New Model Army - Green and Grey

    Such an amazing, amazing song.
At Rob Heaton's funeral a few years back (NMA's drummer) Justin got up ans played an acoustic version of it, I'd say there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

How did he get through the last verse (below) singing it to his dead best friend???

No, not for one second did you look behind you
    As you were walking away
Never once did you wish any of us well
Those who had chosen to stay
And if that's what it takes to make it
In the place that you live today
Then I guess you'll never read these
Letters that I send From the valleys of the green and the grey

    Epic
    Check it out

Love - Live And Let Live
Oh the snot has caked against my pants
    It has turned into crystal
    There's a bluebird sitting on a branch
I guess I'll take my pistol
    Syd Barrett - Baby Lemondade
    In the sad town
    cold iron hands clap
    the party of clowns outside
rain falls in grey far away
    please, please, Baby Lemonade

In the evening sun going down
when the earth streams in, in the morning
make your name like a ghost,
send a cage through the post
    please, please, Baby Lemonade

I'm screaming, I met you this way
you're nice to me like ice
in the clock they sent through a washing machine
come around, make it soon, so alone...
    please, please, Baby Lemonade
There may be better lyrics. I don't know because I haven't heard every song ever written.

'You'll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking'

    Radiohead - Nude.

Maybe it's all in the delivery though!

He said 'The three wise men came a long way
Following that pin hole in the sky
    Yeah that one right there'
She said 'I don't believe in any old Jesus
If there was a God, then why is my arse
    The perfect height for kicking?'
He said 'I'll shine for you, I'll burn for you
Yea I'll shine for you, that's what I'll do'
    He said 'They're like headlights
    In the rear view mirror
    They're closer that they seem
And from this gutter we're still staring at the stars'
She said 'Would ya go away and ****e
Last night all you did was curse those stars
You said they sang to you of hope'
He said 'The sun gives life, and it takes it away
But like all the greats, it'll burn out someday'
She said 'I don't mind, I don't want to get bored
I don't want to end up beached on this shore
I want to be that star'
And then I'll shine for you. Then I'll burn for you.
Then I can shine for you. That's what I'll do.

I think Maximo Park have the best lyrics I've heard ... insightful, touching and colloquial :)

    You are calm and reposed
    Let your beauty unfold
Pale white, like the skin stretched over your bones
    Spring keeps you ever close
    You are second-hand smoke
You are so fragile and thin, standing trial for your sins
Holding on to yourself the best you can
You are the smell before rain
You are the blood in my veins

Brand New-The boy who blocked his own shot

    bright Eyes-The big picture

"You were carved from bone but your heart is just sand and the wind is going to scatter it and cover everything with love"

"Consistency like that which I have craved is that people change so unexpectedly. And realization finds you in a drunken airport, some planes depart and others never arrived. So with this in mind, I don't plan on waiting if it's time to leave and break these old ties. Without something else this vision is fading, but until its gone the pain will make us try. Yeah, it will make us try."
Bright eyes - I Watched You Taking Off

Did it all get real? I guess it's real enough
They got refrigerators full of blood
    Another century spent pointing guns
    At anything that moves
Sometimes I worry that I've lost the plot
My twitching muscles tease my flippant thoughts
I never really dreamed of heaven much
Until we put him in the ground
But it's all I'm doing now
Listening for patterns in the sound
    Of an endless static sea
    But once the satellite's deceased
It blows like garbage through the streets
Of the night sky to infinity

    But don't you weep
    (Don't you weep for them)
    Don't you weep
    (Don't you weep)
    There is nothing as lucky
    Honey, don't you weep
    (Don't you weep for them)
    Don't you weep
    (Don't you weep)
    There is nothing as lucky
    As easy
    Or free

Don't be a criminal in this police state
You'd better shop and eat and procreate
You've got vacation days, then you might escape
To a condo on the coast
I set my watch to the atomic clock
I hear the crowd count down until the bomb gets dropped
I always figured there'd be time enough
I never let it get me down
But I can't help it now
Looking for faces in the clouds
I've got some friends I barely see
But we're all planning to meet
We'll lay in bags as dead as leaves
    All together for eternity

    But don't you weep
    (Don't you weep for us)
    Don't you weep
    (Don't you weep)
There is no one as lucky
    Honey, don't you weep
    (Don't you weep for us)
    Don't you weep
    (Don't you weep)
    There is nothing as lucky
    As easy
    Or free

    Or free
    Or free
    Or free

    There is nothing
    There's nothing
    There's nothing

Death cab for Cutie: I will follow you into the dark
    If Heaven and Hell decide
    That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you
    When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

You and me have seen everything to see
    From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
    It's nothing to cry about
'cause we'll hold each other soon
    In the blackest of rooms

Holes, dug by little moles, angry jealous
Spies, got telephones for eyes, come to you as
Friends, all those endless ends, that can't be
Tied, oh they make me laugh, an' always make me
Cry, til they drop like flies, an' sink like polished
Stones, of all th' stones i throw, how does that ol' song go

    Mercury Rev.Holes

Roger Waters lyrics are also mostly amazing.

