Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm 20 and looking for a summer job in Galway. I've tried places closer to me (I live an hour away from the city) but no luck, so I thought I'd try Galway. My question is are there jobs to be got in the city and if so, where?

Keep an eye there, most pubs and restaurants will be a lot busier in the Summer so try them, also the larger hotels.

I left a while ago but when I left retailers were unfortunately were only giving 4-12 hour contracts. You might have to get a couple of different jobs and possibly go for a gig with a catering company or the Tote during Race Week

I'm just about to graduate from NUIG with what will most likely be a 1.1 mathematical science degree. I have summer work in a stock room in the city center but I'd much prefer to be doing relevant to my degree. Does anyone know of any companies around Galway are taking on anyone at the moment? Or just one's that would be looking for mathematically minded people? Cheers.

If anyone has no work experience, then you have no hope of getting a summer job. The only jobs that are easy to get are those sales/commission jobs. I work shadowed intense communications for the day. I was brought down to Limerick and had to stand up for 6 hours without any break begging people to sign a form and give their bank account details in the middle of a street!!. But after the summer when everyone has gone back to college it does become a little bit easier to find a job. But otherwise I would not waste time and paper sending cv's into bars without any work experience in those type of jobs.

Ignore this, absolute nonsense. You can get a job if you can demonstrate you've developed the required skills through different activities. Clubs, societies, sports teams, volunteering etc.

Incidentally, spotted a sign in the window of Fun Max, Galway Shopping Centre today (they unlock/repair phones). Looking for part-time and full-time staff. Might be suited to a computer engineering student!

They are going to get CVs from people who have work experience. Who are they going to pick? I have yet to hear of someone who got a summer job in a bar/restaurant without prior experience unless they know the manager which is often the case of someone getting a job.. The job market is different to what it what was 10 years ago.

You'll absolutely get a job if you apply everywhere. Not just dropping in a CV to a few places without following up. You need to be applying online on Galwayjobs etc, reading the advertiser, applying for Raceweek catering. In the meantime volunteer for whatever you can. When you get interviews they'll want to know about the lack of experience but also what you're doing now to rectify that.

Best of luck. It won't be easy but hard-work will get you something.

To say that its impossible to get a summer job without work experience is absolutely untrue, I know of plenty who managed to last summer and the market is even better now. Maybe you've experienced otherwise but that's not representative of the whole. Discouragement and negativity doesn't help either.

As long as you're not picky with what you do, there is always work to be found. Best time is probably now. Places looking for summer staff, and some part-time working students are either moving back home or doing a summer abroad.

Anyone know how you get one of those jobs where you just hold a sign? I presume the pay is pretty miserable but seems easy and I've tried about 30 places but nothing so far!

Thought it may be worth giving people a heads up about Energizing Plus as every day they advertise a number of positions on the various job sites.

Couple of weeks back I send off my CV to a load of places and got a call and then an email from them. In the on-line ad the job was described as office work and a salary of 17-22K a year. Had a feeling that something was off about it from the way the guy on the phone talked about it but figured it's been awhile since I interviewed for a job so the experience would be good.

On the day I went to the office and was greeted by a receptionist who told me to take a seat and the manager would be speak to me in a moment. He went into an office and left me sitting for 5 minutes. Eventually he popped his head out of the door and said "we will see you now". The office was bare but for a desk and two chairs, nothing hung on the walls. not a single item on the table. It looked as if they'd just literally moved in. Most surprising of all was that there was no "we" but rather it was the receptionist who interviewed me.

During the interview he went off on some prepared spiel about how much money I could make and how the benefits were amazing. He illustrated the way the company words by drawing an inverted pyramid and when I said the whole thing feels like a pyramid scheme he repeatedly pointed to the diagram he had drawn and said "a pyramid points upward". At this stage I had long ago realised that what he was doing was trying to dress up door to door sales as something enticing and just wanted out of there. I did ask what the salary was and he said that "there is no salary but rather commissions. You get 25 euro per sale and can easily do 100 sales a week". As you can imagine those figures don't really add up and when I pulled him on it he replied that "yes, many of our reps do 100 sales a week". I pointed out that doing 100 sales a week at 25 euro a sale earns you 25.000 a week and you could see his entire face drop. He corrected himself and said that the average sale per rep per day was 4 and that the highest ever in a day was 13. At this stage I tried to hide my laughter and got up to leave.

They're the Vodafone D2D guys too IIRC. They tend to have a rake of different positions eternally available on the likes of jobs.ie requiring little to no experience. Their turnover of sales reps is massive.

The job I applied for didn't have their name attached as if it had I would never have bothered given that it's pretty clear what they are up to.

Should point out that I'm looking for a job at the minute, looking for office based work as I've spent the best part of the past two years unable to walk due to messing up my leg and while I'm getting better I'm not in a position where I can spent 8-10 hours a day on it.

Hey guys, just thought I'd post here on the off chance that someone might know somebody who can do what I require.

Basically in the next 2-3 days or so I will have roughly 500 bags (nut bags) of turf on a bog in Bullaun out beside Loughrea. The bog is excellent and no problem for car/van/lorry to access it. So I'm looking to get these bags of turf delivered back to my house about 10 minutes away from Gort. About a 40 minute journey in total.

The budget I've marked out for this is €200.

If anyone knows anyone that might be interested in doing it, I'd be very grateful if you could let me know

    Cheers
