Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Is the falcon a captive bird or had we a rare vagrant?

Another one from the Dodder taken by a friend. This time foxy is stalking a heron instead of a Little Egret. The heron doesn't seem too concerned.

fantastic shots - what were the circumstances? did you come across it by chance and had the camera with you, or was it somewhere you knew you might expect a kill?

Literally I saw it from my window and ran downstairs, so by chance but I know they are in the area.

I am told this is a male... what's the opinion of the experts?

Sparrowhawk is definitely a female. A male wouldn't be able to handle a pigeon, something around Blackbird size is the biggest thing he would attempt.....

My thoughts too, but I am getting such strong arguments from a few very good birders that make me wonder, basically on the back of the ruffous feathers.

It's without doubt a female. I can't see anything that would lead someone to think it's a male.

Just on the sparrowhawk front, my sister took these in her garden about 2 months back - pretty sure it was a female

We also saw what we think was a male in the area but he was a lot smaller and was more of a greyish colour

@Srameen and @bkrangle I would agree with both of you...for me my sparrowhawk and bkrangle are both females due to size and colour.

Friends I checked with are 50-50, however 2 or 3 of them are top birders in the country and are of the opinion that at least mine is an immature male.

I don't know now...for me males they are not only smaller but also have more like a "chick" face
