Absolute dopes :( I would be very sympathetic with the protestors in the USA but protesting this issue in Waterford during a pandemic is the height of stupidity. Everyone these days seem to think that Americas issues are our issues, SAD! :P

Social Media influence and all that ****e with boredom/frustration and a little jumping on the bandwagon

Anyway on pubs opening quite a few places here could operate on the 29th June

I wonder how many of these people would be protesting if the shops and pubs were open and the airports were operating..

Pure boredom, a lot of it.

These are the type who vote for Green Party, PBP. SF also been unofficially pushing for this over the last week. There TDs don't respond to questions on it.

    Many will protest at anything.

I think Irish people played a very important role when they began to protest against apartheid in South Africa in the 80s. International outrage does impact change.

However why aren't they protesting against the treatment suffered by the Palestinians, Rohingya, Yemen, Hong Kong...the plight of those folks mustn't be important enough.

Finally I'm appalled that this is allowed happen when people are asked to stay at home wherever possible. Do elderly and vulnerable lives matter?

If the person is important enough to be bragged about on social media but a lot of people are protesting something they probably half understand

How many people knew what 'pandemic' meant before all this ?

I listened to a chap that came down from New Ross being interviewed and saying that he took his life in his hand's to come and protest, well I have new's for him not only did he take his own life in his hand's but he also had the cheek to to take my life and everyone else's lives in his hand's.He should have been arrested on the spot.

I dont think it would matter if everywhere was opened or closed, its all about Instagram likes and gaining more followers.

Theres something seriously wrong when the guards took names and dispersed a few people who were protesting outside Debenhams a few weeks ago,and were turning people away from Tramore on June bank holiday weekend, but yet they stand by and watch a couple hundred people march up the quay and congregate on the Mall.

    https://twitter.com/damienwlr/status/1269272851934334976

That is a fairly sizeable group of people . Absolutely no sign of social distancing either. Yes its a genuine cause but there is definitely a time and place for protesting. During an ongoing pandemic is not the time. The gathering should not have been allowed or @ least dispersed. The Instagram effect in full flow; a lot of younger people get their news feed from social media platforms these days. So when an tragic event like last weeks happens even though it may be on the other side of the planet someone here in Waterford is as committed and invested in the story as a person in the US. Sign of the (social media) times.

Personally, I would have loved to have gone out to Tramore over the Bank Holiday weekend for a swim during the exceptionally good weather but I decided to adhere to the Govt/HSE advice and stay put @ home because I knew the Gardai would be out and about. However one person on a large beach would have presented a miniscule risk as opposed to what looks like a couple of hundred people marching side by side through the town less than a week later. Beggars belief  And unfortunately that is why I do not believe the Covid crisis is done & dusted. The increased movement and closer contact of larger sections of society over the coming weeks will result is some kind of spike in infections. The virus has not gone away. It has only been suppressed.

I doubt any of the Saturday "protesters" gave a thought to the 1,679 deaths to date in our country. Surely "ALL" lives matter??

Map of cases in Waterford per area as of 12 June, not very interesting really due to lack of cases and it's anonymised nature!

Drove down by beach today in tramore,at least 25-30 kids crammed into the skate park and all the parents standing beside eachother with coffees.english reg campervans parked there as well.sure if that's the case send the kids back to school and open up Ireland's borders for everyone to come back.

I'm not sure but, you'd think that sort of business would have serious infection control issues. At the very least, I'd say casinos will have to take on additional staff to cover cleaning down machines, controlling flow in and out of the premises and to walk the floor to monitor people.

500 people outdoors permitted from July 20th

I wonder could we see a small sproai festival in August maybe a few local bands playing around the place

Be nice if the Harvest Festival can take place as normal in September

Aug Bank Holiday is 5 weeks away but given that there will probably be a lot more locals around this year (not going on hols) I'd say there is a slim chance. You could easily have thousands of people on the streets with little or no distancing taking place. Add in food and drinking and you could almost write it off for this year sadly. You would have to factor in people from other parts of Ireland visiting the town thereby increasing the risk. Same with the Harvest.

Take a look around the world @ countries who began relaxing restrictions many of whom are experiencing spikes and surges. Although things are loosening up from Monday next the country will be almost fully open for the first time in months. The next month will tell a lot in Ireland. Have we really suppressed the virus or will there be a second wave?

Saw Leo on the TV last night saying he 'hopes' that there wont have to be another countrywide lockdown. A few weeks ago he was saying we 'definitely' wouldnt have one. It maybe a case of localised lockdowns by county etc. The general public are definitely not being as cautious or careful. The return of the pubs, hairdresser and sports in one go will test the strength of the notion that Ireland has "beaten" the virus.

unfortunately second waves are nearly always a certainty with pandemics, i think we might be seeing the first of these in some countries at the moment, hopefully it doesnt lead to a similar lockdown of late

i cant see us going into full close down again, maybe partition here and there, unfortunately it looks like second waves are an almost certainty with pandemics
