dislike at least.

    Why?

A mellifluous hypocrite who extols terrorists. A sickening creep.

The amount of likes for the Paul McGrath suggestion and the absence so far of anyone taking issue with it, says everything. As near to universally loved as you are going to get.

Ian Paisley, maybe Bertie Ahern ?

Perhaps to some of his political views but as a person, a leader, he was loved and admired.

10 years ago was voted greatest person in Irish History.

Are there any Irish people who are loved by everybody, or practically everybody anyway?
The only 1 I can think of to even come close to it is Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh.
    Any others?

Yet, me obviously, where have you been onthis planet. Everybody loves me

He got coy about it, didn't want to risk it just in case.

Hopefully it is not until next week, fingers crossed. I cannot wait to meet his brother.

Well the IRA completely changed their mind on him. Also if we are going to include loyalist die hards then no one will ever qualify.

Two pals of mine was taught by him in O'Connell Schools many years ago - and they always maintained that he was a nasty teacher (in fairness, they were diehard soccer players and, according to them, MO'M absolutely hated soccer!)

He's a huge greyhound fan too and I don't have much time for the greyhound racing/coursing fraternity.

not the first time ive heard that about him

Not a golf fan. What is it apart from being a grumpy pr1ck but considering what he has been to is understandable.

Definitely not Christy Moore. Great singer but wouldn’t want to be within 10 miles of him.
