Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

If you like anti Brit and IRA memes posted by 15 year olds in rural Ireland, Reddit Ireland is where it's at

They do that every now and then. I even got a mention once. I'm a "sad cùnt" or something or other.

Boards.ie is class. Being able to discuss stocks, cars, food, places etc with fellow Irish people and without constant image meme posts and all in separate threads and forums makes it far far superior to the everyday changing r/Ireland circle jerk that's overly moderated and any opinions that are shared by anything less than 51% of the userbase are downvoted and hidden

That's my major issue with Reddit(not just the Ireland sub). It actively encourages echo chambers. Oh you certainly get echo chamber threads, even forums here and on any old style forum layout, the significant difference being because of the chronological non down/upvote layout you can't avoid reading contrary opinions to your own*. This is a good thing.

That said it seems outside of a pretty brief time in internetland where contrary discussion was popular nowadays it's clear people increasingly gravitate towards echo chambers of views they already believe in, where any dissent is downvoted, blocked, or never invited to join in the first place. Though you could argue that's the more natural state of man anyway. Beyond adolescence where people try on different hats to see what suits them, people tend to gravitate towards people who are similar, birds of a feather and all that. By adulthood most people's views are pretty set, by middle age those views are set in stone, rooted to deep foundations in concrete and that's comfortable for them and can be extremely uncomfortable for them to grapple with anything that questions those views.

Time is another factor. On Reddit a thread can vanish very quickly into the ether, so you can get a lot of repetition, whereas you can have threads here going back many years that are added to daily. In more technical subs for enthusiasts and the like both the "accepted view" and quickly fading threads can mean an awful lot of bad information rises to the top and becomes the Truth.

*Unless you go on a ignore poster spree, in which case your opinions are delicate anyway.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

While I get the down/upvoting thing I don't get it at the same time.
Here is like people meeting up for a coffee, yea it can get out of hand but there is some sort of reasoned flow, even if a thread descends into a back and forth between a couple of people. Which if good debating can be enjoyable in it's own right.
Reddit on the other hand is like me and the lads at three in the morning repeating the same waffle to each other we came to a conclusion on an hour previously.

First they came for the socialists...

The one thing that gets me abou Reddit is why people volunteer to moderate it. Boards, sure given that it's a message board few enough people, even in Ireland would use IME but Reddit is one of the most visited and profitable sites in the world. Niche subs, sure but why someone would moderate a big one like like r/politics for free is unfathomable IMO.

Cliffs of Moher yes. Threads starting with "Ah lads here look mental health" etc, pictures of boxes of f*cking "taytos" that their ma sends them if they're abroad, or a picture of Tweet by some 19 year old making a very forgettable quip and they all get 10k upvotes.
I really feel like I'm either completely out of touch with Irish people these days or they're just a bunch of absolute retards on that sub.
Plus you can't post your view that doesn't go with everyone else's or it just gets downvoted into oblivion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,455 ✭✭✭Tork

I agree that boards threads often degenerate after a few pages but I'd rather have that than reddit's up voting and down voting. There are far too many subreddits as well. The layout of the place isn't for me.

Anything that makes you automatically like on your own posts is up itself anyways. I got fed up with having to remove them and then realised it probably then looks like I got a dislike which didn’t make any sense?!.... questioned the logic, of even being on there in the first place even if it was just for tech help and then shut that shiįt down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,882 ✭✭✭frozenfrozen

whatever about people downvoting stuff they disagree with there, the massive benefit to boards is you can see who thanked stuff.

500 upvotes from random yanks who are easily swayed by the gist of an argument...

I prefer forums like this because I can remember the posters better because I have an avatar and a name to picture them with, unlike Reddit where it's just a brief username over a comment

That and it sucks almighty donkey c**k when you're downvoted for no reason other then not kowtowing to the party (subreddit) line. Spending your time without considering other worldviews isn't healthy, I'm sure most of the divisiveness today comes from people spending too much on Reddit/Twitter/whatever the big internet site is in their comfort.

It hasn't. Saw the accounts once in the secret mods forum and the amount spent paying the mods for their services is scandalous.

You get paid by the yellow card, red card with extra wages for forum bans.

If you manage to give someone a site ban you get employee of the month with your picture in the super secret mods bunker forum.

Agreed, I find it completely bewildering, could never understand how it works. And like CapallDorcha I can't fathom how anyone would be willing to mod on reddit for free.

The option to nest replies on Boards as threads go along would be nice, along the lines of having the our current set up for threads as the default view, but being able to click on a button which would nest the replies of posters who are going back and forth with one another so that they branch off from the main thread - but the site would have to be completely overhauled obvs so it's not going to happen.

As a civil servant, this is news to me: (from reddit)
If you know where to look, you can find a fair amount of information on Boards about the inner workings of government departments. It's actually pretty cool the way civil servants use it as a way of leaking information that is far too niche for any newspaper to care about.
    Sorry, what???

I went on it on mobile to find out. You can't view it on mobile without downloading the app. One of my biggest issues with it in general is it's insistence to download the app and use it.

Couple that with the 1990's style of forum and I just can't. Boards, with the issues it has, is far superior imo.

Reading that, it appears that a lot of posters on that thread were banned from boards.

Even though boards frequently drives me mad, well, sections of it, I think it's a great thing overall.

I appreciate reddit for it's niches and such, but I don't really see the appeal of the reddit Ireland page whenever I use it.

There's also a fair bit of life here still, I thought boards was slowly dying for years, but the pandemic has definitely brought more activity than previously.
