Tractor Alternator

I bought a new alternator for my Massey ferguson 390 16 months ago. The warranty is 12 months. I am told the rotor is damaged and I need a new one. Have I any come back here really as the warranty is out? He is charging me full price for the new one. This would be a spurious alternator.
