Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi all, After reading this thread, have we established that there are no free green lanes to be had? That's a shame. I have a 97 LWB Landcruiser and I'd love to get a bit more use out of it. Don't want to break it on anything too challenging and I'm not looking to modify at all. Just would love if there were some reasonably inaccessable parts of the country where you need a 4x4 to get to and have a wee picnic etc. Sounds idylic doesn't it? (wife is expecting, so the hikes we used to go on are on hold) Any suggestions? About the green laning...not the pregnant wife.

    Hi John and welcome.

Yes it is a pity there are no extensive rights of way network here. You need to go to the wilds of Donegal and a few other places before you find much of interest, then you need to team up with someone local to get the best out of it. A recent charity event used a lot of tracks http://www.4x4challenge.org/

Otherwise, some of the 4x4 clubs have open days on Coilte forest tracks, see the recent thread for one on 25th October.

Cheers Sean, I'll have a lok at that. If I discover anywhere on my travels, I'll post it here. Maybe that Google Street View might come in handy after all....

There is a area in Kilmacanogue, Co Wicklow that bikers use on the side of The Sugarloaf. I havent seen any 4X4s using it though. Its at N53 09`37", W 6 09`58", through a gate on the left up from the village. I think its common ground. I dont know if its legal for the bikers to be there or not but the local farmer doesnt object.

I was passing by that a few weeks ago, enterance is all blocked up. Not to say by now there's not another way in, but someone sometime had an objection to it.

There is a meet and greet event being set up as a pre-curser to an inter-club challenge at Dartfield Equestrian centre near Loghrea on 16-17 July. Extensive off road courses from easy to "you'll be winching for hours"
On the back of the enthusiasm for the interclub challenge I am pleased to announce a meet and greet event to be held on the 16/17 July 2011 at Dartfield off road centre. Camping/BBQ/beer drinking/welly throwing/ all available for the princely sum of €30!!! On the Sunday there is the option to put some trucks into the vintage parade/display in Ballinasloe.
As this is the pre-curser to the interclub challenge proper I would hope to get support across the board. Looking forward to seeing you all there!

As far as I know this is on again this weekend on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

It's open any time to individuals or groups as far as I'm aware, just turn up and pay, has one of the clubs got something going on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,339 ✭✭✭brembo26

Yeah im wrong with that particular location :P I know it does have something to do with some other Equestrian centre out near loughrea. Ill get the name of it and hopefully have it posted by tomorrow :)

Flowerhill 4x4 is around that area, caters for the more extreme end, definitely not for shiny motors!

Yep thats the one! Was considering going up with one of the lads that has a pajero but it sounds a bit too extreme for the jeep. Its a long wheel base and normal clearance. Best thing it has really is a set of BF A/T's. No where near prepared enough :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

A bunch of lads I know are going today, it is an extreme course, their insurance requires you to where a helmet!

If you're around Loughrea and hear shouts of "Banzai!" followed by a loud crash, that's one of them throwing his Suzuki off the track again!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

Flowerhill 4x4 is open regularly now, details here - http://www.4xforum.net/index.php?topic=875.0

They are going to develop a course for shinys but ran out of time before last weekend. A standard vehicle will go round the majority of the current course on mud tyres.

Ist 4xforum swapmeet will be held at Dartfield Equestrian Centre near Loughrea on 15/16 October.

Clear out your shed and sell your old crap, buy more crap essential parts and fill your shed back up!

20 euro for people selling stuff, free for prosective buyers, all makes of trucks, Offroad course also open for the weekend.

Say off-roading Saturday, barbecue byo (and a few beers) Sat evening ...

(the more that go for the off-roading Sat , the better for those selling parts on Sunday)

Sale on Sunday starting around 12 noon until 4 / 5 pm , so that those coming up the Sunday only also have the opportunity of doing a bit off-roading in the morning ...

did a list of free places ever get listed ?
or did this thread turn into a posting for paying clubs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

There's pretty much nowhere in Ireland to play for free. The only exceptions are a few areas like the wilds of Donegal with tracks that require local knowledge you're only going to get through a club or the likes of 4xforum.net. There just isn't a historical rights of way structure like in the UK.

hey ya any course in munster nothing too serious im based in kerry but probably will have to travel ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

I assume you mean offroad course which is why I moved your post here.

There's nothing down your way I'm aware of. Munster 4x4 do guided events in the Ballyhouras but aren't cheap.

If you are prepared to travel a little further, there's Flowerhill and Dartfield, both in Galway, as in the above posts. There's an event at Dartfield this weekend.

Have a look at the website, fair crowd going to Dartfield this weekend, possibly 40 or more. There's links to all the clubs on there as well.