    "Paper Thin Hotel"

The walls of this hotel are paper-thin
Last night I heard you making love to him
The struggle mouth to mouth and limb to limb
The grunt of unity when he came in
I stood there with my ear against the wall
I was not seized by jealousy at all
In fact a burden lifted from my soul
I heard that love was out of my control
A heavy burden lifted from my soul
I heard that love was out of my control

I listened to your kisses at the door
I never heard the world so clear before
You ran your bath and you began to sing
    I felt so good I couldn't feel a thing

I stood there with my ear against the wall ...

And I can't wait to tell you to your face
And I can't wait for you to take my place
You are The Naked Angel In My Heart
You are The Woman With Her Legs Apart
It's written on the walls of this hotel
You go to heaven once you've been to hell

A heavy burden lifted from my soul
I heard that love was out of my control

Jimmy MacCarthy's The People of West Cork and Kerry.

Jimmy wrote it at the age of 45 when he was living as a bachelor at his home in County Wicklow. It was at this point, Jim thought he had lost all confidence in his abilities as a songwriter until he recieved a letter from a special someone from the sunny south west. It was then released in 2000 as a single predecessing his comeback album The Moment.

It is his lyrics that make me wish I was from Cork sometimes.
It seems to me the people of west Cork and Kerry,
They seem to understand best, the ways of my soul,
They seem to recognise, the healing ways of a young man,
Born into pain, and for the song had to roam.

And now though still not old, I live alone in the garden,
The pen it is slow, and my heart is at rest,
And when I see the world, I see a world without turmoil,
In all things I see now, I look for the best,

I know all the towns and I know all of the places,
And I have kissed your lips and I have held your hand,
Been all around the world and have not found such graces,
For the people of west Cork and Kerry, were grand.

When I was a young lad, the world was heavy on me,
You have me plain talk, and you made me feel blessed.
You gave me the magic, of all that went before me,
And when I needed to lay low, you gave me the nest.

I know all the towns and I know all of the places,
And I have kissed your lips and I have held your hand,
Been all around the world and have not found such graces,
For the people of west Cork and Kerry, were grand.

    Open Road - Bryan Adams

    I'm sitting at the wheel
    I got a green light
Not afraid of nothin' cuz heart and soul
    I'm built for life
    So let the engine roar
    Push the pedal down
I want the white lines on the highway
To lead me out of town
I'm rolling on and on and on
    Who knows where I'm goin'?
Life is an open road - it's the best story never told
It's an endless sky - it's the deepest sea
Life is an open road to me
Life is an open road to me
I got headlights to guide me thru the night
I got the window down and the radio playing
    It makes me feel alive

    Machines by Biffy Clyro

I would dig a thousand holes to lay next to you
I would dig a thousand more if I needed to
I look around the grave for an escape route of old routines
There doesn’t seem to be any other way

Cause I’ve started falling apart I’m not savouring life
I’ve forgotten how good it could be to feel alive

Crazy as it sounds you wont feel as low as you feel right now
At least that’s what I've been told by everyone
I whisper empty sounds in your ear and hope that you won’t let go
Take the pieces and build them skywards

Cause I've started falling apart I’m not savouring life
I've forgotten how good it could be to feel alive

I've started falling apart I'm not savouring life
Take the pieces and build them skywards
I've forgotten how good it could be to feel alive
Take the pieces and build them skywards

I've started falling apart I'm not savouring life
Take the pieces and build them skywards
I've forgotten how good it could be to feel alive
Take the pieces and build them skywards

I've started falling apart I'm not savouring life
Take the pieces and build them skywards
I've forgotten how good it could be to feel alive
Take the pieces and build them skywards

Take the pieces and build them skywards
    and
Take the pieces and build them skywards
    and
Take the pieces and build them up to the sky.

