How many points did he get?

As said above, last 16 earned 6k which = 6,000 ranking points. Probably looking at earning 80-90,000 over the two seasons to keep his card which would be his primary target. Thats a decent start.

Rough on Mark Davis to have his cue nicked from his car, giving Selby the walkover. Who nicks a bloody cue from a car.

At his age tough to adapt to a new cue.

Presume the covid regulations meant he wasnt allowed to borrow one to compete? If you're attached to one cue as many players are, thats a real gut punch. Feel for the guy.

My report card on Aaron Hill for the week:

*beat reigning world champion and games greatest ever player
*became officially the No.1 R of Ire player
*got himself inside the world top 100
*earned a decent few quid in the process as well as crucial ranking points
*showed he can compete and live with the very best

Not bad for a rookie on his first week on tour, a solid A. Would give him an A+ but this is a tough school and there's still plenty to work on so hopefully knuckles down and doesnt get too far ahead of himself. Seems to have great attitude and work ethic so dont think he will.

The big thing is the majority of young players are based in the academy playing top players each day which will only make them improve

I know Allen didnt move over but he was able to practice with a few pros at home

But great attitude so hopefully can kick on that was very impressive

I remember John Parrot had his cue stolen sometime back in the '80s and Willie Thorne tried to take advantage of this misfortune by putting a massive bet (think itwas 40,000 pounds) on Parrot to lose. Unfortunately for Willie, Parrot managed to win with the new cue and to make it worse Willie was doing live commentary on the match on BBC. A lesson that top class snooker players will not turn into bad players because of a change of cue. Pity it cost Willie Thorne a kings ransom to find out.

Thats true. If it was me personally, I'd definitely be thinking about moving over, but he may want to stay close to family and friends and i can understand that too. Ken moved over and fergal didnt and fergal made a very good go of it, i think, relative to his ability. Its not as if there arent good players to practice with in cork either, Ross Bulman is another I'd have good hopes for, and I'm sure he can access the Murphy/Fergal/Ken set up in Dublin whenever he wishes.

If it doesnt work out, i guess there will be time to change. He's just 18 so i hope expectations wont get too high initially. Remember, both Neil Robertson and Kyren Wilson didnt make it on their first go on tour. Snooker pro life is an endurance marathon these days...

The Champions League starts on Monday. Another tournament in Milton Keynes and split into 32 groups of 4 and played over two weeks. This one is more a marathon than a sprint but no harm in having more live snooker on.

The first heat was on last week. It's not on TV in Ireland, you'd have to sign up to Matchroom to watch it. I must say I find it very dull so I'm not too bothered.

Must say, a very strong looking qf line up today. Actually fancied we'd see a lot more surprise results this week but 7 out of 8 are top 16 including 5 top 8 which is rare enough for any tournament. Judd has only dropped 2 frames all week and Martin Gould has carried on where he left off at the crucible in August. Good bloke Gould, would love to see him go all the way here, but some stiff opposition to go through.

Yeah I really like Gould too. They said he dropped out for a year to care for his mother who was ill. That's a sign of a good bloke whatever about anything else.

Yeah, i think that was maybe before he turned pro and he's had a fairly long battle with depression too and seems to have come out the other side now. From talking of retiring earlier this year, he's made last 16 of world champs and now in last 8 here. Win this and he'd be back on cusp of top 16. Rooting for him anyway.

Yeah spot on. His mother died when he was in his early 20's according to the internet. In any case, I'll be rooting for him. I always question his choice of tiny glasses. Surely most players use contact lenses these days.

Cant think of very many players who wear glasses, Ashley Carty another i think. Recall Gould being asked about it years ago and replying along the lines he didnt know, it was just how he always played. He would actually look over the lens when he was down on the shot. Whatever works, i guess! Think i read somewhere he may be using specially made lenses now.

I thought Gould had switched to the Dennis Taylor type glasses recently...?

