Hi All ...I've noticed the leaves browning and even falling already...seem to be lots of berries early this year...is this a sign of a cold winter ?
Are there any winter predictions yet

No, the state of the flora is a result of preceding weather conditions and the plants are not predicting the future. Should it be a colder than normal winter, it's a coincidence.

Leaves have been brown all "summer" in Donegal after multiple winter storms in May and June and the constant rain and lack of sunshine thereafter.

This summer certainly has been one of the windiest I can remember. Regarding this winter, let's hope next weeks Scandi high eventually retrogresses to Greenland and stays with us till next February. If only the Atlantic could be shut out for that long!

Ah Lads, this thread is a little early don't you think?
Two weeks early but early none the less. Still, best thread of the year. Don't know how this winter will play out. Last year I guessed it would be mild and it was. I thought the early summer would suffer below average temperatures due to the cold air being locked up all winter. Not tooting my own horn or anything. I am expecting another mild Winter but I haven't looked an the Enso thread or the sun activity thread recently to make that determination. Saying that we may see an effect this year from the low solar activity from the past two years. 2008 was the end of the last solar cycle and we have the big snow in 2010. 2018 and 2019 were both low numbers so we may experience something. The way 2020 has gone so far I would not be surprised. |

It’s the most wonderful thread of the year.

Well whatever the winter brings, it can only be better than the sheit we endured for the past 2 years surely. 2017-18, when you remove the BFTE event, was an average winter and I'd certainly take that if I was offered it.

I 'd take an average winter overall if we had an event like Storm Emma this winter. The only downside to that beast from the east was the timing, even with day time temperatures close to or below freezing the snow still melted.

Mild wet and windy. No snow last winter, and none this one. A forecast based on nothing but pessimism. And a very warm Arctic.

We're thinking of going on holidays in late December/early January, the last time we did that was 2010 so I wouldn't be surprised if we had a 2010 repeat this year
