I see Andy McEntee has criticised other counties for training during lockdown but were Meath not known to be training in Gormanstown during last Summer’s lockdown?

Yep. And on the Milltown road pitch in Ashbourne. Full contact sessions. Very hypocritical of him if he is now complaining.

Why were Meath training there? Seems a bit random.

A quiet location I'd assume. I actually thought it was the Ashbourne seniors at first until I saw McEntee and a few others I recognised.

Even after the lockdown, when club action was allowed again Meath were doing 1/2 sessions a week despite that period being "reserved" for the club game and county training barred. I think after a protest from the clubs it was stopped. Seems a bit hypocritical of McEntee.

Funny that the most prominent example of starting early to get a headstart was Wexford hurlers, who ended up having a disastrous championship.

Seen them in Ashbourne myself and it seemed to be all the south Meath lads. Ratoath Dunboyne etc. I'd say the panel was split into groups to train, when I seen it it was before the pitches had opened back up at all. It wasn't that quiet a location. I was doing a bootcamp with about 25 others, there was at least two other teams in doing small sessions too :D

Cavan King mentioning Gormanston reminds me of my favourite lockdown moan. One of our club hurlers was complaining on Facebook about around six other teams using Gormanston for illegal training. A mate of mine that is with one of the other clubs was telling me when I mentioned it the complaint came from some of our hurlers arriving over to do their own session and having no room to do it!! As an aside to that since the summer the management company in Gormanston has put big fences up around the pitches now, all non sanctioned use of the place is over.

We were in the same bootcamp so :pac: I meant quiet location in general. Which is usually would be tbf apart from a few joggers around the perimeter

Yeah, the lads who were training at the bottom near us were from Ballyboughal. The lads that went up the top to the corner above us was the Ashbourne junior team.

I didnt actually have a problem with it. Just a bit mad for Andy to be giving out now when he was at it himself last year.

Good to see Bernard Flynn and Geraghty getting involved with the minors. It seems to be a good backroom team.

Anyone know how long they are in for? Surely more than 1 year?

Great news for all, I imagine the roles are theirs for however long the want but then again this is Meath - they could be out again this time next year

John McCarthy is over the minors.

Flynn and Geraghty will be with the U20s

GGs recovery must be going well if he's able to commit to the u20s. Though who knows when that championship will be taking place.

You'd imagine he'd have to have really put his name strongly forward for the role because logic would say "Graham, you need a break for a while. Take a breather and come back to us in 2022 and the role is yours"

I don't want this to sound like I'm being down on the appointment because I'm excited by it, just wondering what Bernie Flynn's managerial CV is like? I know he managed Mullingar Shamrocks at one stage anyway but out from that I'm not sure?

For those of a certain vintage who would like to be tortured from Dublin. Or those that would like cheering up from Meath. Or even those who just want to hear about the take of those involved in a great four game saga.

Dublin v Meath 'The Royal Battle' programme about the four in a row Preliminary Round, back in 1991.

Interestingly Vinnie Murphy still seemed very sore about Dave Foran being played at full forward in the first game. Said he should have been given 20mins by Paddy Cullen at Full Forward instead of the corner. As a young fella he said it drained his confidence a bit.

    Part 1

    Part 2

    Part 3

    Part 4

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Have this on dvd. These days won't ever be seen again. Glad I got to witness them because my kids sure as hell won't or anything remotely similar.

^^^Was 18 at the time and was at all those games, big bunch of us on a bus from Athboy up to the big smoke for the game and pints, would stop in Jack Quinns on the way back.

Two great teams in fairness, you're right RoyalCelt our kids will never witness great times like this for the foreseeable, Leinster matches against the Dubs were magic back then and was to the benefit of Gaelic football in general.

Your goalkeeping woes may be solved lads....

Corcoran has left Dundalk and I’m hearing he’s been called in by Meath.

The last keeper that inspired me was Brendan murphy, he came from a soccer background too. Here's hoping!

Think he's played outfield for Drumbaragh when he's played for them. No reason why he couldn't play between the sticks for Meath. Possibly our best ever keeper, Cormac O'Sullivan, played outfield for Pat's if I remember correctly.

^^^Mickey Mc Quillen played outfield as well for his club, can't remember off hand who though, St.Michaels??

Looked it up MIckey Mc Quillen also played for St.Pat's

Sully played midfield and went into full forward in latter years. Mickey McQuillan was the same, played mostly outfield. I don't think its too uncommon for county keepers tbh

Jimmy does play out the field for Drumbaragh alright and has run up some big scores. I’d imagine he is in with Meath as a ‘keeper though.

