This is not supported on my Logitech Z5500s so I get stereo. Dolby Digital Plus is backward compatible with Dolby Digital but will not work over optical, HDMI only.
But for the vast majority of users, with a regular TV & a HDMI connection, this isn't an issue.

It is if they want surround sound, most TV's don't passthrough Dolby either, same situation

Would a chromecast be able to cast streams that I'd be watching on my laptop using chrome to the tv ? Debating whether to get rid of some of the sports packages as they're not worth it anymore

Chomecast doesn't have apps. You cast apps/websites to it.

I don't think it's possible to cast VM app, well I couldn't get to work anyway. Not sure about rte player but I'd be doubtful.

I'd say you could possibly mirror both if you signed into them using the chrome browser and bypass the apps.

It is, but it's ropey as hell. I'd guess it's worked about 1 time in 5 that I've tried

A lot of channels don't allow it too
