Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Heard this on the radio yesterday.

Terrible that someone was so isolated no one missed her. RIP.

Her distressed family were in court, um you didn't here from the woman in two years, ya can't have been that bothered.

First they came for the socialists...

They said she was a very private person who never tried hard to stay in contact with her family.

The mother had a colleague more than 50 years ago and recounted a few times about how when her aunt had died, she was weeping like a banshee, saying how much she loved her and her heart was broken.

Turns out the poor old wan had not seen a visitor in 11 years, and had died alone.

    But there was a will.....

    No one is that private.

Agreed, I love my own company but Jesus people would not leave me for 2 years without contact!

I'm normally a 'throw the book at him' type of person, but.. in this case I suspect the young guy is in more need of psychiatric help then jail time.

Well of course theyre not gonna say they just werent arsed to call her
No matter how private she was you should call an elderly relative every so often to see theyre just doing alright

Not all families are close-knit, I've gone years without contact with 'close' family.

She was a woman who lived alone so surely they should have discussed it between them that they hadn't made contact with her in 2 years. They'll be happy enough to take her money!

I disagree. Plenty of people are. Especially if they're elderly. Friends might be gone, or they've lost touch, and their siblings could be gone and if they only see nieces and nephews at major events, then they may not think it's appropriate to stay in touch. My parents have a couple of 90-something aunts that the family would never hear from if they didn't go out of their way to get in touch. If my parents were to die before these aunts, I barely even know their names, never mind know how to get in touch to make sure they're OK.

Social isolation of the elderly is a major problem, and it goes hidden because by their nature you don't even know they're there.

They may have their little routines; talk to a shopkeeper every day, see the bus driver on other days, collect pension, etc. But these people don't know what goes on outside the window. One day the person disappears and the bus driver assumes that she's gone to live with a daughter or otherwise someone is looking after it. They don't know she has nobody.

It's sad in this case that no postman saw fit to raise the alarm, but y'know, how many properties do postmen see on a daily basis with post piling up? People gone on holidays, vacant properties, etc. If they were to investigate every single one, they'd never get anything done.

It's something that does need to be worked on - it's only going to get worse over time - but it's very difficult to address on a national basis. It requires local intervention and programmes.