The man who many tip to pick up the goalkeeper All Star this year, Raymond Galligan, still plays full forward for his club and didn’t play in goals for Cavan until a 2015 first round Ulster tie vs Monaghan. He’s 33 now so would have been 27/28 by the time he played in goals!

He’s from the same club as Terry Hyland, then Cavan manager, and Terry brought him in purely because of his place kicking ability.

Going completely off Meath for a second here, didn't Monaghan play one of their outfield players in goal in an Ulster Championship match in the last number of years?

David Gallagher would have been another one to play out the field for his club and in goal for Meath.

Yes they did. Can't remember who it was, but it was a late change and RTE were losing their minds over it.

It was Darren Hughes in 2010

Nick Weir will continue as senior hurling manager for 2021
David O’Reilly will also continue in his coaching role.
Nick has added Meath legend Steven Clynch, Tipperary men Johnny Enright & Timmy Hammersley to his coaching team

As an aside in the goalkeeper/outfield discussion it reminds me of an episode a few years ago showing the delightful fickleness of fans; towards the end of Mick O'Dowd's management one of the stock criticisms thrown at him was that his chosen keeper Paddy O'Rourke didn't play in goals for his club and our county keeper should always be focused on goalkeeping even at club level etc.

Yet fast forward a year and Andy McEntee was being hailed as a visionary genius for bringing Joe Sheridan in as a goalkeeper despite never playing there in any capacity before or since.

Am I going mad or was Barry Dardis played in goals at one stage 2 or 3 years ago too?

Little to be said about those appointments really. We achieved exactly as expected in 2020. God knows what sort of competitions will be played in 2021 but I just don't see any evidence of us making the step up. I may have read somewhere about the J McD now being 2 groups of 3, so maybe a miraculous draw with Kildare and Down could give us a chance to reach the final.

Yeah, Barry came into the squad as a keeper initially as far as I remember. I think the logic was his place kicking ability, which would also apply to Paddy O'Rourke!

Wasn't there a time Barry (and David Gallagher) carried a keepers and an outfielders no 16 jersey

Conor Martin was on the minor panel as an outfield player and was put back in goals when Kevin Jordan got injured during an Ulster minor league match. They'd Jordan and one other keeper on the panel at the time and Conor went back in goals from there.

Just hope it was more to do with the uncertainty about commencement dates for Championship '21 as opposed to anything to do with the inter-county setup.

I'd hazard a guess that it's even simpler than that and it's just the case that he hopes to make a career out of soccer. An expenses/part time contract at Wexford FC will still do far more for his soccer prospects than playing on the Meath team.

I'm generally not one for simplistic "X did something, why aren't we doing it too?!" comparisons, but I really have to wonder how is it that Louth can make €1.2 Million raffling 2 houses, but Meath's raffle of 3 houses made a relatively paltry €0.16 Million?

I'm genuinely curious what exactly happened that brought such an underwhelming return, not just looking for the usual "Useless county board!!1!" stuff.

I didn't put much pass on the Louth one but would the commission to clubs have made a difference with the Meath one? As well as that I did notice that I couldn't move on social media for ads for the Louth draw, maybe an element of it was the advertisement.

I know Louth badly need a new ground, but if they get sorted before we even get one new stand I'll be sick beyond belief.

I think the difference between the 2 was Meath just told clubs they had to sell tickets and that was that. The only time I heard something about the Meath draw was when it was launched and then when they deferred the draw due to poor sales.

Louth pushed it and advertised it. Every second ad on Facebook was a Louth draw ad. I dont remember seeing much ads, if any, for Meath.

Just seems to be down to marketing and getting sales in.

I'd actually go reverse on it and query how Louth county board made €1.2m raffling the two houses. Seems a ridiculously large figure. Works out that every single adult in the county spent €12 in the draw or something like that.

Roscommon made €900,000 from one house! Interestingly they give the break down of their spend etc in this article and I think Meath County Board had somewhere too. It would be interesting to see Louth's by comparison

Only watched the Bernard Flynn Laochra Gael tonight. It was really enjoyable. I hadn’t realised he retired young enough, he easily could’ve been around for 96 and 99 as well.

On another note looking at the footage of the Westmeath county finals does anyone know where they were played? I remember Meath playing Westmeath in a league match mid 90s in a similar looking ground but no amount of Googling will help me find it and it’s driving me mad!!

I'm hearing now Jimmy has a deal with Wexford that allows him to play with Meath. I heard it from a Drumbaragh man so would hope its reliable enough info.

Carlow or Longford in the Championship for Meath so a decent enough draw. I'd imagine it'll be Longford, although Carlow have Ger Brennan and a few involved so might improve.
