All sorts of fun towards the end of stage 4 yesterday with crashes and insults been turfed out. Shorter stage today at 140km from just south of Rome down to the coast. Rolling start with a downhill and then what looks like a city centre loop to the finish.

No word yet on Tom Dumoluin continuing or pulling out after yesterdays crash and loosing 4 minutes

    Technical Overview:
After the very long stage of yesterday, we get a short a relatively easy stage. You would not tell that by looking at the start though. From Frascati, where they arrived yesterday, the peloton will immediately begin to climb the first hill of the day, the uncategorized climb of Rocca Priora (9.5 km at 4.5%). Its fast descent leads to the second (and hardest) climb of the day, Rocca di Papa (5.5 km at 6.2%), still uncategorized (why???). You might recognize these climbs if you followed the (now defunct) Roma Maxima editions of a few years ago, that featured this two climbs in the finale (although Rocca di Papa was called Campi di Annibale and would top 100m higher). While in that race these climbs were enough to force some selection and decide the group disputing the victory, here they are more than 100 km to go, so they will just decide the break of the day, which nevertheless does have some chances to dispute the victory. After the descent of Rocca di Papa the terrain becomes flat and pretty uninteresting up until the last (...and only, officially) climb of the day, Sezze (GPM4, 3.9 km at 5.2%), which is followed by another small hill of 2.5 km at 4%. Overall, not a tough climb situated about 50 km to go, the last 40 being completely flat all the way to the final circuit (only one lap to be made) in Terracina.

Dumoulin to start the stage and see how it goes. These guys are some tough mofo's or, one could argue, incredibly silly to risk further damage. The life of a professional cyclist I guess!

In other news, four cyclists have been named as part of Operation Anderlass - the doping ring which came to light during the cross country skiing WC's. Petacchi is no surprise but the names of current riders, Kristijan Koren and Kristjian Durasek, will raise eyebrows as to the efficiency of the blood bio-passport. Actually, it doesn't really work!

I hope Dumoulin can stay at the Giro ...maybe win a few stages .....no one knows yet what can happen in 2.5 weeks

He'll need to be cautious if he is to be in good shape for the TdF - apart from the swelling on his knee, there has to be a risk of infection with such a cut from a chainring.....I wonder if a TUE for an IV antibiotic will be needed?

Tom abandoned in the first couple of km. Shame to see him go but he obviously knew straight away there was no point trying to continue

Hopefully he,ll be in form for the tour with Nico drilling it on the front for him as they block the sky Ineosbots

    GC times neutralised early

What we suspected earlier has just been made official. Given the wet conditions, timings for the general classification will be taken on the first passage of the finish line in Terracina with 9km to go. That means the overall contenders can sit up and take no risks in the closing kilometres, leaving the sprinters to get on with it.

He actually seems a very likeable character , comes across well in interview and usually has a smile.

Sam would have won that one as well.... perhaps.

And the Tour of Cali stage, Sagan didn't gallop great at all.
