Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Vauxhall brand and the regular that stick to brands I guess and pricing also may be good.
At least since PSA took over I believe they'll be better then when GM was in control.

PSA didn't do anything with the Mokka though, they inherited it from GM.

I get that but I'd like to think they're cars will be better.
Mad seeing all the difference between countries.

I'd say Skoda would have had it here few years ago.

    Hyundai really doing well.

Misleading of them to say 'every country'. There are loads of countries missing including most of the African continent.

I see in England the graphic has the golf as the best seller. However in 18 ,19 and 20 so far it is the fiesta.

Toyota seem extremely popular worldwide, especially the Hilux all over the developing world. Is Toyota the world's biggest motor company?

    I think ford is.

the issue with a lot of those countries is they'll take the old ones and keep them running, it might be the most popular car but not 'new' car .

ford probably sell more new F150's every year in the US and Canada than Toyota sell hiluxes worldwide, but 20 years later half those f150's will be in a scrap yard, 90% of the hilux's will still be roaming the desert or rainforest.

Has been the world's biggest for a long time though VW has narrowed the gap a lot in the past decade

Ford has never even been number one in America, always been GM

Sure it's still a huge company but a lot smaller than Toyota or VW

Googled it and Wikipedia does agree with you. Just holding off the VAG group, close thing nowadays

VW was a distant second twenty years ago, Toyota declined due to rise of the Koreans and VW has grown considerably

Toyota Yaris in Iceland surprised me.

    Octavia in Switzerland, too.

    .

They have the population of about 3 Tallaght's . Probably means about 100 people bought a new yaris last year. :)

Probably all fleet cars for rental. Lots of Icelanders would drive 4x4s.

Hong Kong - Hiace is most popular. Is car ownership low given that it's a densely populated city and most vehicles are commercial?

    I don't think that's what surprised me ;)

When it comes to size we better don't try to join any motor related competitions ;)

    Or even population related ones.

Still not sure what all these Octavias are doing in Switzerland. Are they just more clever with money???

Many Swiss imports in Europe, always well specced cars with no expense spared.

That map is interesting to look at, but zero info on what dates it covers, what year/month. Maybe it is a weekly map for week 26 in 2016?

    Who knows...

Best selling car in Ireland in 2019 was the Toyota Corolla according to the SIMI stats: https://stats.beepbeep.ie

    Tucson was 2018.

Top selling car in Wales & Scotland 201X: Vauxhall Mokka

2020 Opel Mokka sales in Ireland: 1

Hiaces are probably taxis. There’s an awful lot of local knock-off Hiace models too.

Tesla are the biggest car company in the world.

Only by market cap , by any other measure such a claim is ludicrous

True, market cap is the best method for comparing company valuations.

The valuation of Tesla has risen of fallen in a day the same value of the entire Ford Motor company. Crazy!

Yeah, so many of them around.

Also so affordable and free to drive.

They literally wiped out all other car manufacturers.

But we're not comparing company valuations?

The higher the valuation of a company the bigger the company is in theory. Someone asked who the biggest car company in the world is. Tesla could buy Ford with their leftover pocket money for example. Sorry the drag this thread off topic though :o

No, they couldn't. Also the brand itself is worth a lot more than paper can take.

That's why cars and accountants don't mix well.

Going back to topic I guess Toyota could be the winner.

Vag group definitely ruling the Europe. Toyota the rest of the world.

Tesla market cap is made up of largely intangible assets, trademarks, patents, R&D department. Don't even make a dent in sales figures yet.

It helped that GM had so many brands, and GM didn't just focus on cars. For example, all CIE/Irish Rail locomotives from 1960 were manufactured by GM (They sold the EMD rail division in 2005, though). GM owned Chevy, Cadillac, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick, Saturn, even Hummer for a while (and the foreign subsidiaries, such as Holden, Vauxhall, Opel, Saab)

Ford only ever had three in the US: Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, plus Troller, Jaguar, Landrover and Volvo for a while abroad.

They made up for it by sheer outselling everyone else in their market for any particular category. The F150 has been the best-selling vehicle in the US for decades and world-wide only the Toyota Corolla has beaten it. Both leave the third and fourth place Golf and Beetle in the dust. The Mustang has similarly been a hot seller, with one sold every three minutes for the last five decades in North America only (unlike Corolla, which is worldwide).

Had to look up the Ford F150 to see what it looks like, presumably they never sold in Europe?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,457 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manic Moran

Considered a bit big, the Ford Ranger would have been a bit more available in some European countries, but the F150 is to Americans what the Transit is to Europeans: The carry-anything, do anything vehicle. (That said, the E150, the US Transit equivalent, was the second-most sold vehicle in the US until it ceased production a couple of years ago). It's not impossible to find an F150 in Europe, but they are normally imported by the owner. A full-sized pickup is not a small vehicle by European standards, and folks don't seem to trust the open bed as much in congested cities.

Fairly sure Clarkson had a F150 on test around English country lanes and villages in an episode of Top Gear back around 2005.

He took it apart in the review for the ancient suspension and pointed out why pick ups were never really taken up in Europe - your tools could be easily nicked at a junction.

He ran a F150 Raptor in a Grand Tour episode, he rather liked it. Hammond also did a Ranger Raptor last year on Drivetribe. If you think the Raptor looks big, CarWow did a drag race with both, and you can compare that to the F150 which is huge.

Imagine parking f150 in european sized parking spot.

I don't think I would like to do it on a daily basis.
