Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Looking for a Foucault Essay

I read an essay/article that was, I'm pretty sure, by Foucault, probably an excerpt from something a few years ago. It basically covered his concept of art, and why certain forms of media/entertainment are art and others aren't - e.g. pornography/painting.

I can't find it again, and I want to use it to write something of my own, so if anyone knows of it, or even something along those lines, let me know, cheers!

Manet and the Object of Painting maybe? I've never read that piece, but it doesn't "sound" like him to me (I mean, it wouldn't make sense if he made distinctions between objects as either are or aren't art). You could always read the Order of Things too, the preface and the introduction would be worth looking at.

Hmm, good point, it may have been someone else drawing on Foucault, or just a case of my memory being a bit hazy. It was 5 years ago so I'm sure I've forgotten more than I remember of it :pac:

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll have a look at those.

Well, yes, The Order of Things includes reflections on representation on art, famously the chapters discussing Velasquez's 'Las Meninas' painting (compiled into a single chapter in 'A Critical Introduction to Aesthetics' edited by Clive Cazeaux). But I don't think that's what you're looking for.

    Not sure,
    what about this one:

Foucault, M. (1961) Madness and Civilization, Tavistock Publications, London.