Dartfield has courses for all levels of skill or shineyness of 4x4 ;)

any offroading in kerry greenlaning etc pay and play

I have found a few tracks around Dublin/Wicklow mountains. You can get behind the barriers on some of them you just have to look for a way in, dont ask me where they are and I suggest no one else mentions where these places are for obvious reasons.

  • Registered Users Posts: 42 grayman

I pay my way and more no problems. However paying €60 each time for the one hours off roading that I would want to do a few times a year doesnt work for me. In the UK there are hundreds of free green lanes to use and I started this thread to see if there are any in Ireland.

    Hey Dave.

Just came across this.. Did you find a free place? If not i use the army one in kildare where they train the lads for driving the pajeros off road. Its free and anyone can use it although you have to stick to the track and only have one jeep on it at anyone time and if they catch you messing they will ask you to leave.

Its not for extreme stuff but can be a good bit of fun :D

Where exactly does this start/end? Any time I'm down I see random jeeps dotted about but figured they were all trainers & jockeys in them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 42 grayman

Come off the N7 and head as if you're going to Killcullen and about 2 miles down you will see a track on your left follow this track around and over the hill and its on the far side you cant see it from the road. I found it by chance last year and go down about once a month.....

Can you confirm that it's driveable? It's Coilte land and they insist on €13m public liability insurance for vehicle access.

    It's advertised as a walking trail. http://www.trailkilkenny.ie/walking-trails/brandon-hill/

There was a time in the not too distant past when that Army site was out of bounds, and some 4x4 owners were threatened with prosecution if they drove on it. It would be nice to know that that threat has now been lifted for good....!

No way, brilliant. I spend a lot of time down that neck of the woods. I have a house on the St.mullins side, and look at brandon hill form the garden.

Could you possibly PM me the directions or location for the entrance?

    Thanks in advance!

    howdy all.

new to the whole 4x4 thing. driving a 4wd cr-v and a few questions.

crv not the best thing in the world to use butility it'll do the job I suppose for the light stuff.

    1) what's the thoughts of off reading at night ? definitely better to do it during the day indeed but anyone go at night ?

    2) any free light stuff that the crv can handle around Dublin, Wicklow, Kildare, Louth and Meath ?

    3) legality of these free off roads. fines etc ?

    4) crv overall any good for this ? not heavy stuff... using automatic too

    5) any boards days where the guys meet up for fun free offroading ? like a meet

    Hi KS&L

    1. Night driving wouldn't be recommended unless you know the area well and don't go alone!.

    2. There's no rights of way network in Ireland like you get in England and Wales. There's a few drivable lanes in Wicklow, Donegal, Cork and Kerry but you need local knowledge to find them. Thers's been past discussion on some of themif you read back up the thread.

    3. Legality is a grey area. If there's a gate or a barrier you probably shouldn't be there even if you can get round them in your 4x4.

    4. Organised off roading in Ireland tends towards the extreme and after the last years rain even the easy tracks at Dartfield off road centre are only drivable with mud tyres.

There's pretty much no free off roading here and a limited number of pay and play sites with no one really catering for soft roaders and shiny motors.

Some clubs like Leinster 4x4 rent Coilte forest and hold open days with some gentler off roading, typical cost €40-60.

    Munster 4x4 have a Christmas event - http://www.donedeal.ie/for-sale/othersports/4261910

www.4xforum.net held a charity event yesterday at Dartfield which was a total mudbath but a great sucess! They sometimes arrange meets at Dartfield and Flowerhill (around €30 a day) and will have links to various club's events.

    Hi Sean,

    thanks for the reply there,

judging from what your saying there is that there's no hills etc, that i could scout to the top off without a lot of difficulty in regards to legality through barriers etc. ?

    thanks for the informative post.

are there are "free" or lanes that you know off yourself that you could share ?

    thanks again

Am over in Australia now, have a 4x4 and doing some great trails. All free of course. The govt even puts road signs on some of them and levels ruts in the tracks. You can bush bash your own trails too if needed. Bins are often found at free campsites that are collected by the council even in some seriously remote locations.

Ireland would be an amazing place if it opened up more 4x4 trails. I used to go hiking with my friends most weekends regardless of weather. I also did alot of camping and if our major trails such as the wicklow way, western way etc had 4x4 trails parrallel to the walking trails with horse trails too it would be a huge boost for tourism. Would be a good capital investment and would create some jobs in the building process.

Do it like the Appalachian trail in the US and have doorless cabins every so often for groups to stop in and camp. If it can work in the US/Australia it could easily work here.

If I ever returned home I would be sad to leave the 4x4ing behind. It is a great freedom.

There isn't really, you could join a 4x4 club. Munster or Leinster 4x4, they do days out.

There is a pay & play site in Kilkea co Kildare, near Castledermot. It's about €40 or so, and you can bring your own. It's based in an old quarry pit.

See the sticky at the top, nowhere really to mess about for free.
