Buried cables regulations

    Whats the regs on buried electrical cable?

    I've chased about 5 cm deep - and knackered so don't wanna have to go deeper if I don't have to

    Found some British regs but are they the same as Ireland

    Basically is it deep enough or will I need a conduit and should it be plastic or metal?

    There's a few

    Generally cables go horizontally or vertically to a switch etc

    And they should be at least 50mm back from the other side of a wall

    There's a few more but mostly you will stick to the standard runs above

    If youre dropping to a socket etc you only need plastic

    You actually don't want to go in to deep if it's a thin wall as you might be out too far towards the other side

    It should be in conduit and min 750mm.

    450mm for SWA buried in a domestic garden or driveway

    - 100mm sifted soil or sand
    - SWA
    - 150mm sifted soil or sand
    and then 450mm comprising:
    - Cable tile
    - Warning tape
    - Backfill

    So effectively you have to start by digging a trench of depth 700mm+cable diameter.

    But this isn't what the OP was about. :D

    Block is about 120mm, I'm probably more 40 mm than 50

    I think it's something like 1/3 of block thickness for vertical chase,
    so about 35mm.
    and half that for horizontal chase.

    522.6.4 :4th edition 2008 the distance measured horizontally between the wring and the reverse side of the wall is not less than 50 mm

    +all the stuff about horz and vertical distances

    500mm would be best


    cover with some gravel and then some yellow warning tape incase someone comes digging in years to come