Judd making short work of kyren here. Still conceded 2 frames all week and virtually in sf. Dunno what record is for fewest frames conceded in a 128 tournament, but he'll smash whatever it is if he keeps this up!

As per longstanding custom, may well have put the hex on judd here. Decent chance for Wilson to make this 3-4.

Edit: and the kyren almost instantly lets judd back in!!

Excellent from Martin Gould. That was a really good match. Great win.

It's alright Mark Davis has his cue back. Alls well that ends well:D
Mark Davis has been given back his cue, which went missing from a hotel car park in Milton Keynes on Friday.

Davis was contacted by a member of the public by email late on Friday and the cue, which he has used for 20 years, has now been returned to him.

The Sussex pro wrote on Facebook: “Just to let you know, I have got the cue back now. Just want to say thank you to everyone who shared the message about it and helped to get it returned. Thanks again.”

More good stuff from Martin Gould tonight. Giving Trump a fair bit to think about here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,854 ✭✭✭zuutroy

Selby hit one of the worst shots I've over seen in the 7th frame! Think the cue hit the white at about a 30 degree angle.

Brilliant from Gould, been so solid all day today. Delighted for him. Judd was missing a few but Gould was putting him under pressure, first to do so all week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,472 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

    Good for him.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,534 ✭✭✭Chalk McHugh

Selby unbackable favourite at 2/7 while you can get Gould at 9/4. Gould is evens to reach 7 frames. Selby is a safe bet for this final i feel. Selby 9-5.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,534 ✭✭✭Chalk McHugh

Selby has won his last nine finals. Remarkable record.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,534 ✭✭✭Chalk McHugh

Selby totally dominant so far. Would have been a better final with Judd in it. This could get away from Gould very quickly.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,534 ✭✭✭Chalk McHugh

Some player is Selby. Came within a whisker of reaching and no doubt going on to win his fourth World Championship. Looking like winning his 10th final on the spin here. Without a doubt one of the greats.

Another in the bag for gould.

    4-2

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,534 ✭✭✭Chalk McHugh

Selby looking all the world to go 5-0 in front, loses the fifth frame on the black and gave his opponent some belief. Gould played well the last two frames to get within one frame. 4-3.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,903 ✭✭✭✭Rothko

Great comeback by Gould. He's right back in it now.

What a turnaround. Didn't see that coming at 4-0. Gould was fantastic the last three frames. Fair play to him. Game on tonight.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,534 ✭✭✭Chalk McHugh

Never saw Gould play this well. He has dominated Selby since winning his first frame when 4-0 behind. He has won 6 of the last 7 frames which is not easy against any pro never mind Mark Selby. Wonder what odds he was at when 0-4?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,534 ✭✭✭Chalk McHugh

Very un-Selby like there. The balls all in the open and even a 147 on the cards but played an awful positional shot that forced him to take on a long blue which he missed. Good chance for Gould now. Big mistake from Selby.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,547 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

I watched the first few frames and presumed it was going to be a short final. Had some stuff to do and didn't check the score. What a surprise to see gould 6-5 up!

    C'mon Gouldy!

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,534 ✭✭✭Chalk McHugh

Gould cannot tale advantage though and misses a tricky red with the rest. Selby makes no mistake this time to edge 7-6 in front.

I think a lot of people would have felt the same. Decent final all the same.

7-7. Best of three now. Can Selby finally be beaten im a final?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,854 ✭✭✭zuutroy

That plant had no business going in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,472 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

Fair play to Gould going toe to toe with Selby here

Agonising miss on the blue for gould

Selby must be sick of the sight of his opponents getting results from hit and hope snooker escapes :)

    Bottled it big style.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,931 ✭✭✭Sultan of Bling

Great blue from selby who now leads 8-7

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,472 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

Martin you threw that one away. Critical

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,903 ✭✭✭✭Rothko

Huge mistake by Gould on the blue. It could be a very decisive moment in this tie.