Joe McDonnell by Brian Warfield of The Wolfe Tones, imo one of the greatest Irish ballads.
Oh my name is Joe McDonnell from Belfast town I came,
That city I will never see again.
For in the town of Belfast I spent many happy days,
And I loved that town in oh so many ways.
For it's there I spent my childhood and found for me a wife,
I then set out to make for her a life.
Oh but all my young ambition met with bitterness and hate,
I soon found myself inside a prison gate.

And you dare to call me a terrorist while you look down your gun,
When I think of all the deeds that you have done -
    You have plundered many nations
    Divided many lands
    You have terrorized their people
You ruled with an iron hand
And you brought this reign of terror to my land

Through the many months internment in the Maidstone and the Maze,
I thought about my land throughout those days.
Why my country was divided, why I was now in jail,
imprisoned without crime or without trial.
And though I love my country I'm not a bitter man,
I've seen cruelty and injustice at first hand.
And so one faithful morning I shook bold freedom's hand,
for right or wrong I tried to free my land.

    Then one cold October's morning
I was trapped in the lion's den
And I found myself in prison once again.
I was committed to the H-Blocks for fourteen years or more,
on the "blanket" the conditions they were poor.
Then a hunger strike we did commence for the dignity of man,
but it seemed to me that no one gave a damn.
Oh but now I am a saddened man I've watched my comrades die,
if only people cared or wondered why.

Oh may God shine on you Bobby Sands for the courage you have shown,
may your glory and your fame be widely known.
And Francis Hughes and Ray McCreesh who died unselfishly,
and Patsy O'Hara, and the next in line is me.
And those who lie behind me may your courage be the same,
and I pray to god my life was not in vain

And though sad and bitter was the year of 1981
for everything we lost and nothing is won

I tend to like lyrics from a wide section of muscians and artists that are simple enough but effective, such as ...

    Remember Yesterday by John Miles

Misty silence of the early morning
All around another day is dawning.
    Goodbyes ain't easy,
So no-one sees me when I go.

Only time is gonna last forever,
Just remember what we had together.
    I must be leavin'
And I can't even let it show.
I am on my way,Remember Yesterday.

Lose your memory in a thousand places
Disappearing in a sea of faces,
    Always lonely,
I live the only way I know.

Holding on until I don't remember
Early morning back in late September,
    Now you're behind me,
The clouds remind me I'm alone.
I am on my way ,Remember Yesterday.

My mind must be the gypsy
    That keeps me movin' on.
My heart must be the only thing
    That's callin' me back home.
    My memories are souvenirs
And all there is to show.
    For someone who's been everywhere,
I've got no place to go.

Spend a life time searching for a reason,
Find the answer in the changing season.
    By tomorrow
    All the sorrow disappears.
Far away another boat is sailing,
    Making time before the
    light starts failing,
Never knowing where I'm going day to day.
I am on my way,Remember Yesterday
    .

    South American by Brian Wilson

Got a letter from a long lost cousin of mine
Who owns a little piece of heaven in the Argentine
    It's a different planet, it's a different place
He calls it out of this world without traveling to space

It's not just a lesson in geography
    No equation to unravel algebraically
It's written in the wind and on the tropical sea
From south of the equator it keeps callin'to m
    e

South American well you know I would
South American if I only could
I wanna be, I wanna be going back

You only get to heaven if you chase your dreams
Let the paparazzi flash, let the tabloid scream
I've been around too long to care what anyone says
I'm hungry and I'm doing lunch with Cameron Diaz

South American she's got that tango look
South American she?ll read you like a book
I wanna be, I wanna be going back

It rolls off my tongue like a magical phrase
A simple translation this message conveys
Gimme that, gimme that South American girl

I wanna be, I wanna be where it's at
South American I'm not on some trip
South American I just long for a ship
A sailing boat or anything that floats
    Going back

    and slightly more deeper ...

Death In The Afternoon (I Remember ) -Ultravox

    Chorus:

We turned the dial, we heard the news and laughed, we don't know why
We drank the wine and spoke of times we knew of days gone by
We flicked through photographs we had, somehow they made us sad
Remembering the times we used to have, it made us cry

Oh I remember death in the afternoon

A silence fell about the room with harsh and heavy calm
The lovers and the friends all felt the same, it kept us warm
We raised our glass and drank to times we had, but'd see no more
The pictures of the past would haunt us still, and there remains

Oh I remember death in the afternoon

    (Repeat chorus 2 times)
