Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I know new words come along all the time and languages evolve but Eatery..... really?!

Wtf was wrong with restaurant or cafe?!

When I look up the origins it says it was first used in 1901 but I've only heard it in the past few years.

Not a new word but in terms of food... they would nearly slap the word "organic" on a soiled bag of nappies these days and charge you an extra few Bob for the organic matter inside.

Before that was probably 'farm fresh'.
    Before that 'choicest'
Before that something else meaningless. Marketing spin crap(Fair Trade crap)

I find the overuse of the word "Bespoke" irritating.

    Here's another one: "Oven-baked".
What else are you going to bake something in?

I only ever see the term “eatery” in Eddie rockets in Ireland.

The problem being I always need to go to the sh1tery two hours after having a feed in there.....Which is a major pain when I’m out with the wife at he shopery.

Nunnery: old enough for Shakespeare to have used it but rarely heard nowadays.
Cattery not to be confused with catery; the former is where cats are housed, the latter where provisions are stored.

Restaurant, cafe, diner, grill, dining room, cafeteria, inn , canteen, bistro, brasserie, hostelry.

    Why pick on eatery?

    Deli counter!.

How the fcuk did this term ever catch on?
The hot food counters in shops and garages couldn't be further from delicatessens.
    Why are they called delis?

    Catery - storing provisions
    Cattery - storing cats
Chinese food = cats, so they say catery but mean cattery

But a spar isn't an eatery. So how does an eatery constitute a "new way of eating" different from that of a restaurant? What's the progress?
