Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Irish water has cost 1.5bn so far from conservative estimates, €800m on foreign aid is 2bn saved.

Have you a way to meter the country for free?

Start a thread on dropping foreign aid if you like. In fact, why not ask Paul Murphy if he'll do it if elected and why he isn't championing it as a money saving measure now.

This not wanting to pay for essential services and feeling its your right to have them, yet having no problem wasting money on beer, fags and sky tv shows the lack of discipline in Irish culture. It reflects in anti social behavior too.

You know, you're right. I think we should all be fceked off to someplace way out in the countryside to have manners beat into us.

I do indeed. Take up Siemens offer to install the meters for free. That was easy.

I am showing a tremendous discipline, watching the thousands I pay per-month in tax being squandered on nonsense "debts", i.e. shoring up the German socialist system.

Whatever about Sky. If the irish decided not to smoke or drink, tax would plummet. .

    As would spending on healthcare.

What about increases in other areas? Do you think people will stop spending the money if they don't smoke or drink?

Was it free or were there other down the line costs?

What was the reason for Siemens being so charitable to the Irish government?

You just simply fail to acknowledge what I previously said in regards to... we already pay for it, three times already.

Do you drive a vehicle ? Do you even pay taxes ?. It's simply easy to explain it in lay-man's terms, but you do not understand basic layman's terms so I'll leave it there with you.

I'm sorry but this argument just doesn't make any sense.

The fact of the matter is that people who don't have access to water post the same taxes as people who do. Therefore the cost of providing water mains service is externalised onto the general taxpayer whether or not he gets water services or sewerage services.

With water charges the majority of funding for these services will still be from general taxation, with about a third of funding coming from charges.

The current system of funding clearly does not work and needs to be changed. That is why water charges are being brought in.

Of course the old "people have had enough" argument still holds. People have had enough. It's been a very hard adjustment that Ireland has gone through but that does not mean that water charges are not right or that we pay for water 3 times because we don't.

If people have had enough they should have a people have had enough protest.

Whatever about Sky. If the irish decided not to smoke or drink, tax would plummet. You do realise excise etc make up a huge percentage of the tax take. That why cigarettes aren't €20 a pack. Nothing to do with health, all about balancing the tax take.

Tax should be minimal, why should I support public state and dole free loaders ? They dont support me.

Pay your way for what you use, its the fairest system.

No car tax, pay at the pumps, the more miles you do the more tax you pay.

Small community schools with small budgets, with big input from parents.

No red tape for businesses etc. Make dole merchants do community service for their money.

Pay for the water you use with meters. etc, etc, etc.

common sense. Its called getting people to take personal responsibility.

The opposite of the socialist experiment.

So you want to get rid of a democratic society?

Not in the slightest, I'm all for democracy, I believe all who contribute to this country should be entitled to vote, as for the bludgers and wasters they can have a vote when they contribute instead of giving two fingers to the people who are paying their dole/soc.welfare/single parents and laughing at people who work for a living and whose taxes keep them in cheap/free housing, smuggled fags, sky TV and drink/drugs.:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

They wanted in on the latest scam. When IW is flogged off they'd probably quuadruple their "investment". Fish in a barrell, as always.

Good, people should pay their own healthcare costs, with insurance.

Not state run socialist healthcare schemes with third rate quality.

Why should my taxes pay for the medical care of the obese, smokers, boozers, druggies, drunks, old misers with big houses etc ?

Only children should get free healthcare.

What kind of a question is that? Are you Mick Noonan??

And they should have just f'ked Rosa Parks off the bus, executed the Guilford 4 and thrown away the key with Mandela.

    Typical HAIRYHOLE response.

    1. Rosa Parks was standing(sitting) for her rights. Are you black and being discriminated against?
    2. The Guildford 4 were INNOCENT, the muppets jailed during the week were GUILTY of Contempt having been ordered to behave otherwise.
    3. Don't besmirch the name of Mandela by attempting to associate his activities with your brainless activities and illegalities.

So if you lose your job due to your company closing etc you are happy to lose your vote?

The country needs to leave the EU asap.

This is what created much of the mess.

    Bling culture did not help.

    What sheer GENIUS!!!!
YOU MUPPET , if the health services didn't have to spend BILLIONS on the results of smoking/drinking we would have a proper health service, that's the MOST BRAINLESS argument I ever heard

Well in the absence of any other answer from the gallery with all the answers, one can only assume the one person that does answer knows what they are talking about, no? Or is it another one of the things we're supposed to just accept without explanation because its a dig at the government so it must be true?

This one is pretty brainless as well. Money is not the problem in healthcare here, the problem is union block-voting.

Nelson who backed a bombing campaign that killed innocents?? Sorry for putting him in the same category as water protestors.

And I am a huge Madiba fan. My point is that sometimes you have to go against authority to do what is right.

You want to kill yourself fine, just pay for your own healthcare.

The more tax govts get the more money they waste.

The big state creates poverty and creates a dependency culture, as well as an underclass, which is part of it.

No, no problem with that scenario , state payments for 2-3 years NOT FOR LIFE OR FOR 3-4 generations to allow scumbags abuse the system and laugh at and abuse the people who actually should make the country what it is , the taxpayers.
