Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

DJI press event tomorrow so expect it then.

    https://twitter.com/DJIGlobal/status/1323625982071373825?s=20

Would have been nice to see a Mavic 3, no update in over 2 years now.
First Mavic mini was released only 11 months ago.

Did you get the first mini? Any thoughts?

    Thanks

I had a spark before but got rid of it Very soon after buying. I made the mistake of not getting the flymore combo and found the range on the phone useless. I only bought it for mucking around and playing with the kids etc. I most likely would have kept it had I got the controller.

Recently been considering getting another drone to bring a bit of entertainment to lockdown and boring weeks with little work on my plate.

One cool feature On the spark was the follow me mode. The mini Mavic doesn’t have it, whispers the mini 2 might, but probably not. If it had it, I’d seriously consider it. Other than that I’m not sure that I’d see it worth buying ahead of the mini 1. The signal will be better, but for an amateur buying a toy, probably not worth the price difference..... any thoughts?

The only other feature I’d like to see on it which I don’t believe the mini 1 had when stacked up against the spark was the anti crash sensors.

Never had one myself. Just using it as an example of a pretty new drone already getting an update.

    I own a Phantom 4 Pro Obsidian, Mavic Pro Platinum and a Yuneec Q500 4k (which I might be selling ;) )

    Expensive enough!!

    No tracking on it :(
    No anti crash.

I think For the price difference I’d stick with the mini 1. Might have a look around for a Black Friday deal on it, do people think we’ll see them drop the price on the 1 to shift them out?

Others thing, I read somewhere that you use a different app to control the mavic mini and not the standard dji go 4 app, and it’s not as good. Anyone got any feedback regarding that and if the mini 2 has gone with the go 4 app?

I never had the first mini. A FIMI X8 SE 2020 arrived like this from Banggood this morning so I am definitely going with the mini 2 once I get a full refund on the FIMI!!

Thinking of getting one for the new year, the price difference vs the Air 2 is whats enticing me but im slightly wary due to lack of obstacle avoidance etc.

I read as much as I could on the mini 2 and I couldn’t see anything that made me want to buy it over the original mini and so I went with it instead.

From reviews it looks like flying time per battery might be slightly less than the mini as the battery is slightly smaller (not sure if that’s physically or capacity or possibly both) to make room for the additional sensors.

I haven’t got to fly my mini yet as it’s an Xmas present from my wife to me that I picked out for myself. It’s my first proper drone, had a parrot drone which I crashed on the 5 or 6 flight and killed it so looking forward to this one.

I got the Mini 2 as a Christmas present too and got a chance to fly it yesterday, was very impressed.

One on the main difference to it's predecessor is the OcuSync 2.0. The mavic mini only has wifi. So the transmission range is all round better and much stronger.

I flew mine for the first time on Sunday and was very impressed by it. I had already bought range extenders from AliExpress and was using them. I got 1800m range before I got a weak signal warning. I know I could have pushed it to 2km easily but I decided to bring it home as I didn't want to lose it on its first outing. I didn't try it with out the range extenders to see how far I can get but will do once we get another calm day.

Like I said its my 1st proper drone and I'm delighted with it so far.

Just curious, when it was 2KM away from you could you still see it?

No, you can't. Once it's about 200m away, it's very hard to spot or even hear it.

Strongly thinking of getting my first drone and looking at the Mini 2. No idea where to buy drones in Ireland except for Drone works in Galway and they are out of stock. Any good online shops I could try or just buy direct?

Some people on here have made the point in trying to buy local and I can understand that - but if you're having no luck, buying direct from DJI is fine.

Also, I'd recommend the Combo pack as 1 battery is never enough!

I got mine from the Apple store, it was the best price for the fly more combo when I purchased.

No I lost sight of it after approx 400m. I had been watching it but then looked down at my phone screen and couldn’t see it when I looked back up 5 seconds later.

seems to be the cheapest at the moment too. Mad how they can sell it cheaper than DJI.

Has happened me a few times, exactly the same thing, put the s**ts right up me! Then I remember to breathe and steady myself ;-) and get that bird home!

I pulled the trigger and went for the Mini 2 from Apple, Fly More package. We have a group scheme at work so got a discount on the price.
Delivery is Wednesday so hopefully the weather clears up for then. Very excited to get it :D

Just need to get a SD card now.

    Apple is €588.82
    DJI is €600
but you can get a 5% discount code from DJI by signing up to their mail
so that brings it down to €570

looked up the voucher on email and yes you seem to be correct as i imagine it will fall under other newly launched, so my apologies on that. however might be worth to some interested in buying a slightly older product, the mini 1 will qualify

    Coupon Usage:
    The coupon can be used to purchase DJI product from the DJI Online Store (Except for DJI OM 4, Phantom 4 Pro V2.0, Osmo Mobile 3, Tello EDU and their accessories, other newly launched or low stock products). To view the supported product list, log in to your DJI account, click My Account, My Coupons, followed by Use Now;
    The coupon code can only be used for one product. If multiple products are added in a single order, the coupon will only be applicable for the most expensive item;
    The coupon is valid for 30 days from the time you receive it;

I am pretty sure the 5% off works on the Mavic Air 2, great drone as well!

