Painting over door and press hinges

Just wondering is this the norm for professional painters to paint over door and press hinges these days? Also painting over wallpaper? Paint is already starting to flake on the hinges and they were brand new inside doors. If you don’t make it clear to a painter at the start that you don’t want the hinges painted do they just paint it anyway? I see a lot of houses for sale that have recently been painted with the door and hinges painted also.

Depends on the hinges i suppose.

Mine are new and don't sit flush with the door. They're nice chrome hinges and 'butt out' a bit from the door when it's closed. I'd be annoyed if they were painted over, and I'd make sure they weren't painted.

If they're more subtle hinges that are hidden away when the door is closed, then I probably wouldn't care.

I don’t think it’s the norm for a proper painter. It’s probably more common for lads who are “handy with a brush” but call themselves painters.

No, hinges should not be painted

I think, it depends on a master. I believe, it's not ok to paint hinges.

Thats what I was thinking. And like if you paint on metal without first using a specialist metal primer then it should be no surprise when it begins to flake not long after. Sounds like the OP definitely had someone 'handy with a brush' as you say.

The problem with those lads is they genuinely think they’re proper painters, and it’s hard to tell that they’re not sometimes until they’re finished and a balls made of a job. Coz they often charge like proper painters

No they should not paint over hinges or wallpaper.

As a generalisation and from experience in working with and dealing people in construction in both a personal and professional capacity, people will always choose the path of least resistance especially when dealing with lads in the trade or on building sites. 90% of the work involved in painting is prep work, with only 10% being actual painting. Taking off doors, removing hinges, stripping wall paper is all time consuming. Lads want to get in and out as quickly as possible which is why you can assume nothing and make sure to confirm everything.
