We should strive to move away from the ICU system and solely use FIDE ratings like in most countries.

They say that imitation is the sincerest for of flattery but really you should just get a life.

Why are you not happy that I am flattering you?

There should be 2 separate tournaments.

I think it's quite sad but it does give a good indication of what sort of person you are. Passive aggression isn't unusual in the chess world, people who would never offend anyone face to face turn from mice into lions once they have anonymity to protect themselves. Chess provides a good outlet for such people, they can be aggressive (or at least annoying) over the board or in blogs with little risk of getting a probably richly deserved smack in the gob.

I genuinely didn't mean to hurt your feelings. My username was a light-hearted joke. I thought you would enjoy it instead of being so outraged. But I'll change it if you like.

Thanks. I would like. Soda was a cat that I was very attached to and I am also a dog lover. Happy Christmas

Some strong players in the 50+/65+
Paul Wallace clear favorite for the 50+ and Anthony Doyle clear favorite for the 65+.
It will be interesting to see if Doyle is rusty after along layoff from over-the-board chess!

Indeed, so far as the Irish titles are concerned, but for the overall tournament winner, have you overlooked FM Robin Moss from England who is 2289 FIDE although his last rated/database game seems to be from about 2002?
He has also entered the Mulcahy Memorial.

Tony Doyle (whose 2210 FIDE will make him second seed) was still playing high-level correspondence chess until the mid-1990s.

Meanwhile Eamon Keogh and Gearoidin Ui Laighleis appear to have withdrawn (or not confirmed tentative entries).

What are the norm possibilities if any with round 8 in progress and the last round this afternoon?

Maybe IM Gary Lane has a chance of a GM norm? he is co-leader on 5/7 and playing Black against GM Glek now. He has Sam this afternoon.

Two results already in round 8 (which started at 9.30am):

Collins 1/2 Maksimenko in GM (16 moves)
    K. Delaney 1/2 Li in IM (24 moves)

It is a characteristic of these events that in every round one or two games end very quickly,

De Verdier needs to beat Wall for an IM norm - his third I think.

Many thanks to ICU for an enjoyable and very competitive Seniors event this year. The concerns above about prizes didn't arise as the joint winners were in the 50+ age group, finishing half a point ahead of the two top 65+ players.

Special congratulations to the new Irish Senior Champions Paul Wallace and Gerry MacElligott, and to all the other winners of the various events!

The whole set of tournaments this week appears to have been a great success in a good venue.

Unfortunately no norms appear to have been achieved this time around but there are never any guarantees.

Especial thanks to Ivan Baburin as arbiter and chief organiser, a very tiring week for him.

The results of the six main tournaments are at http://chess-results.com/tnr402991.aspx?lan=1&art=1

(I left before the blitz so can somebody else please post about that here?)

Yes, congratulations to all the winners.A very enjoyabe tournament even if I did blow the outright win of the title and 400 euro with my ludicrous Ra8+???? in the final game when the simple and obvious Qa4 would have given me a thirteen point advantage on the engines.
Senior events are great fun. All the players are experienced so strategically knowledgeable and their is great camaraderie between the contestants. No young whippersnappers who are booked up to the gills with theory to contend with either is another plus but most of all these senior events bring out people who would not normally play in tournaments at all and that has got to be good for the game.

An enjoyable tournament. We should also congratulate joint Irish champions in the over 65 event: Anthony Doyle & Tim Harding.

+1 on all the +ve commentary on the O50s and O65s tournament. Most enjoyable. As someone who hasn't played a tournament in over a decade I would definitely be encouraged to play more events. Chess highlight for me was Sodacat's instantly winning 0-0-0 in his game against Robin :).

That indeed was the moment that turned the whole championship on its head!

Higher rated contestants, do consider signing up for the World Senior Teams (fairly urgent for this one) or EU Senior Teams (no commitment at this stage).
Unfortunately I am unavailable for the former for family reasons. Rhodes in late April should be a good chess holiday.

The EU Teams in Croatia in September looks attractive too, if the FIDE calendar (which says the venue will be an island resort in the Adriatic) rather than the ICU website/ECU calendar which still lists the inland venue originally scheduled when that event was to be in March.

No! Game scores were not collected :-(

Only the 4 games on the live boards each round are available.
So that makes 28 downloadable games:

Ivan Baburin has also posted the 90 games played in the GM and IM norm events, which you can find via the same link.

This whole festival, from the junior events that commenced on new year's day right through to the concluding blitz last night was enormously successful. All of the organisers deserve great credit and thanks.

    Better than nothing! Thank you.

Perhaps the winners can make the rest of their games available?
