I'm trying to learn more about Timothy Fitzgerald who was born in 1886 in Kerry. He was not living with his family in 1911. His brother's obituary says he was living in Dublin in 1957. My mother (who never met him) told me he lived in Dublin and she thinks he might have been a guard. It's possible he is one of these two men in the 1911 census.

I have found one man who seems like a possibility for my Timothy Fitzgerald. This man married Charlotte Byrne in Dublin in 1915. They had at least four children including:
Catherine: "eldest daugther", married Garda Edward J Carr in 1938, may have had
    10 children.
      Laura:
born 1921, married Michael J Murphy in 1947 in Dublin, had 3 children, died in Hamburg NY in 1985.
      Maurice:
born in 1923, knocked down and killed in 1946, obituary mentions "brother, sisters".

This Timothy Fitzgerald was promoted from Sergeant in Division C to Station Sergeant in Division B in 1924. His son's obituary in 1946 says he was retired. This Timothy died September 1st 1960. He and his son Maurice are buried in Esker Cemetery in Lucan.

I know this Fitzgerald family lived at the following addresses:
1930: Conyngham Road, Islandbridge (not confirmed)
1938: 5 Holly Brook Villas (Clontarf?)
      1946: 106 Tyrconnell Road, Inchicore
      1960: 10 Moyle Place, Clondalkin

How can I prove this Timothy is (or is not) my Timothy? I'm not overly familiar with researching in Dublin or DMP records so I need help with what avenues I can explore (preferable free, my budget is €0 :(). Thank you!

There is a marriage announcement for the daughter of Timothy and Charlotte Fitzgerald, Catherine, to Edward Carr, Garda Siochana Irish Independent 3 Sep 1960, p1. The address is Hollybrook Villa, Naas Road, Inchicore [not the Clontarf Hollybrook].

Her brother Maurice died from injuries when his motor cycle was in a collision with a car driven by Lennox Conynham, a retired teaplanter from Ceylon [Irish Press, 15 Jul 1946, p5]

Jim Herlihy is a great source of information on RIC & DMP. See his list of publications at http://www.fourcourtspress.ie/product.php?intProductID=292; the RIC registers give date of birth, father's name, home address, and lists of postings.

There is a facebook page devoted to RIC & DMP at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/126602292427/

The Royal Irish Constabulary website is also helpful: http://www.royalirishconstabulary.com/index2.html

And some advice from Eneclann about researching RIC/DMP ancestors:

If you can find the church he was baptised in they should have his marriage details entered into his baptism record......

Other than that get the 2 marriages and see which if any have the same fathers details..

There was only one Timothy Fitzgerald on the 1939/40 Dublin Electoral Register; Timothy and Johanna Fitzgerald lived at 14 Bath Avenue Villas [see searchable database at http://www.dublinheritage.ie/electoral/index.php]

This guy was from Limerick according to his death notice and had a brother named Maurice which my Timothy did not.

I'll have to see if my library has these.

The very first link posted is from a library which was named after the first cousin once removed of my Timothy Fitzgerald! I love coincidences like that :)

    Thanks!

The marriage record in the GRO office will have his father's name and occupation, but not his birth place, just where he was living at the time of his marriage. [Dublin South, Oct-Dec 1915 Vol 2 p617]; the register will identify the church where he was married; if you can find the register of this church, that might give details of where he was baptised.

Hi. Did you find out more about Timothy FitzGerald since this post? My grandmother was Catherine Fitzgerald. She married Edward Carr who was a guard. He worked with her father as far as I know. I have a photo of Timothy and Charlottes wedding. I was trying to find out what year it was taken when I came across your post.

    Hello potential relative!

The only thing I have to add since my original post is that your Timothy was 73 when he died. This matches my Timothy perfectly.

Do you know anything else about Timothy? Was he from Kerry? Do you have more information which could help me prove a connection? Feel free to PM me if you wish.

My Timothy had 8 siblings. 7 of them immigrated to Buffalo NY (2 or 3 later returned to Ireland). Perhaps it is a simple coincidence but Buffalo is not far from Hamburg where your great-aunt Laura lived. I have extensive information on most of my Fitzgerald family (just Timothy and his brother John have alluded me) so any snippet of information could help.

If you are interested in learning more about Timothy and Charlotte then KildareFan's advice to locate their church marriage record would be a great first step.