I got a DJI Mini 2 for Christmas and it's a great little drone. I'm repeatedly impressed by the quality of the photos and videos.
As it's under 250g, do I need to register with IAA?

You do unfortunately, even though it's below the 250g, any air device that has a camera needs an iaa license thing, due to the GDPR rules. Only takes 10 mins to get and 5 euro for 2 years... Heard a romour that it's going up to 30 euro on January 31st.
Don't need to register the drone itself though as that's only needed for the heavy ones.

    iaa.ie/general-aviation/drones/drone-faqs---operator-registration

"1. Do I need to register my drone with the IAA?
Currently, all drones over 1kg and drones operated above 15m (50ft), must be registered with the IAA. However, on December 31st 2020 the EU drone Regulation comes into effect, which will require all drone operators using any drone over 250grams, or those with a camera or sensor to be registered. By registering with the IAA at this time you will automatically meet the new EU requirements. You can register with the IAA on the MySRS portal"

I don't have link on the 30 euro romour, think it was somewhere on reddit I read that.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10 Hypor

Ahh here's the link to the reddit post about it going up to 30 euro, it's very possible that might be additional to obtain the second A2 class license there bringing in for more freedom.

interesting that. so really the 250gm weight limit means nothing now?

ive had a quick read, so am i right in saying that you don't actually register the drone, you just need to register yourself as an operator. does that then cover any drone flying or is there different types of registrations?

  • Registered Users Posts: 10 Hypor

Think 250g is good still in most other countries outside the EU, but ya that new regulation is bollox and makes the whole weight restriction pointless now.
Ya that's all you need to do, is to register yourself as an operator, once you do that it will give you option to be a class A1/A3 or else pick a Class A2 operator, depending which one suits you.
A1/A3 is what most people use and that should cover almost all drones.

At the moment you can only pick either option, not both. But looks like they will be letting you get both soon, they also will be bringing in more trainings and more types of operators in the Future... I think there was like 3 coming soon options when I signed up on their portal.

Got the Mini2 out for the first few flights this weekend. Very happy with it. I did have an issue with the horizon being off in all photos but i calibrated the gimbal and I think that should be it sorted now. The weather was unreal and I don't think I could have taken a bad photo.

Very easy to fly, range is very good. Got it 2km away from me with no connection issues. Have no doubt it would be fine further away. Had it well out over the sea with no issues also.

Have attached a photo, you can see the horizon is a bit out. Hopefully the calibration has sorted that for next flight.

I think the app has added some adjustments to it. I'm not very good at photo editing so I just let the app do a quick edit.

Should mention droneworksireland too where I got my new drone, was actually one of the cheapest places to get one and ordered staurday as well, just got it today Tuesday. Looking at the tracking, appears DPD didn't get the order till roughly 4pm yesterday.

They were 607 when I was buying mine. Apple was 588. Good shop if you want to buy local but i went for apple as got a memory card too from memoryC.com for the same as the Drone works price. Do they charge for delivery?

Ya had to pay 8 euro, they sell sd cards there too, decent write read speed.. one I got was 128gb for 32 euro. There was a deal on when I got my mini2 combo deal for 550ish, doesn't come with the battery hub though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,967 ✭✭✭RoadRunner

Got a mini 2 the other week and now loving this new hobby. It gives an extra reason to get out of the house and do something during the cold weather. I picked it up at camera center at the top of Grafton st. Paid €650 for the full combo kit and also a 64bg card.

This is the only drone I've flown so it's hard for me to compare it to anything else. I wanted to buy an air 2, but I wasn't sure how much I'd like droning and figured that whatever I get could just be sitting on a shelf gathering dust. Thankfully that's not the case. Probably at some stage I'll upgrade, but this thing is so small and inconspicuous that I'd probably still keep this!

Early scene is a frozen puddles. I wasn't physically at that spot myself though and it looked very weak ice though the camera, so didn't try land on it, no issues with it though.

Getting close to actual water wasn't problematic at all. I think I was still a few feet above it. Over the open sea a little more to account for small waves. There's a sensor that is supposed to react to low altitude objects. If you wave your hand under the drone it will rise in response. Over water it not something I would want to rely on solely though. In general when you tell the drone to fly at a certain height when conditions are good it doesn't deviate from that height. I've done a good bit of indoor hovering of it to get the feel for it and I felt fairly confident with it flying low. It also build in a little buffer. If you try go below about 2 feet, it will stop and call it a landing.

I have learned of problems with people flying above cloud/fog and having the opposite when they try to descend. Ie, the drone goes up without problem but when descending sees the cloud as a solid and tries to "land". If you are above clouds you're likely up very high, and if you are stuck trying to descend in landing mode then you could be up there for a very long time fighting against the wind chewing up battery in the process. Whereas you might normally think a descent from high up will use very little battery to get back down, the exact opposite can happen and you could end up with you device running out of battery before it gets back.
