Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

This time of year we expect to see the greatest Arctic sea ice extent for the season. The exact date of the largest extent can range from any time in mid-February to late-March. This year is no different, after an apparent sea ice extent in mid-February, ice began to grow again in late February and has now reached 14,059,161 km2. Today's extent value is the 8th lowest on record (out of about 40 records). Will there be further gains as we go through the first half of March?

Meanwhile, in Antarctica there has been a huge increase in ice extent there, the ice extent reaches its minimum roughly around the same time as the Arctic reaches it's maximum. However, Antarctica reached it's minimum of 2.89m KM2 on February 21st roughly in line with the 1980s average ice minimum. Since then there has been almost 1 million square kilometres of ice added, extraordinary stuff!
